She told me not to step on the cracks
I told her not to fuss and relax
Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks
But now she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay
I took a knife and cut out her eye
I took it home and watched it wither and die
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile
That's why she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry
I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you pay
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry
You made me cry
You made me cry
You made me cry
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry
I told her not to fuss and relax
Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks

1. being dumped by the "girl with one eye"
2. being dumped because of the "girl with one eye"
She told me not to step on the cracks ...Making fun of the singer's age?
I told her not to fuss and relax ...Shut up!
Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks ...Not innocent, this one is trouble.
But now she sleeps with one eye open ...She'll learn.
That's the price she'll pay ...not to mess with me & my emotions.
I took a knife and cut out her eye ...I tried to see things from her perspective
I took it home and watched it wither and die ...It was too painful
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile ...I should've slit her throat.
That's why she sleeps with one eye open ...She knows
That's the price she'll pay ...She has to live with that.
I said, hey, girl with one eye ...Hey B!
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie ...Mind your own business, This is mine
not yours.
I said, hey, girl with one eye ... You should know
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry ...You hurt me & I will hurt
you much worse. Believe it!
I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you pay
The verses make her out to be an abuser and the line "Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt" is her denying it while the chorus "You made me cry" says that she is the one being hurt by her partner.
The reason that the partner is a female may be to make the other one look weaker which could be another reason the character singing this song is the abuser.
'She told me not to step on cracks' -She warned him not to dare come near her.
‘I told her not to fuss and relax’ –He warned her not to struggle
'Pretty little face stopped me dead in my tracks' -He's obviously attracted to her, since her looks were the first that caught his attention.
'I took a knife and cut out her eye' -I can now safely assume she's rejected him, and succeeded to a certain point. This can also be interpreted as him wanting to teach her a lesson the hard way, since 'Sleeping with one eye open' is a phrase used to show distrust. So he's telling her, if you're so uptight, I'll teach to to permanently distrust everyone.
'That's the price she'll pay' -The price for rejecting him.
'She's lucky I didn't slip her a smile' -A reference to slitting her throat.
'Get your filthy fingers out of my pie' -Filthy, I assume, is because he's already had his way with her and wants nothing more to do with her, or he's insulting her because she refused him. I believe 'Pie' is most likely standing for either his life, or his business.
'I slipped my hand under her skirt, I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt' -I assume, this is when he rounded up on her, trying to get whatever he can out of the girl.
'Oh my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt' -Apparently this wasn't the first time he's done something of the sort.
'I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry' -He obviously didn't cry, but i believe this is an alternative to saying she'd rejected him, and by doing that, insulted his pride. Then we see the second reference to killing in this song, 'Cutting her heart out'.
So, according to this, her pursuer has already decided her fate; he was going to kill her.
Just a thought...
Your explanation about the "filthy fingers out of my pie" line also makes a lot of sense. I also see this line as representing the man's (heavily suppressed) guilt, where the image of the abused girl follows him around, tainting his life. Moreover, "girl with one eye" evokes an image of silent accusation as she watches him, relentlessly.
Anyhow, I feel as if I gained a new level of understanding in this amazing song. Thanks for the interpretation! :)

If I were to go along with the "rape from a males perspective" theory that's going around, I'd take "she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile," as him saying, "You're lucky I'm not cruel enough to laugh/smile at your pain."
i wouldn't care if it was, but girl with one eye was oringinally sang by Ludes, a male rock band.
She just sang it because she likes the song!
I think its brilliant, she puts a mysterious edge on it, and it may be about a sexual experience but it was originally sang by a man
she just did a cover because, lets be honest it is a good song!
She told me not to step on the cracks
I told her not to fuss and relax
Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks (the face of her unborn daughter)
But now she sleeps with one eye open (the baby sleeps inside her womb, the eye perhaps representing the vagina that the baby looks through)
That's the price she'll pay
I took a knife and cut out her eye (making reference to abortion)
I took it home and watched it wither and die (perhaps talking about the foetus withering and dying)
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile (perhaps saying the unborn baby is lucky that she didn't actually give birth to her?)
That's why she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie (saying get out of my womb to the foetus)
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry (I am going to have an abortion because being pregnant has made me cry)
I slipped my hand under her skirt (the abortion)
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt (telling the unborn baby that abortion will not hurt)
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt (her reputation has been ruined by getting pregnant)
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you pay
A bit creepy lol but it was the interpretation I got out of it today after listening to this song for ages and ages and not getting it. It makes me feel very uneasy that's all I know! I love Florence though.
