Lyrics for Ragged Wood as interpreted by samuelhgarfield

Ragged Wood Lyrics
Whoa-oh-oh

Come down from the mountain, you have been gone too long
The spring is upon us, follow my only song
Settle down with me by the fire of my yearning
You should come back home, back on your own now

The world is alive now, in and outside our home
You run through the forest, settle before the sun
Darling, I can barely remember you beside me
You should come back home, back on your own now

In the evening light, when the woman of the woods came by
To give to you the word of the old man
In the morning tide, when the sparrow and the seagull fly
And Johnathan and Evelyn get tired

Lie to me if you will at the top of Barringer Hill
Tell me anything you want, any old lie will do
Call me back to you

Back to you

This song is great!! What, no comments? It is a pretty straightforward love song, but it is so full of the joy, yearning and uncertainity of young love. It makes me happy. :)

'The world is alive now, in and outside I know
You run through the forest, settle before the sun
Darling, I can barely remember you beside me
You should come back home, back on your own now'

it's glorious.

This song is great, but it sounds like the guitar part is directly taken from My Morning Jacket's "Golden." This is a dangerous thing for them to do, considering that he already sounds exactly like Jim James (the MMJ vocalist).

great tune, but i think you got some one the lines wrong.

"settle down with me by the fire of my yearning"
"the world is alive now in and outside our home"

but who knows! wish there was some place on the internet to read the official lyrics.

I like James, but cmon. Pecknold has a much better voice. And after the last piece of shit album MMJ did they should just be thrilled that people list them as an influence of the obviously superior Fleet Foxes

I agree with EldaAnzari so I changed the lyrics.

To me this song is partially about the beauty of Spring coming alive. I know that feeling living in Seattle, as I imagine Robin does.

Also, this Yeats poem might help understanding this song:

The Ragged Wood by William Butler Yeats

O hurry where by water among the trees
The delicate-stepping stag and his lady sigh,
When they have but looked upon their images -
Would none had ever loved but you and I!

Or have you heard that sliding silver-shoed
Pale silver-proud queen-woman of the sky,
When the sun looked out of his golden hood? -
O that none ever loved but you and I!

O hurty to the ragged wood, for there
I will drive all those lovers out and cry -
O my share of the world, O yellow hair!
No one has ever loved but you and I.

I believe "even in the light" is supposed to be "in the evening light", which would make a pair with the "morning tide".

This is my favorite song on the album, in my mind it's the best showcase of their ability to tell a story with their music by essentially splitting the song into two distinct sections that fit thematically with each other.

I thought in the first verse it was 'only son' rather than 'only song', and 'by the fire my young 'un', although it's pretty hard to make out what he's actually singing.

I've been listening to ff for a while but really only just discovered the last part of ragged wood recently. all i can say is i've been crying since whenever i listen to its amazing sounds, vocals and lyrics. nothing worse than feeling like crap but this song rings true on my current relationship and what i've done to my girl. has a real sense of finality to it and gave me a huge slap in the face.

thanks to the ff dudes.

There are more references to poems from Yeats' book In The Seven Woods (which The Ragged Wood comes from) in here.

FF: "In the evening light, when the woman of the woods came by"

Yeats (Under The Moon): "And the wood-woman whose love was changed to a blue-eyed hawk;"

"The evening light" could be a reference to the title "Under The Moon".

FF: "To give to you the word of the old man"

Yeats (The Old Men Admiring Themselves In The Water):
"I heard the old, old men say
'Everything alters,
And one by one we drop away.'
They had hands like claws, and their knees
Were twisted like the old thorn trees
By the waters.
I heard the old, old men say
'All that's beautiful drifts away
Like the waters.'"

Could Drops in the River be a reference to this poem as well?

The Barringer Hill is a hill near Seattle, on the Eastside around Kirkland. That's where the band is from, and I imagine that's the hill they are singing of. It's not that important to the song meaning as a whole, but I thought it was neat when I heard it the first time.

It's in the morning TIME, not tide.

Also I think Jonathan and Evelyn are probably TIED rather than tired in the morning (in the sense of tied = married)? Think that makes more sense in the context of the song.

If I'm not mistaken, the correct lyrics are: "Settle down with me by the fire of my yearning hearth"
