You can tell Gayle, if she calls
That I'm famous now for all of these rock and roll songs
And even if that's a lie
She should've given me a try
When were kids on the field of the first day of school
I would've been her fool
And I would've sang out your name in those old high school halls
You tell that to Gayle, if she calls

And you can tell Jane, if she writes
That I'm drunk off all these stars and all these crazy Hollywood nights
That's total deceit
But she should've married me
And tell her I spent every night of my youth on the floor
Bleeding out from all these wounds
I would've gotten her a ride out of that town she despised
You tell that to Janey, if she writes

But boys will be boys and girls have those eyes
That will cut you to ribbons sometimes
And all you can do is just wait by the moon
And bleed if it's what she says you ought to do

You remind Anna, if she asks why
That a thief stole my heart while she was making up her mind
I heard she lives in Brooklyn with the cool
Goes crazy over that New York scene on 7th Avenue
But I used to wait at the diner, a million nights without her
Praying she won't cancel again tonight
And the waiter served my coffee with a consolation sigh
You remind Anna, if she asks why

Tell her it's all right

You know it's hard to tell you this
Oh, it's hard to tell you this
Here's looking at you, kid

General Comment:Love this song. It's like such a thing all guys go through. You fall in love in middle school, in high school, in college. and if you're lucky, like me, you wind up with the girl you were meant for all along. You treat her like a princess then you get to say to the other girls: "This is what you missed out on, and you know what, I'm not even bitter and heartbroken because I found the you that wasn't you that I'd been waiting for all along. Hope you're having fun without me." It's like a fuck-you song without any anger. Think of all the girls listening that could have been with a dude like Brian Fallon and are now with some schmuck/ he stuck it to them, and not even in a mean way.

General Comment:Brian Fallon really is a great lyricist, this song in my opinion is literally saying that despite being hung up on all of your past ex's you will eventually find someone with the line that "a thief stole my heart". It seems that once you find that person that you can finally say so long to all of the people who broke your heart with the line "here's looking at you kid" the person is finally saying goodbye and that they dont need to be reminded of them anymore.

General Comment:Well I read all those comments and came up with the following:

His "relation" to Anna is the exact opposit to the other lost girls. She tells mutual friends that she's having those crazy parties and so on, but he knows that she is lying in the same way he is to others.
She wasn't sure about him back then, so he fell for another girl instead. He knows what she is doing, so instead of lying to her in the same way, he explains why he left her, and tells her its all right.
I haven't watched casablanca, but that part seems brilliant.

My Interpretation:Incas terms of Jane and Gail, the singer is bitter about their rejection. He wants to tell Gail that he's famous, and show off his success to Jane. He wants them to think that he is happy, and know that he would have given them a better life. However, he found Ana, the girl who he should have married, and lets her get away. Now he waits in vain for her to come back even though everybody in his life knows that she is not waiting for him any longer. He wants to tell Gail and Jane that they lost out on something great, and he wants to tell Ana that he is sorry for settling with someone who was ready to fall in love with him rather than put in the effort to win her over. Now he is going to wait as long as it takes, even if she never comes.

From this song I sort of get the vibe of "I could have anybody, but I love the girl who moved on."

With regards to the title, I think that the singer is accepting that Ana moved on, but knows that he will always love her. Since the song is so conditional (...if she calls, if she writes, if she asks why), I can't help but wonder whom he's speaking to in the end. I think "it's hard to tell you this" is directed to himself, saying that it is difficult to accept, and "here's looking at you kid" is a silent monent of dedication. I picture him drinking alone but still toasting to her.

My Interpretation:I'm with Jax5150 on this one. It's Brian's version of Springsteen's 'Good luck, goodbye' in Bobby Jean. He tried his best with those girls, tried to be what he thought they wanted: a rock and roll star, a guy with a car who would take them out of their dead end town, a guy who shows up every time. But those girls never showed so much devotion. Gayle never gave him a chance, Jane wouldn't marry him and Anna was unreliable.

The song is one last goodbye to those girls and all the pain he's been holding onto. He can't carry it around with him anymore. It's difficult for him to forgive - he can't even say it. The best he can manage is 'tell her it's alright' and a vague line from a movie 'here's looking at you kid'.

Maybe he realised that he was giving too much without ever directly asking these girls for anything in return, maybe he found someone who gave as much as he did or maybe he's still alone and he's just looking for some peace.

