Awesome song! I can't wait for Death Magnetic (September)!
Ok,Cyanide is a strong poison so I think it's about suicide. But this is just my opinion.

Awesome ong you can watch them perform this at OzzFest on Youtube. This is probably about using cyanide to commit sucide and the punsihment that your soul goes through when your dead.

BlackLegion1994 almost right, this song is about using Cyanide to make a suicide.(Cyanide - any salt of cyanil acid *not sure about theese words, can't really translate them from russian*) You have about one minute of life left if you breath it, you have a couple minutes more if you eat it. I think this song is about theese moments between life and death.

This tells about the moments when you haven't yet died, but already feel cyanide destroying you within.

Cyanide is a very popular kind of poison among spies. In the cold war it was used by the spies to commit suicide when they were captured to prevent telling important information

think is about suicide, but also about euthanasia

meaning he kill himself because he had no reason to live anymore, but also he question himself if he've done the right thing

There is another part of the song the lyrics that seems to be wrong:

what i hear is:

I may be wrong but this song sounds to me like an anti-abortion song, the unborn being the singer in this song.

probably meaning the initially reason he came to be in the first place, saying the parents are careless...

asking death(the doctor doing the operation) to let him live, then he says "death wont you call your name?" asking the one taking his life to take his own instead

This song is about Heinrich Himmler taking a cyanide pill after they captured him. As head of SS and Gestapo, after the war, he only had an empty army.

Does anybody notice that James lyrics on DM are probably his most abstract ever? James once said he doesn't sit down and write poetry like most of his favorite songwriters do, but hey, I think there's poetry in many of his lyrics, and DM makes no exception. They're kinda impressionistic, perhaps only those on The Unforgiven III are more kind of narrative and story-based. This song makes some disturbing references to abortion, but I think the main theme is suicide.

vlakarados, the cover that tomfrankly was refering to is the page within the booklet that's glued into the CD case for Death Magnetic. Open the booklet and look at the page that contains the lyrics for Cyanide.....it's an ultrsound picture. AWFNateDawg may have hit the nail on the head with his interpretation.....if the song "cover" is any indication.

for your information, cyanide is a species of bat who hunts by day and rests at night- a bat who is not nocturnal-a very rare kind of species. what metallica is trying to say that, we, fans should eat a healthy breakfast in the morning then so we can have a beautiful rest at night just like the CYANIDE BAT..
