I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I have an interesting take on this song. I believe this song is a sequel to Pray for Plagues from the girls point of view.
Depending on how you interpret Pray for Plagues it all basically comes down to Oli knowing a whore and how it messed up her life. If you look closely he uses some of the same words.

Before Oli says, "Eradicate this disease" he says "Christ I'm asking you for just one thing." That one thing would be to help the whore he knows. In Chelsea Smile when he says, "I look up to the sky, there may be nothing there to see. But if I don't believe in Him, why would He believe in me?" I believe it's from the girls point of view and her internal conflict with God and His existence and/or His love for her.
Furthermore, when Oli says, "I may look happy, but honestly dear, the only way I'll really smile is if you cut me ear to ear. I think the girl is saying how she regrets her actions so much it's almost impossible to make her smile/happy. I think the vultures he talks about are men who see she's filled with shame and see her as an easy target to be taken advantage of. "They lick their lips, as all the shame spills out of me." Maybe the girl is venting her problems to a man and all he sees is an easy target as he licks his lips.

This song, in my mind, has completely redeemed this band. I've never held them in great esteem, but hoooly.
Songmeaning wise, i think the whole song smacks of the saying 'every person has a heavy burden to bear'. You can know someone inside out, and yet not even touch on what pains them the most in every day life.
Well, The song name comes from the form of torture in-which the victim gets a credit card inbetween there lips to form a small cut then the victim is kicked or put in pain to make them scream so that they get a scar from ear to ear which looks like a smile.

you're right actually. i researched this particular torture technique last year out of pure interest and curiosity. although, instead of credit card they would use glass and scrap metal. and once they made the cuts, they would sometimes stab them to make them scream and expand the cuts more. <br /> and the deathcore band Chelsea Grin gets their name from this too. <br /> and as far as the secret parts, the torture started to punish people who would confess or tell things, like if the gang wanted to know something and the person wouldn't spill what they knew, this would be their way of punishment. that's where "i got a secret! it's on the tip of my tongue it's on the back of my lungs......" comes in (:

i agree. that part isn't sad as much as it is powerful. i got this album at the most perfect time, for it pulled me out of the hole i was falling into, especially that line. i dont think i have found a more powerful quote anywhere.
