Lyrics for Love Is Noise as interpreted by MangoCucumbers

Love Is Noise Lyrics
Will those feet in modern times
Walk on soles that are made in China?
Feel the bright prosaic malls
In the corridors that go on and on and on

Are we blind - can we see?
We are one - incomplete
Are we blind - In the shade
Waiting for lightning - to be saved
Cause love is noise and love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 singing again
Love is noise and love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 singing again, again, again

Will those feet in modern times
Understand this world痴 affliction
Recognise the righteous anger
Understand this world痴 addiction

I was blind - couldn稚 see
What was here in me
I was blind - insecure
I felt like the road was way too long, yeah
Cause love is noise and love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 feeling again
Love is noise and love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 feeling again
Love is noise, love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 singing again
Love is noise, love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 singing again, again, again, again, again, again

Cause love is noise, love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 feeling again
Love is noise, love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 feeling again
Love is noise, love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 feeling again
Love is noise, love is pain
Love is these blues that I知 feeling again
Come on, come on, ah come on, ah come on
Now come on, now come on, now come on
Now come on

Will those feet in modern times
Walk on soles made in China?
Will those feet in modern times
See the bright prosaic malls?
Will those feet in modern times
Forgive me all my sins
Love is noise
Come on

Originally I hated this song. It just didn't sound like The Verve to me or something. But now I'm totally addicted to it.

Not quite sure what exactly the meaning is though.

I agree...at first listen, it seems more like a Richard Ashcroft solo joint than a whole band effort...but it IS rather catchy, and that repeating background vocal totally makes the song. Still, for a first single, especially a comeback single, I would've went with a full-on rocker, although the band did give us the great "Mover" for free. I think the song is about how music can open our eyes and perceptions to stop being so close-minded of the world around us.

I believe it's commenting on the destructiveness of human encroachment and development and serving as a warning that once we lose something it's gone.

I agree with you all. When I first heard this song, I didn't really apprecieate it as much as I do now. I guess after listening to it on repeat, it not only grew on me, but it made me realise how simple it is, yet but a big meaning it carries. & they say it's the simple things in life that matter in the end.

To me I interpret it as acknowledging, understanding and coming to terms with the terrible state and condition some parts of the world are and the many world issues that have yet to be reslolved. Even though there is so much suffering, and problems in our world today, and instead of focusing on the negativity, I guess he's managed to find some peace through himself. He's realised that even though he doesn't have the power to change the world for the better, he does however have the power help the world by change himself for the better, one less person whose adding more suffering and pain to this world.
I think the chorus in the song is also sending out the message that living is loving. To live is to love. The reason why we continue to journey towards the end of the road, figuratively speaking, is to love and be loved. To attach and to be attached to things, people, emotions, places etc that are on earth.
I also feel it's about seeking redemption through love, there's a lot of repitition and conjunctive meanings, especially in the final verse:

"Will those feet in modern times
Walk on soles made in China?
Will those feet in modern times
See the bright prosaic malls?
Will those feet in modern times
Forgive me all my sins
Love is noise"
This makes me think of going through the world's entire history, and the greatest and worst moments in time. & He's wondering if people will accept him and look past his sins, that he has committed through his lifetime, just as though they have with many terrible things that have happened throughout the history of the world, such as wars.

It's an beautiful song, and I'm kinda disappointed in myself that I disregarded it a little at first. Change is important and just because it carries a style of sound different to their other songs, it shouldn't under value it's worth. Priceless.

It's borrowing from 'Jerusalem' by William Blake.

'And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic Mills?'

etc.

The first two lines of the song are a present-day interpretation of Blake's - both question society [Blake critcises the industrial revolution of the 18th century, Ashcroft on globalisation/capitalism/mass-production].

One of the things that first stuck out when I heard this song were the lines:

Will those feet in modern times
Walk on soles that are made in China?

I was thinking of it as 'soles' being interchangeable with 'souls'...."Walk on souls that are made in China" I don't know if the band did it on purpose or not, but it seems to be a reference to the idea of everything being manufactured in our lives, and that in the future even our souls might not be our own, but will be manufactured for us....

I think that KMP's right by saying that it references Jerusalem by William Blake, I think that jalloyd's onto something with the double meaning of "sole" but I think that the song is much more spiritual than everyone else has said.

The verses ask "Will those feet in modern times walk on soles made in China" and I think that this is the persona expressing their wondering whether or not the same Jesus of the Bible, can save us today .
The song climaxes with "Will those feet in modern times/Pardon me for my sins" which is clearly biblical. Also the title includes the greatest theme in Christianity - love, even when it's painful or difficult to accept; it's still there (what is it? Christians believe that God is love, so God is noise?).

The answer ultimately to the question posed in this song is yes.

Jesus Christ will walk in modern times, every knee shall bow; and he shall pardon the sins of believers.

The line that particularly strikes me, like jalloyd, was:

Will those feet in modern times
Walk on soles that are made in China?

the meanings are litteral - the soles of your shoes were probably made in china; and more phlosophical - are we exploiting (or walking over) the chinese population because of their cheap labour, or is our old world now dependant on producing nations, them holding us up?

Very nice song, love the verve.

I love this song! The second i heard it i was hooked. I have a bit of a different interpretation of the song. I think it's about how love is intangible as a feeling like noise and pain - "Love is noise, love is pain...". Either of these feelings can be expressed in so many ways and i do believe it does have a bit of a connection to the problems in the world today. Also, i think another lyric in the song has a connection to our global problems -" We are one, imcomplete". This means that we are one as a whole, living on the same planet and we will always be imcomplete because nothing is perfect and everything and everybody has problems.

If you have watched the video too, there is are a lot of clips of chinese dancers and different aspects of there culture. I agree with bigeddie about what he said, how we exploit their population.

Awesome song

Well... Long time, no see The Verve... And now that they're back, I think that they're better than ever. I don't really understand the song, but in my head, this is all about how inspirational love is, how much can it affect your life, in a good or in a bad way, the impact that it has on simple lives. But that's just my 2 cents...

i think it s really positive that this song doesn't remind of the usual verve sound...to me their comeback is all about gettin' a little distant from their old image...renovatin' themselves...evolvin' generally...i was just thinkin'....of course love is noise cause it consists of all these intense emotions and feelings u get when u find it...if u find it...when u feel like u're going to explode...when u sense what's gonna come after that and nonetheless all u want is to experience it...i dunno...i m just writin' in random....just a simple observer who wants to become a participant in the game of love...someday...whatever...and it goes on and on...love is noizzzzzzz..........

nah... This song is about manufactured pop music and the 'X factor' culture of today. Richard is a strong hater of this culture.

Its about people who sing about love and deep feeling without the passion of being in that deep feeling, its just fake, unlike himself (Richard) sings about love and pain and the blues he feels everyday. when you see him sing he really does sing with passion even looking like he might cry...

Thats what I think it might be about anyway. great song
