So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Baby girl twist away
When you’re talking to me
I can't breathe
Set some time aside to say
Why don't you stay
Seven years later I still I feel like a child
You're the one
I know you are
You're the one
I know you are
This calm feeling ends
When you enter
Not many cigarettes left
And I'll wait... until you get back...untill you arrive
Don't want to, I want to
I wouldn't, I would
You're the one
I know you are
You're the one
I know you are
Meredith, I'll miss you when go anywhere
She’s so lovely
But she still loves me
When you’re talking to me
I can't breathe
Set some time aside to say
Why don't you stay
Seven years later I still I feel like a child
You're the one
I know you are
You're the one
I know you are
This calm feeling ends
When you enter
Not many cigarettes left
And I'll wait... until you get back...untill you arrive
Don't want to, I want to
I wouldn't, I would
You're the one
I know you are
You're the one
I know you are
Meredith, I'll miss you when go anywhere
She’s so lovely
But she still loves me

ok, yeah you can say this song is about merideth cuz technically it is now. but this is anthony green people.. this song is actually really old, he may have even wrote those lyrics before he was in saosin.. did he know merideth then? i honestly dont know. just saying. like when i first heard this song, it was "2 years later" instead of 7 or whatever. i believe this song makes a total refrence to marijuana. To me, it is obvious. if you cannot see this, just substitue pot in for babygirl. then you can see how the analogy works, like: "when you're talking to me, i cant breathe" -could work for him coughing after taking a hit. and the line "baby girl twist away" totally works with rolling a joint. even old people will talk about weed but disguise it as some old lady named Mary Jane. anthony even says Mary Jane in place of merideth in an acoustic clip. The demo of this song did not have the lyrics: "Meredith, I'll miss you when I go anywhere." he added that in on the newer version. after all he is clean these days. He does this same kinda thing with the circa song Glorious Nosebleed, where the lyrics hint torwards possibily cocaine or something, but he has told people it is about a girl trapped in a burning building. this girl has to make a decison between staying where she is and praying for help, or jumping out the window.. could that possibily be the concept behind the juturna album art? like that girl falling on the front, she even looks like she is falling after stepping off a window ledge or something. when you open the album booklet open, its a trippy forest, and there is a trail that leads to bright glowing door ("walk into the light") the door could represent the spot where the girl jumped from, or it could represent her seeing the light at the end of the tunnel while she is coming down from a drug or a bad trip. when i first read the lyrics, i was almost positive it was about getting somebody to do cocaine for they're first time and then coming off of it not long after. anthony is an insane poet and will write the lyrics to a song for the sole purpose of being able to have multiple meanings to that song.
My gawd, there's just 96 words in the entire song and some are duplicates ;) The entire song can be summed up in one stanza: "You're the one. I know you are." What friggin' song did you hear ;)
