The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
It was last night
At our empty warehouse party
Ah, ah
And there in the black light
I could see the tattoos glowing on your body, well
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
And she said to meet her there, beside the power station
Oh, oh
And she said she'd let me stare
If the chemicals don't keep her waiting, well
Oh, oh
Yeah, whoa, oh
[Chorus]
Well I'm always coming down from the night before I left you
Yeah I'm always coming down but I'm doing my best to get caught
Yeah I'm always coming down from the night before well I bet you
To hear that gets you off
What gets you off
What gets you off
Red fingernail polish
Peeling like a sunburn
Ah, ah
That black designer dress looks better underneath our feet
Yours knees in the dirt
Well, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh oh oh
[Chorus]
Yeah
What gets you off
Oh, oh, oh
Yeah
[Chorus]
What gets you off
Oh, oh
What gets you off [Repeat: x3]

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
this song is so sexy. i wish he wanted to know what gets me off :)
to me it sounds like he says (at the question mark): "Your knees on the dirt"
but. it could be up for interpretation.
I think you are correct. It would make sense. If it thats what it says, this song is even better.
I think it's "Your knees in the dirt."
I really like this song. It's soo sexxy. His voice in this song is to die for!
I think this about his girlfriend wanting sex, but he's not able to give it to her because of all of the meds. Andrew had to take when he had cancer, but he wants to give her sex. Or something along those lines.
But I do know for sure this is a sexxy song.
Ha ha ha Iove this song seriously. Wat gets you off, ha ha ha. I love how catchy it is and it is like a song to have sex to.
i wrote a VERY short story in response to this song as soon as i heard it. it's just my interpretation. if anyone's interested it's at my livejournal at: quote-ofthexday.livejournal DOT com
I think that the second part of the chorus is:
Well I'm always coming down from the night before Well I beg you To hear that gets you off What gets you off
That's just how I heard it but I feel confident that's right. And I agree with alaskasmiles. It definitely does sound like a song to have sex to lol

Wow! an amazing song by an amazing person. I think the song though is pretty self explanitory. The song though kinda causes your mind to race.
this is my favorite track on the cd, hands down. It is very reminiscent of Something Corporate to me.
