Wrap me in a bolt of lightning
Send me on my way still smiling
Maybe that's the way I should go
Straight into the mouth of the unknown
I left the spare key on the table
Never really thought I'd be able
To say I merely visit on the weekends
I lost my whole life and a dear friend
I've said it so many times
I would change my ways, no, never mind
God knows I've tried

Call me a sinner, call me a saint
Tell me it's over, I'll still love you the same
Call me your favorite
Call me the worst
Tell me it's over, I don't want you to hurt
It's all that I can say
So I'll be on my way

I finally put it all together, but nothing really lasts forever
I had to make a choice that was not mine
I had to say goodbye for the last time
I kept my whole life in a suitcase
Never really stayed in one place
Maybe that's the way it should be
You know I live my life like a gypsy

I've said it so many times
I would change my ways, no, never mind
God knows I've tried

Call me a sinner, call me a saint
Tell me it's over, I'll still love you the same
Call me your favorite
Call me the worst
Tell me it's over, I don't want you to hurt
It's all that I can say
So I'll be on my way

I'll always keep you inside
You healed my heart and my life
And you know I tried

Call me a sinner, call me a saint
Tell me it's over, I'll still love you the same
Call me your favorite
Call me the worst
Tell me it's over, I don't want you to hurt
It's all that I can say
So I'll be on my way
So I'll be on my way
So I'll be on my way

It's about being madly in love with someone and them losing their feelings for you because you couldn't be the kind of person they needed. And ending the relationship before feeling for each other get worse, because even though things aren't working out he truely loves her he isn't able to make her as happy as he wishes she was so he will step aside. Much like the saying If you love something, Set it free... If it comes back, it's yours, If it doesn't, it never was yours....

I think it's about finding that a breakup was for the best, yet knowing that she'll still hold a special place in your heart because she helped you out of a dark place.

    My Interpretation

When I first heard it I thought the song was basically saying "No matter what you think of me, I still love you". I still think it means this, although he could have written this about a past relationship it does not have to be about that. It could be anything or anyone.

Awesome awesome song, my favorite on the new album.

To me the song is about the end of a relationship and understanding that it's time to move and have some closure. He knows it's over but just wants her to say it in black and white.

The song is about losing the one you love the most. Listen to the chorus. He's telling her goodbye because he thinks he can save her some hurt. Painful, beautiful song...

Shinedown is such an amazing band, they have what is probably the best Simple Man cover ever, I actually prefer it to the original, and almost every song is gold, there's not one song that's total shit.

I might be the only one, but i like Us and Them more than the Sound of Madness, the two albums are halfway different genres

I love this song it's just amazing in every way, brings a tear to my eye when he says "i don't want you to hurt" :'(

and to "shiner4life" if you look on youtube there are a few acoustic sessions they done before the album was released of the crow and the butterfly and if you only knew, :) there might be a couple of others I didn't really check

my absolute favorite on this album, so great. very sad tho, and reminds me of a previous relationship of mine. the line "tell me its over i dont want you to hurt" is the line that gets me worst great great song absolutely gorgeous and i agree on the meaning as well he knows the relationship is ending and he wants her to just come out and say it in black and white he just cant believe its over, and he still loves her, but he wants her to be happy and he knows they cant go on its so sad, but so beautiful amazing

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
