Lyrics for Here's Looking at You, Kid as interpreted by lowapr

Here's Looking at You, Kid Lyrics
You can tell Gayle, if she calls, that I'm famous now for all of these rock and roll songs.
And even if that's a lie, she should've given me a try.
When were kids on the field of the first day of school.
I would've been her fool.
And I would've sang out her name in those old high school halls.
You tell that to Gayle, if she calls.

And you can tell Jane, if she writes, that I'm drunk off all these stars and all these crazy hollywood nights.
That's total deceit, but she should've married me.
And tell her I spent every night of my youth on the floor, bleeding out from all these wounds.
I would've gotten her a ride out of that town she despised.
You tell that to Janey, if she writes.

But boys will be boys and girls have those eyes that will cut you to ribbons sometimes.
And all you can do is just wait by the moon and bleed if it's what she says you oughta do.

You remind Nana, if she asks why, that a thief stole my heart while she was making up her mind.
I heard she lives in Brooklyn with the cool, goes crazy over that New York scene on 7th Avenue.
But I used to wait at the diner, a million nights without her, praying she won't cancel again tonight.
And the waiter served my coffee with a consolation sigh.
You remind Nana, if she asks why.

You know it's hard to tell you this.
Oh it's hard to tell you this.
Here's looking at you, Kid.

Correction Suggestions:

- I'm believe it's "Anna", not "Nana"
- I thought it might have been "side" instead of "sigh" on "the waiter served my coffee with a consolation side", as in a consolation side dish of food or something. But I guess it could be either. Hard to tell

Everything else looks good though, this is one of my favorite songs on the album. Kinda Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts-ish. Awesome

Also you left out one line where he says

"You remind Anna, if she asks why.
Tell her it's alright."

does anyone know what "Here's looking at you, Kid." means at the end as the title?"

It's a line from the film 'Casablanca', and the leading man says it to the leading lady when he tells her that he regretably has to leave her forever (hence the use of the lines 'Hard to tell you this', just like it was hard for the film's character to tell her).

Beautiful song, and the meaning is very straight forward.

Just some food for thought:

This phrase is actually a toast that originated around the fights that occurred in the pubs of old. It was commonplace for a patron to wait until his adversary was drinking from their stein of ale (and their vision was therefore blocked by the stein) to attack ... it bettered their odds of success. Tis led to the development of the glass-bottomed stein in which the drinker could keep the other patrons in their vision even when drinking.

Thus came the toast "Here's looking at you"

I love the mood of this song, it's so....emotional lol. I guess the song's pretty straight foward. There are all these girls in his life that hurt him and he's just saying goodbye to all of them. He's saying that it was a waste that they all didn't want to be with him. I think he's saying goodbye to his past. He probably had some type of feeling for each of these girls, even after they dumped him, and this is a goodbye to those girls but only in his mind, since they all moved on and don't really care about him in real life.

"Here's looking at you, kid" is like "I hope you have a good life, but i'm finally moving on and letting go of you, so farewell."

It is indeed "Anna", not "Nana".

And to correct the first comment, it is "sigh", not "side".

i'm pretty sure "tell her it's alright" is between "you remind anna if she asks why" and "you know it's hard to tell you this

The quote "Here's looking at you, kid" doesn't mean "Have a good life." At the end of Casablanca, Rick forces Ilsa to board the plane with her husband, saying that she would regret staying with him. "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." What he's saying is, it was right to part because they would regret being together.

Look at that last verse. Anna is up in Brooklyn with the cool and the Seventh Avenue scene... this is a reflection of his own deceit in the first couple verses. Instead of "tell my ex that I'm a rock star, drunk on Hollywood nights" it's "I heard my ex is hanging out with Miles Davis on Seventh Avenue." The lies he would tell others are the same lies that he's been told. And, the insecurities he has are the same as theirs.

What's happening in this song is, the singer begins in regret and deceit, and ends in sincerity. At the end of the song he's realized that these past relationships weren't going to work, that it was right that they ended, and that he's in the right place now with the thief who stole his heart.

"Here's Looking At You, Kid" is a film citation by Humphrey Bogart playing Rick Blain in "Casablanca", 1943.
Therefore i guess this song is about girls who dumped you or tricked and abused your relationship and you finally caught up with them (i hope you understand what i mean by that - i'm german, sorry) and now are done with them and you dont wanna see em again... In the end you're always smarter than before (german proverb, dunno if the english language has something similar, i hope you'll get this :D)

I find it interesting that Anna seems to be the only one he doesn't admit that he's lying to.

Sounds almost like a suicide note, asking whoever reads this to let the girls mentioned in it how he felt about them, and how they made a mistake not choosing him. The first line of the first two verses, however, is written using phrases such as, "I am," and "I'm drunk," which could imply that when the reader does speak with these girls, he will still be living.

I think he's just saying goodbye to heartbreak and moving on, but wants all of those girls to know that they messed up. The "Casablanca" idea talked about above is dead on, too.

It's beautiful.
You know the feeling when you start to miss past relationships that ended for a reason? You have all those Janeys and Annas calling you even though it's over. And the narrator doesn't even want to answer their letters/calls, just reminds them of the bad things and the ways they rejected him ??

I love it.

The Casablanca quote is just a cherry on the top :::D
