Lyrics for Free Fallin' (Tom Petty cover) as interpreted by keekaroni

Free Fallin' (Tom Petty cover) Lyrics
She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too
Shes a good girl, crazy bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's a long day living in reseda
There's a freeway runnin through the yard
I'm a bad boy cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin her heart

And I'm free, free fallin,fallin
Yeah I'm free, free fallin,fallin

All the vampires walkin through the valley
They move west down ventura boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts

And I'm free, free fallin,fallin
Now I'm free, free fallin,fallin
Free fallin, now I'm free fallin, now I'm
Free fallin, now I'm free fallin, now I'm

I wanna glide down over mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
Wanna free fall out into nothin
Gonna leave this world for a while

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

I saw John play this song in concert a few days ago and i was awestruck. I don't know if I was just surprised to hear him play a song that I loved so much, or if it was just the simple guitar combined with his voice, but it almost brought me to tears. It is just beautiful.

this is a brilliant cover...thanks, john, for erasing the image in my mind of tom cruise screaming this at the top of his longs.

I'm so glad John Mayer did this cover. Tom Petty's version has such a bad image because most of his other songs reference drugs. Well, personally, I like to believe this song has nothing at all to do with drugs. I think of it as a boy leaving a girl, and he doesn't feel guilty for leaving her. "I'm a bad boy cause I don't even miss her. I'm a bad boy for breaking her heart"
That's just the way I like to think of it. Forget all the drug references, it could mean a million other things. =)

This song is proof that John's voice has improved a LOT since the 'Inside Wants Out' days

i liked it better when i didnt know it was a cover.
this song makes me wanna scream i love it so much.
i think that it's about how he left a girl from a small town, and he says he doesnt miss her, but he feels bad cause she does.

"And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts"
I think this means that all the bad boys come back, but all the good girls are too hurt to come out and love anymore.

the last verse i think sums it up that the bad boys still love the good girls, but cant admit it because of the way they hurt them.
or i just hope that it's that way since im pretty much in the same shape.

love this though!

I've loved Tom Petty's version for years but I gotta admit John really knows what he's doing. He took a long shot covering this song and wooow did he do it. I love that even if it's the same song, it sounds like a completely different one. He adds stuff of his own to the song, that's what covers are supposed to be like. Tom Petty sounds excited about falling for this person, while John sounds much calmer and excited but still sort of scared and anxious about it.
It's so odd that an artist manages to cover a song and make it sound better than the original. Different, at least. I loved it.

And yeah, Indoor Use Only, I hadn't noticed that big an improvement in his voice, but *literally* have watched the Where the Light is DVD every day since I got it and the other day I watched the Any Given Thurdsay DVD and yes, his voice has improved sooooooooo much, as have his performances. It's basically the same thing, same rugs and just a couple of mics, guitars, bass and drums, but he's grown so much artist-wise.

a boy i know dedicated this song to me.
i know what i want it to mean, but i'm not sure if it's right at all.
his vocals just convey such a sense of surrender and falling that you can't help but fall in love. awesome song.

I like John Mayer's version better then the original. I don't know if he only does it acoustic but that is what I have on my iPod and I love it.

but the line:

"i'm a bad boy cause i don't even miss her"
what does that mean? i love it.. but if free falling really is falling in love.. why doesn't he miss her?

I don't think that this song is about falling in love with someone hence "I'm a bad boy cause I don't even miss her" I think he broke up with a girl because he just didn't want to be in a relationship anymore and wanted to cut loose on the ties.

'She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too
Shes a good girl, crazy bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too'

I think this is saying that she is perfect, the female equivalent of the American dream.

'It's a long day living in reseda
There's a freeway runnin through the yard
I'm a bad boy cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin her heart'

He left her, and because he lives in an uneventful area and there are just long lony days, he has time to think about it, and the fact that he left, but doesn't miss her.

'And I'm free, free fallin,fallin
Yeah I'm free, free fallin,fallin'

I think that the words of the chorus are saying that he lets himself get lost in these thoughts.

'All the vampires walkin through the valley
They move west down ventura boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts'

I think that vampires are his way of saying memories, or unresolved issues. By going west they are effectively travelling out of their lives. All the boys are too scared to be seen, so they stand in the shadows where they are less visible, hiding. All the girls are at home with broken hearts.

And I'm free, free fallin,fallin
Now I'm free, free fallin,fallin
Free fallin, now I'm free fallin, now I'm
Free fallin, now I'm free fallin, now I'm

'I wanna glide down over mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
Wanna free fall out into nothin
Gonna leave this world for a while'

He realises that just by thinking about her this much, he really does miss her. And gives into those feelings.

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
