Oh, and when will our heartbeats fall into two lines
And the click-clack of our boot heels beat out the same time
Oh, and when will your hand find itself in mine?
Oh, and when will your hand find itself in mine?

And though I don't know your real name
Your real age, or your shoe size
I will leave this bedroom chair
And this keyboard behind

And I will love you in reality and dreams
And I will love you in reality and dreams

And though it kills me to know
That when we are through
You go to your real lover
Who'll put real kisses on you

Oh well, an ex is about the best that I can do
Oh well, an ex is about the best that I can do

And so this lonely, lonely hull
Has no use left for living
After finding her love
In a heart so unpermitting

And I will die and never ever hold your hand
And I will die and never ever hold your hand

But I'll kiss my lips and I'll blow it to you
It'll be the last thing that I ever do
And wherever you go and whatever you do
There's a man underground that will always love you

Oh, wherever you go and whatever you do
There's a man underground that will always love you

Wherever you go and whatever you do
There's a man underground that will always love you

General Comment:i honestly don't think it's about an internet relationship.
i think it's about a boy with a terminal illness, who is in love with someone who happens to be in a relationship, and the someone loves him back but chooses to stay in the relationship they're in - 'when we are through, you go to your real lover, who'll put real kisses on you'
this song seems like a bit of a dying letter in the way it's written like it is addressed to the person he is in love with - 'wherever you go and whatever you do, there's a man underground that will always love you'
    i don't know, it's just me though

General Comment:I love this song. The metronome is the clicking of keyboard keys as he talks to her online. I think she already has a real-life partner but is cyber-cheating on him with this man and not taking it too seriously, but he has fallen in love with her. Then he realises that he will never actually meet her and that her heart belongs to someone else so he kills himself. That's not really a dramatic take on it because he does say 'It'll be the last thing that I ever do' and 'There's a man underground that will always love you.' I think that's what they meant by that.

General Comment:I was in an internet relationship before, twice. Both of the women were in relationships, one was married and one had a boyfriend, both had kids. So I can totally relate to this song, every lyric in it refers to an internet relationship. The line that hurt me everytime was "it kills me to know that when we are through, you go to your real lover who puts real kisses on you" I know exactly how he feels, it killed me! She has two lovers, and the internet one will always come second so he is her second lover.... I always felt the line about a man underground had to do with the fact that he was maybe in Wales (where Charlie Fink is from) and she was in the states so to her he would be underground?

General Comment:Yeah. Definitely an internet love affair. Specifically with someone he's met in Second Life. Hence the title "Second Lover" as opposed to just Lover #2. He's both. He's the 'other man' that she's clearly having an emotional affair with but also, he's her romantic partner in Second Life.

    Sad.

This is a lyric from Noah and the Whale’s song ‘Second Lover’. That whole song makes me cry everytime I listen to it, but it’s one of my favourite songs at the same time.

But I was thinking about this line of the song, and how many people there are whose hands I’ve wanted to hold and never could…

General Comment:i think this song is just relating to a man who's in love with a woman who has a significant other, so he can never really kiss her or do anything to show his feelings for her.

General Comment:I agree with lulinasaurus, I think that it is about an internet affair, which is why it is called "Second Lover."

General Comment:Because it seems to be about a long-distance relationship conducted largely through the typed word, I always heard the line as "An 'x' is the best I can do'; IE, he'll never kiss her for real, and can only type the letter to represent the action. Then again, I don't have access to the lyrics that came with the album, but pretending is nice.

'And so this lonely, lonely HEART'
