So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Yeah, I get it you're an outcast
Always under attack, always coming in last
Bringing up the past, no one owes you anything
I think you need a shotgun blast, a kick in the ass
So paranoid, watch your back
Oh my, here we go
Another loose cannon gone bipolar
Slipped down, couldn't get much lower
Quicksand's got no sense of humor
I'm still laughing like hell
You think that by cryin' to me
Lookin' so sorry that I'm gonna believe
You've been infected by a social disease
Well, then take your medicine
I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow, I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
I'm so sick of this tombstone mentality
If there's an afterlife, then it'll set you free
But I'm not gonna part the seas
You're a self-fulfilling prophecy
You think that by cryin' to me
Lookin' so sorry that I'm gonna believe
You've been infected by a social disease
Well, then take your medicine
I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain somehow I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow, I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up, when you gonna wake up and fight?
I created the sound of madness
Wrote the book on pain
Somehow, I'm still here to explain
That the darkest hour never comes in the night
You can sleep with a gun
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
When you gonna wake up and fight
For yourself?
When you gonna wake up and fight

Its about a person who points the blame and doesn't take responsibility. For example my frienemy has bipolar disorder and she was molested by her father. And you would think that not feeling bad for her is a dick move but get this.He is in jail now and has been for a while. She has lots of friends and she turns them all against eachother just so we could pay attention to only her and when we call her out of her lies and her bullshit she pulls the "my daddy raped me" card. She pretends like she cant be happy but its all because she doesnt try.UGH im off topic THE SONG IS ABOUT A PERSON WHO DOESNT WANNA TRY TO FIX THEMSELVES THEY JUST WANT PITY AND THIER JUST FCKING FULL OF ANNOYING SADNESS!AND HOW EVERYONE HAS PROBLEMS ITS WHAT YOU MAKE OUT OF IT THAT DEFINES YOU !dnt let them bring u down get rid of those kinds of ppl thier no good