General Comment:It's the absolute quintessential lost love song. This song doesn't leave things so resolved, it's about feeling lost or unresolved in the tragic loss of love. When you're not sure if you've given up on a Love, you want them still to want you, you want them to think of you as a great person so that maybe, just maybe you could give it a go again (if it weren't so fucked up) you want all your dreams to be true, so you'll be more attractive and could go back to them honorably. It's about feeling alone in the world, even at a party or where-have-you, without the one who still keeps your heart, even if they're not keeping it right, and you didn't keep theirs right. It's about feeling bad for hurting someone you love, and having to live with that, with yourself as you try to move on (even though you still want a way back to them, either through you mum, your sister, whoever, 'if she calls home, tell her what I don't have the right to say'). It's about holding on and all the myths you create for the grandeur of your commitment to them, because as messed up as it is/was, it was still profound and defines your heart, the very way you feel. It's about giving someone a thousand chances to choose you, but having it stolen away from both of you in the meantime. And so much more. This song just nails it. Maybe the best love song EVER. Here's looking at you kid, I feel has more to do with the fact that he stills spends lots of time with them even though he can't talk with them, just call them up out of the blue. It's the 'looking at you kid' when you walk away from a party you can't relate to... down to the beach to be with all the loves who maybe the moon will send a message to for you... 'Boys will be boys, and girls have those eyes' i.e., boys will fuck up a good thing, and girls will show you what you did, and it'll tare you to pieces for a long time to come - 'waiting by the moon'. Ya, this song encapsulates the lions share of the tragedy of love in 3 simple verses (and a couple bridges).

General Comment:The speaker still wants to believe each woman may inquire about him; he still wants each woman to believe that he is famous, successful, and happy even though none of that is true. He believes he's let the disappointment of all those failed relationships go, but in each moment of the song he's showing us that he hasn't.

General Comment:I think that this song is absolutely gorgeous. And to whoever said that is strikes your heart strings when you hear of an ex, no matter the ending or time, that's a bulls eye at its best.
What wonderful piece of musical intelligence to come out of a generation filled with a whole bunch of crap.

But as to "the thief" who stole his heart while his waiting waiting for Anna to make up her mind, I feel a sense of regret in that last stanza, even if it's not direct because there's clearly a feeling of letting go of an ex lover of some sort. But the connotation of the word thief is not all that pleasant, it comes with theft, and taking something that doesn't belong to you. So even though he was waiting for her, and she never gave him an answer (at least not at the appropriate time), the thief, whoever it may be is just on his/her path to becoming another name that strikes emotional dread and heartbreak for the protagonist of the song. Even going with the ending of Casablanca, when she gets on that plane, the phrase, "here's looking at you, kid" isn't filled with a happy ending, or a solid, stable one for that matter either. It ends in a melancholy tone that maybe one day those names will leave your memory and everyone else's and maybe one day, that thief can be your love, and the pain and heartbreak given by an ex was just worth it all at the end of the day.

That's my take on it at least.

My Interpretation:The song is him sitting down and saying to all the girls that could have been. Look at what I was and you should have given me the chance but you didnt, and now we cant be. Its a shame but oh well. This is the message in the end of casablanca too, Rick says to Ilsa, here's looking at you kid. Meaning look at what we are, what we were but its a shame now.

General Comment:I love the added detail about the pub fights listed above. Actually, even though the phrase "Here's looking at you, kid" was made famous by Casablanca, I'm glad there is a bit of background as to its origin. Makes the song even that more interesting, as if the author is also ready for a punch in the gut as he lifts his glass. Bravo, man.

This song seems to take on more meaning the more girlfriends I part ways with. Because of mutual friends, their name seems to always be peeking around the corner waiting to find you vulnerable, and it always seems to arrive at the worst time. Some people, like the waiter in the diner, get it and sigh with you. The song for me reminds me of how stupid I have been to invest so much into some women, only to have them rip my heart out. And of course, in some cases, I simply moved on. But somehow hearing about their lives, whether good or bad, always seems to strike a heart chord. And thus, guys join rock bands and play until their fingers bleed and then get drunk. As was mentioned above, those names Janey, Anna, etc. could easily be replaced by other names. I think that is why this song is loved by so many people. Its not a happy song, but its a song of truth.
