Lyrics for Kissing The Beehive as interpreted by omegadaxer

Kissing The Beehive Lyrics
[Dan] Lost on a river our hearts beat regular time
Well the landscapes don't
The rivers flowing by
We're just drifting all night long hands to the sky
And a captain, oh he is never denied

I heard them singing out from shore, hands at the sides
Someone brought a rifle overhead to tear at the sky
We're just drifting all night long here with the flies
And the captain, oh he is never denied

[Spencer] As if you didn't know that it would sting
Kissing the beehive
And pissing down the mountain side in the rain
As if you didn't know that it would sting
Kissing the beehive
And fucking up your finger from pushing on the ring
Sing

[Dan] Well we lay
On frigid shores of light
We need nothing of his bitter care, oh
Something strange
And the coast line
Still we need nothing of his bitter hand, oh

[Spencer] I wish I could believe in you
Crashing all the weddings wearing white
But we all hate the landlord baby
It's all right, it's all right
I wish I could believe in who you are
You held your cock in the air and you called it a guitar
You put your face on the glass and you called it good cinema, oh
As if you didn't know that it would sting

Oh, oh, ohhhh

Johnathan, Johnathan
Waterfalls are running thin you know
Here's a holy grail for you to hold
Fire in the hole, fire in the hole, fire in the hole

I'm not a wild party
I'm just an evening at the show
Put the ring back on and take your husband home
Fire in the hole, fire in the hole, fire in the hole

Radio, radio
Why did you leave Virginia's side
It's an alibi, we all know how the music died
Fire in the hole, fire in the hole, fire in the hole

Johnathan, Johnathan
Waterfalls are running thin you know
Here's a finger made from me for you to hold
Fire in the hole, fire in the hole, fire in the hole

[Dan] Estranged from the captain's light
And his bitter hand
Estranged from the captain's light
And his bitter hand

As the album's conclusion, imagine a speeding whirlwind of resurfacing story arcs. Each stanza during the second half offer conclusions and tie-ins to other songs of the album. For instance "Radio, radio..." stanza is linked to California Dreamer.

The song itself, a continuation of Wolf Parade's long-used theme of mistrust of God, depicts the land of creation in chaos. Foolish leaders, rampant warfare, depleting natural resources, intolerant fundamentalists, and disingenious people run amok. Problem of Evil and all that (the problem of reconciling the existence of evil or suffering in the world with the existence of God, a force for infinite good)

Captain = God

"Each stanza during the second half offer conclusions and tie-ins to other songs of the album."

Mm...I see the radio connection to California Dreamer, but don't see any other connections in those last stanzas. Though I do see a lot of throw backs in Dan's lyrics

"Our hearts beat regular time" :: "You know our hearts beat time out very slowly"

"The landscapes don't, rivers flowing by" :: "Getting tired of landscapes, we're just floating"

"We're just drifting on my long hair with the flies" :: "Until then don't tear your hair out, I won't tear it out if you don't"

Some of these may be a stretch. Just things I've noticed.

I believe this song is more so about human nature and our relationship to the natural world. The general idea of my interpretation is man's ignorance and lack of foresight.

"And fucking up your finger from pushing on the ring"

In other words maybe, assuming that things were meant for us even when they clearly don't fit....also about greed. We naturally assume that this world was made for us, this assumption leads us to do whatever we want with it...which as one can see today, detrimental to us (Fucking up the finger...)

"Crashing all the weddings wearing white"

Another statement where we disrupt order and hold no courtesy for nature. For anyone who doesn't know, only the bride is supposed to wear white at the wedding. It is her special day and she should be distinguished from guests. By wearing white, you show a lack of respect to the 'bride' by thinking the rules don't apply to you.

I think the next line is really beautiful, about the cap in the air and face on the glass. This I believe is saying, that our attempts at music and art in comparison to nature's beauty...is like comparing the a hat to a guitar. By holding it up, you also see that we are very proud, and still oblivious.

