Lyrics for True Freedom as interpreted by apocalyptic.friend

True Freedom Lyrics
If I was a poet
Or maybe a king
Then I could explain to you how my heart sings
Whenever I look in your eyes
Like a hummingbird trapped in my chest, I would say is
Just how it felt on that glorious day
When I first , when I first saw you
Together we’ll know true freedom
From all earthly constraints
Dissolving brilliance
Bright colors
In the picture God paints
Here take these pills
I don’t know what they do
And I’ve already swallowed more than a few
I promise your mother she won’t even notice they’re gone
And what was that song that Youth Minister Ted
Sang after his sermon
It’s been stuck in my head
The chorus went, it went something like this
Together we’ll know true freedom
From all earthly constraints
Dissolving brilliance, bright colors
In the picture God paints
The popular kids that ignored us at school
Will whisper our names as the tears fill the pool
We’ll look down upon and laugh
As rosy cheeked angels join us in cheers
Where no one is lonely and there’s nothing to fear
I wish I could go there right now
I wish I could go touch you right now
Together we’ll know true freedom
From all earthly constraints
Dissolving brilliance
Bright colors
In the picture God paints
If I was a poet
Or maybe a king
Then I could explain to you how my heart sings
Whenever I look in your eyes

Eef’s lyrics are a bit ambiguous here...the song definitely begins with him being madly in love with someone. The verse that follows immediately takes a sharp turn..."take these pills," and then the following verse "Where no one is lonely and there’s nothing to fear
I wish I could go there right now
I wish I could go touch you right now,” seems to imply that his love is lost...if you're thinking about the song literally it seems she may have died from the pills (either accidentally or suicide). If you take the song figuratively this could be a person that isn’t dead at all but was someone he loved so deeply and thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with, only to be devastated when things didn't work out. I like to view the song in the figurative way. When you find someone that seems like they're your true love and it ends up not working out you feel emotionally devastated; I think this song portrays a strong sense of this devastation

…does anyone have any other ideas...this is just what I could squeeze out of it

hmmm
It's like three parts there. First he meets her, it's a true love they want eachother, thus the "hummingbird part". Then the pills. It's like no one accepted their love, it couldn't go through, so they commited suicide (or plan to do). And then they "look down upon and laugh" like it's some kind of victory for them because they are finaly together despite all the other people. The "true freedom from all earthly constraints".

That's my poor and literal interpretation xD

great song

This is one of Eef's most straightforward songs. What's hard to understand here? He's climbing inside a character, like he does in many of his songs. In this case, the narrator is a school-aged boy, emotionally damaged by being bullied and/or ignored by "the popular kids," and the song takes place in the middle of his suicide attempt. He's just tried (successfully or unsuccessfully, we don't know, but I lean toward thinking she wised up and got out okay) to persuade his girlfriend, whom he loves truly but obsessively, to commit suicide alongside him. He's deluded by his religious upbringing into thinking the afterlife will be much better than his actual life.
