though i have a feeling hes saying "you'll be missed, miss california".
though its hard to tell.
he obviously loves this girl enough to want to take her and hide her away from the world.

i don't think this song is literally about kidnapping...i think it means that he missed this girl and wants to bring her back to where he's happy, and he knows she'll be happy too. california has always been andrew's home, so i think that's what he's speaking of. he wants to take this girl that he loves home...and it definitely is "you'll be missed, miss california."

this is so good. i can't remember the last time i've been this excited for a cd. this song has a bit of the old soco feel to it, but yet still has the full and fresh feel of jack's. love this man to death.

The obvious is about a kidnapping but punkkid is right, it's about how serious dating and marriage change people and the responsibilities tied to the relationship. He isn't really bleaching her hair, but remarking that her personality changes after their relationship. She won't really be missing, her old self will be. They'll blame him because, for better or for worse, knowing/dating him changed her. I'm guessing it's for the worse because he uses the word "blame" and he equates her to "Jesus' girl." Notice how he calls her MISS California. She will be missed because, after marriage, she will become Mrs. California.

Or, y'know, he could've raped her.. :P

No, I think this song is just straight-up about kidnapping someone. I mean, I don't see the marriage parallels so much, in part because of the "I hear she has a boyfriend" line. I think you're kind of grasping to justify the whole "when they can't find you" thing. I don't think it's trying to be some allegory for someone becoming someone different. I mean, how do you read the "they can't prove anything" line?

Plus, I think there's an interesting portrait of the person doing this. He's been infatuated with someone, but he's kept restrained. Then, as he loses his faith ("I called Jesus but he didn't check his phone today"), he starts descending into madness and ends up kidnapping this girl.

But yeah, not every song has to have some deeper, secret meaning making it actually a happy song. I think that it's a really fucking creepy song juxtaposed with an upbeat melody.

I think you people are taking the song way too literally.

Simple explination-Summer romance. He wasn't sure if he wanted it to be more then that or not, and he kinda tools the girl around a bit....goes out, gets with other girls, etc....But then he realizes it's her he wants.

The whole "youll be missed" part is just how their love will be...She'll no longer be available, no other guys out there can have her, cause she's all his now...and they're completely wrapped up in each other.
He's just saying she won't be around and about on the beach/in town anymore, because she'll be at home with him.

I'm not really sure what this song's about... I think that it is about a summer fling. He's saying he thought he could leave her while it got cold, but instead she got a boyfriend. So instead of telling her bye, he's telling her she'll be missed and that she'll really only be his.... I don't know?

Right now, this is my absolute favorite song off The Glass Passenger. And it isnt even on the CD, its just a bonus song. But either way, it's a great song.
I love the way Andrew uses these vivid images on his songs, especially on this one.
The part of "Im gonna paint a diamond on your hand, and you will be my bride" just gives me the chills of how beautiful the picture/poetic images are used.
I love and do art and I would love for any guy to paint a diamond on my hand (it would mean even more than a real diamond!)

But about the meaning of the song, just like the song says she'll be a mistery, this song is a mistery to me. It can be about a summer fling, or marriage or an obsession with a girl (just like recyledxphrases said about "Every Breath You Take": that song is about a stalker/obsession with a woman. And I totally agree with the comparison of this song and "Miss California", recyledxphrases.)

i kinda think that he wants this girl and after a while, she falls in love with him and they run off together and dont tell anybody. thats how shes a mystery but not to him. and when he says they will blame him its because hes the one that swept her away (not literally)

hmm im thinking he had a summer fling with this girl, he left her at after the summer, but when he heard she had a boyfriend he got jealous so he's planning out how he could take her if he wanted and that she would me missed but that she would be only his then "you'll be kissed by only me". but then it goes back to the fact that hes not going to kidnap her with "ill be around" meaning he'll be there waiting if she comes back

Part of the *brilliance* of Andrew McMahon's songwriting is that, yeah, the lyrics are about marriage, but that they also can be interpreted as being about something totally different, i.e., kidnapping. IXneedXaXusername, I liked your analysis--I hadn't thought of it that way, but I totally buy what you said! And recycledxphrases, the comparison to "Every Breath You Take"...love it.

The lyrics are just so clever, and deeper than having only one possible meaning. The fact that they could apply to both marriage and to kidnapping/stalking can make us think about the similarities between those things...definitely creepy and not something most of us probably like to think about (and I'm not saying I agree)...but the point is that they make you think.

Not to mention the song is just generally awesome...my fave off the album too :)

This song is actually about how Andrew used to live in California, but then he moved to Oaklahoma, and he misses California. "You'll be missed Miss CALIFORNIA" Get it?
