Lyrics for Little Lion Man as interpreted by niamhOMFG

Little Lion Man Lyrics
weep for yourself, my man,
you'll never be what is in your heart
weep little lion man,
you're not as brave as you were at the start
rate yourself and rape yourself,
take all the courage you have left
wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

but it was not your fault but mine
and it was your heart on the line
i really fucked it up this time
didn't I, my dear?

tremble for yourself, my man,
you know that you have seen this all before
tremble little lion man,
you'll never settle any of your score
your grace is wasted in your face,
your boldness stands alone among the wreck
learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

but it was not your fault but mine
and it was your heart on the line
i really fucked it up this time
didn't I, my dear?

I can't actually get over how amazing this band is. My favourite song from the Ep's so far - bring on the next one please.
I think this song is about that one person you've let slip away, even after they've hung around you for ages, giving you so many chances but you've been too foolish to see it then. Ain't Hindsight a wonderful thing?

I think the verses are of a guy addressing himself, realising how foolishly he's behaved, by pushing the person that they loved away. He says "Wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head", which could suggest a case of paranoia which, ultimately, ended the relationship.
Anyway, it's a wonderful song and I won't be surprised if these guys hit it big soon. :)

i agree that this is about a guy who fucked up something/someone important to him.
rate yourself and rape yourself is like saying that he should see himself for what he is, and suffer because of it, because of how he treated her.
your grace is wasted in your face, he's beautiful, but its wasted, because the inside is ugly.
biting your own neck, pure vampire, draining the life, he used to do it to others, but now he needs to see the error of his ways or he'll only have himslef to feed on/depend on. he'll be alone

that was my train of thought, but i dnt know if its one guy advising another, one man speaking to all men, or a guy talking to himself

either way, this is beauty

It's definitely one of those songs that, after the first time you hear it, all you want to do is hear it again! I've been listening to it repeatedly for the last week. I'd say it's one of the catchiest choruses of the year.
I find the clip really captivating too even though it's such a simple set. Long live the banjo!

I think the lyrics, the chorus in particular, are sarcastic. I think they're sung in a knowing, mocking tone.

I base this in large part off the first verse when he says "take all the courage you have left/ wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head". Also, the prelude to that, about "rate yourself and rape yourself" is almost like saying she had no self esteem, or was bi-polar or something similar (well, at least a bit unbalanced). She builds herself up, revels in the praise of it all, then goes completely the other way.

From that I gleam that he was in a relationship that has broken down and in the fallout, the aftermath of it all and the blame game he's sarcastically saying "yeah, it was all my fault, you were the only one with anything to lose in all this, isn't that right?"

It's like she's manufactured reasons to end their relationship and is running away from the consequences of it.

I agree with seanpb that you can definitely take the chorus as sarcasm, especially in light of the rest of the song. If it isn't sarcastic then in many ways it's at odds with the tone of the verses. However I do still think you could interpret it in a straightforward way if you wished, as a kind of clarity among the bitterness, using the courage he has left and facing up to the fact that he has been the one at fault.

Anyway, very good song. My friend and I were discussing how there seems to be a lot of what he calls 'twee folk' around (Noah and the Whale) while this is the kind of folk music we actually find interesting and want to hear.

Hey guys,

just to clarify some lyrics

It is 'rate yourself and rake yourself' although it is true that it really does sound like 'rape yourself'.

'waste it' not 'wasted'

I absolutely love this song :-)

Heard this song on the radio in London and immediately liked it. It's so catchy and I can't stop listening to it! I definitely think it's about a guy who was in a relationship and started getting jealous "wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head" in his head he was imagining his girlfriend was cheating on him so he ended the relationship but then realized she didn't cheat on him, so he screwed up the relationship and he's just realizing how stupid he is for doing that and how he regrets it.
