Lyrics for Get-Well-Cards as interpreted by shrodes

Get-Well-Cards Lyrics
All the peacock people left their plumes in a pile
They look good to a fault
And the Gulf water's warm like a bathtub
Full of lavender and epsom salt

See a bleach blond boy put his longboard down
Help his girl get her sunscreen on
I thought about you in your little house
Think you're lonely but I could be wrong and . . .

I want to be your bootlegger
Want to mix you up something strange
Braid your hair like a sister
Name you like a hurricane

Right there, that's the postman sleeping in the sand
He's got a letter to deliver, but I can't stay mad
Right there, that's the postman sleeping in the sand
He's got a get-well-card to deliver
He's going to do it by hand, he's going to do it by hand

Now they drive the cars up and down the beach
It's ridiculous and everybody knows
Hear the Mustangs rev at the four way stop
You get ghosted when the light says go

But in a town like this, in the chequered flag dawn
It's so empty you could make somebody dream
So maybe it's you, in your four-post bed
Sound asleep but still grinding your teeth and . . .

I want to be your happiness
I want to be your common sense pain
Wrap your head in a picket fence
Rebuild after the hurricane

Right there, that's the postman sleeping in the sand
He's got my letters to deliver, but I'm still not mad
Right there, that's the postman sleeping in the sand
He's got a get-well-card to deliver
He's going to do it by hand
He's going to do it, he's going to do it
He's going to do it, he's going to do it
He's going to do it, he's going to do it by hand

Oh, right there, that's the postman sleeping in the sand
He's got a letter to deliver, but I can't stay mad
Right there, that's the postman asleep in the sand
He's got a head stack now to deliver
He's wants to do it by hand
He's going to do it, he's going to do it
He's going to do it, he's going to do it
He's going to do it, he's going to do it
He's going to do it, he's going to do it by hand

It's "name you like a hurricane," not maim.

I always thought it was, "braid your hair like a sister, or maybe like a hurricane." I liked that. It made sense to me.

to blackmajik2021:
dont be an ass when you're wrong.
he definitely says "name you like a hurricane."
why, you ask? because all tropical depressions are named when they become hurricanes: hurricane andrew, hurricane rita, etc...

Please explain to me exactly how one would maim a hurricane? Please. That makes no sense. Also, in the booklet that came with the album it says clearly "Name you like a hurricane." That actually seems to make sense also...imagine that. And a good day to you, sir.

Furthermore, the phrase "maim you like a hurricane" makes sense, maybe it doesn't say that in the song...but gwerty202 that line would not mean maiming a hurricane...."maim you LIKE a hurricane" that is called a simile, when 2 things are being compared, maiming a person is being compared to a hurricane maiming someone

Maim is a verb that means to injure or cripple

From what i know, hurricanes can easily hurt someone, i don't know if you are aware of what a hurricane is capable of doing to someone, but it can definitely maim a human, just like another human can maim another human.....did i break it down enough for you?

So he's talking about how he wants to be her friend and then comes back and says in the next line "I want to maim you." Oh yea, that makes a ton of sense. It really doesn't matter since the actual word is "name," however. And I'm being an elitist prick because blackmajik2021's example of what he means by "maim you like a hurricane" is laughable and makes zero sense. Also, I'm doing it because it gets a rise out of people like you who are wrong. :-)

eh, well at least you can admit that you are an elitist prick....that alone gives me enough satisfaction to disregard the rest of your arrogant post about how you think everyone else is stupid when they don't agree with your interpretation of the song

Minor correction, in the chorus, he says "right there, that's the postman asleep in the sand" every time, not just the last time

gwerty202,

when you said "So he's talking about how he wants to be her friend and then comes back and says in the next line 'I want to maim you.'"

i thought the same thing, but i was just going by what the lyrics that were posted said because the lyric booklet wasn't out yet. i realized it didn't make sense, but i don't understand half the shit conor oberst writes (i'm sorry i'm not some smart poetry analyst or whatever), so i assumed it was right.

I can't believe no one has commented on how much Conor sounds like Bob Dylan in this song. Am I the only one who thinks so?

All the same, this song is particularly fantastic. The whole album is a triumph.

Two things:

1 - the lyrics:
"A peacock, people left the plumes in a pile
They look good to fold "
is really:
"All the peacock people left their plumes in a pile They look good to a fault"
and also:
"Found asleep with still blood in your teeth and.."
is really: "Sound asleep but still grinding your teeth", at least according to the cd liner notes, (which, by the way, i need a magnifying glass to decipher - why so tiny???)

2. - I need some help with the whole postman asleep in the sand image. I'm bad with poetry but I love to find out what it means, and I just don't get this
I saw an interview where Conor says this song is about forgiveness. So... what - he's "not mad" at the postman?
I'm sure it all means something interesting, so come on you smart people:
Somebody - break it down for me like I'm three?
I'd appreciate it...

I for sure thought he sounded like Bob Dylan in this song. I guess all those years of people saying that he is the next Bob Dylan finally got to him. Too bad too, I really don't like Bob Dylan.

to me, this song describes a beach vacation very well. who doesn't go to the beach and look around at all the couples and think of someone they're missing? and who doesn't go to these sleepy little beach towns and criticize how so many of them seem to lack any substance?

this song is very relaxed, which is pretty much a rarity in the greater conor oberst collection. i think the significance of the postman asleep in the sand is to illustrate how everyone has their duties and their jobs outside of this gulf vacation, but you're all relaxing and enjoying the same sands and sun, so "delivering the letters," or whatever your obligations may be, can wait.

After reading "maim you like a hurricane" a million times, I had to post this. Simply buy the LP or the CD and read the lyrics for yourself. According to Conor's LP it's "NAME you like a hurricane." Also to those looking for a literary reference in "Common sense Payne?" according to the LP lyrics it's "common sense pain."

I have heard and read lots of how this song is about Maria Taylor, who has had that on and off relationship with Conor for the last umpteen years. He said in Rolling Stone he and this girl had broken up after trying for years at the on again off again stuff....

This is one of my favorite songs from this album. Yeah this song reminds me of Dylan, but if you think about it, this whole album is a big homage to all the great folk singers of the past. I can't wait to see them at ACL, and the ACL Aftershow. They were awesome in Saratoga.
