the song essentially is about death and what happens & what they maybe hint in a lot them oldies songs.

more directly it talks about the loss of a close young friend dying in a car accident on the way home frm one of his favorite bands/concert in south nj on 7-8-07.
thus y he ask did you hear yer fav song one last time. young boys young girls stems frm the other two in the car who lived/showing support...i think.
its just a great song for when you loose somone/ great lament.

"americanlow" I don't think that's exactly correct, either.

The song is about the death of a close friend. The singer is asking the deceased friend what he heard when he died. Somewhat the same line of thinking as the belief that we see a bright light through a tunnel when we pass, I think the singer is suggesting that there might be audible sensations as well...He is wondering if his friend heard his/her favorite song, if they heard the sound of the church choir singing at the funeral, etc.

The '59 sound is simply a reference to a genre or small collection of music, either from the 1959 timeframe, or music by Holly, Vallens, and Bopper, that brought back great memories of their childhood, when they used to hear that music coming through the radio of their grandparents.

I think this is just a song about a friend dying in a car crash, at far too young an age. It's an extremely relatable song for alot of people who have lost friends or family at a young age. Also, I think the first verse of this song is one of the most beautiful bits of writing I have ever heard. But read the lyrics in the 2nd comment, because the main ones above are buggered.

This is such a beautiful, uplifting song about losing someone "before their time". Such an amazing band, makes me smile every time I hear them played on the radio because this break they've been given lately is very well deserved.

this song cant be about 3 singers who died in a plane crash in '59 coz none of the band members are old enough to be playing a show down the road from the crash.
the most likely meaning for this song is the theory about close friends relatives or partners.
the chains do refer to being remembered for bad deeds, what the lead singer is trying to say is that if the person who died was seen as a rebel at times in society that he would remembered for the times he wasnt a rebel.
i think this song is a beautiful tribute and extremely well written, im new to this band because im more into the metal and screamo scene but find myself moving to other genres.
this song reminds me of my granny in ways too, it has that kind of old style swing sound to it but at the same time sounds modern, these guys are an amazing band and deserve to be famous.

On February 3rd, 1959, three of the world's greatest musicians died in a plane crash. that day has gone down in history as "the day the music died". it has been written about in songs and books for 50 years. while some lines in the song relate to more personal issues, the song is titled after this even as buddy holly, ritchie valens and the big bopper were the 59 sound.

this song could never fail to make me cry.
i'm not sure if it's through sadness or happiness.
the lyrics are really deep.
but it reminds me of some great memories too.
probably cause it was one of my friends who introduced me to the song.

I would say this has two meanings. Firstly, and clearly, it is a tribute to death and quite likely someone they knew who died, as most people have said. I would also say that as the song talks about the song that was played at this funeral, and as it questions what song we will play at our funerals, it is questioning what our legacy. I think the line, "I hope we don't hear Marley's chains that we forged in life" refers to the fact that each chain Marley wore was for some bad deed he did in life, that is, that he hopes we will not be remembered by our bad deeds but by our good, in this song signified by the music: his grandfather/grandmother is remembered by the song through their radio; the friend is remembered The reference between these lines about the chains in the hospital wards, along with the first and second lines of the second verse, suggests that as we die - and as we live, I guess - all we think of ourselves is our mistakes, our "chains".

I always presumed the mentions of chains to be a reference to the song "Chain Gang" by Sam Cooke which was popular around 1959. This song could represent the '59 sound which came through on their grandfather's radio. The song can also be considered a modern spiritual, which ties into the the gospel choir reference as well. The song features the chanting of "hoos and ha's" which are very gospel like and may even be performed by a true gospel choir on the original recording. Perhaps this was the favorite song of the person who died?

Nightclub Dwight is completly right about the Marleys chain reference, the song was written about a friend that died in a car accident on the way back from asbury lanes, hence the line:

"Marley's Chains," to be precise. The reference is to A Christmas Carol. Marley was Scrooge's partner, a ghost who was doomed to wander the Earth carrying behind him the heavy chains of his wickedness during life.
