Lyrics for Old White Lincoln as interpreted by lowapr

Old White Lincoln Lyrics
If I could write, I'd tell you how much I miss these nights.
Where we dig around the bones, try to find peace and patches for the holes.
I lit a cigarette on a parking meter.
Corner boys told her how I was dying to meet her.
Like a prayer I said, on a dead man's knee.
You drove up like a parade.

You and your high top sneakers and your sailor tattoos.
Your old '55 that you drove through the roof.
Of the sky, up above these (?) stars.
Where you just kept coming apart, straight in my arms.

And I miss her sometimes.
Shaking like a leaf on the corner of life.
But I heard it's alright.
The radio spoke to a good friend of mine.
And I could feel it coming up as the nights getting warm.
Saw your summer dress hanging on the back of the lawn.
Like a dream I remember from an easier time.
With the top rolled down on a Saturday night.

You and your high top sneakers and your sailor tattoos.
Your old '55 that you drove through the roof.
Of the sky, up above these (?) stars.
Where you just kept coming apart, straight in my arms.
Right in my arms.

And I always dreamed of Classic cars and movie screens.
Trying to find someway to be redeemed.
Baby darling, we will be, in the cold cold ground.

You and your high top sneakers and your sailor tattoos.
Your old '55 that you drove through the roof.
Of the sky, up above these (?) stars.
Where you just kept coming apart, straight in my arms.
You fell straight in my arms.

It's glittering stars for most. In the first line it's 'Glimmering' stars though.

It is for sure not "glimmering/glittering" at all. I'm pretty sure its "different". And the line "Baby darling, we will be, in the cold cold ground" should be "Bring a dollar with you baby, in the cold cold ground" it's a line out of a Cold Cold Ground by Tom Waits.

i saw gaslight anthem two nights in a row last week, and they played this song both nights, but the first night brian prefaced it by saying "i used to date this girl, who's dad didnt really care for me" and then he smiled, gave a little laugh, and began the song

from the liner notes:

you and your high top sneakers
and your sailor tattoos
and your Ol '55 that you drove through the roof
of the sky up above these indifferent stars while you just
kept coming apart, right in my arms

This is the song that got me hooked to GA, and also one of my favorite. I agree that it's about a guy simply missing and reminiscing his (ex?)girlfriend, it's pretty straightfoward.

Brian Fallon did a little acoustic session for spin.com, in it he gaves a good background on this song

"Baby darling, we will be, in the cold cold ground." is wrong.

It's "Bring a dollar with you, baby, in the cold, cold ground." That's an homage to Tom Waits, and his song "Cold Cold Ground". Just one of several homages and references that Fallon makes in his songs.

"Corner boys" is def a reference to something, I think. I think it's a ref to Joe Strummer but I could be wrong.

"Corner Boys" is another Tom Waits reference from the song "Jersey Girl". This song is littered with Tom Waits references: Cold cold ground, Ol' 55 is also a Tom Waits song (referring to the 1955 Lincoln), (Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night, etc, most are from the album "Heartattack & Vine (Hanging like a leaf on the corner of Vine).

PS - If any of you could find the Tom Waits storytellers, it is great. He tells an awesome story about a friend of his who found himself in a compromising situation with his 1955 Lincoln Capri, which lead Tom to write Ol' 55.

Saw them the other night, and instead of the "Bring a dollar with you, baby," line, he went with "You don't have to deal with the dealers. Let your boyfriend deal with the dealers. It only gets inconvenient, when you wanna get high alone." Stellar. The Hold Steady rules.