The song here increases tempo and becomes more frantic. Fire in the hole is a distress signal that would be used for an explosion in a closed area. In the same way, in this second part of the song, our lack of foresight does catch up to us. Its realized that the earth is a closed system and our resources provided by nature are not going to always be here (waterfalls are running thing).

That's one interpretation I thought of...I did not address everything, but gave my basic idea which may be completely wrong. Looking forward to see what other people interpret

[Dan] Estranged from the captain's light

Estranged from the captain's light
And his bitter hand

The song definitly has a man v. god feeling to it. Or reigious v. non-religious. The people in the first stanza have their "hands to the sky" and in the second "hand's at their side." I think a lot of it is also what we do without god. That it may be hard to belive in God but its hard not to believe in him either.

The kissing the behive line means that doing something dangerous is obviously going to hurt. In the case of this song I think it means going without God. I take pushing on the ring, to mean pushing it off, not on, which i think the lyric late on "put the ring back on" agrees with. In this case it could mean divorcing God. I think pissing down the mountain in the rain, means don't expect what you did to make a difference.

The next dan verse then has the people renouncing God and living without him. Spencer's verse expresses that their obviously false things that prevent him from believing.

I think the last verse has shit going wrong without God represented by "Fire in the hole" and "waterfalls are running thin" and Spencer saying that you need to find help. With Spencer offering a "holy grail" or "finger" to hold.

Dan's last verse just means that their are pro's and con's to going it alone, that we may have escaped the bitter hand of god but we also lack his light.

Great song

there is another long song, 10-14 minutes or so, with the same music but different lyrics called Crazy Horse or Wish You Wouldn't Cry... anyone know the words to that? Or more about it and how it became kissing the beehive?

"Crazy Horse" is "Kissing the Beehive". They played the song several times live and named it "Crazy Horse" but they changed the lyrics for the album. Unfortunately they did this! I loved the old lyrics, they are awesome. With changing the lyrics Spencer (and I think he did this) changed the whole song, the meaning of the "original" song. Well, he wrote the original song, too, so I think this is ok =D
The song is awesome, with or without the new lyrics.

Its definitely "I am just an EVENING at the show". That verse is my favorite one in the song. I just remember seeing them last year, when they were playing a lot of these songs, and this was the last song before the encore, I just stood there, jaw gaping. And probably drooling.

Even though Wolf Parade insists that they didn't know that "Kissing the Beehive" was already a novel title, that said novel was ironically authored by a Jonathan. The subject matter of it is somewhat irrelevant to the song though.
Personally, I've always imagined this being religious in nature, specifically to Mormons, only because of the "Beehive" reference, which is the motto of the state of Utah, but also a common metaphor used for and by Mormons in relation to their work ethic.
By that rationale, I've always assumed that "Kissing the Beehive" had something to do with achievements and being successful in a manner related to Mormon culture.

The more I listen to this song (and I basically listen to it on repeat) the more amazing I think it is. It might be perfect.
The line "kissing the beehive"--- I think it refers to someone doing something they know will end up hurting them. Maybe they get something good out of it at first, ie: honey from the beehive, but they should know that it'll sting. A lot of the rest of the song seems to me like non-sequitors, but the line about the captain never being denied could be political. Actually I have no idea what this song is about.

Honestly, i think that this song is just referring to super stardom... We all hate the limelight etc......i think they are just talking about being an indie band and all of a sudden they are recognized everywhere, and although they don't want the fame, they can't help it.....kissing the beehive...inevitability....yea what you think?

I love the live version, I heard it before this one. Lyrics are totally different, and in my opinion much looser, much better.

I always thought it was "You held your gun in the air and you called it a guitar." Maybe I wasn't listening close enough. If it really says "cock" then I'm a little sad haha.

Seing as though this song definately has a belief/disbelief in god or religion, I had an interpretation for a part of the song. When he states that "We all hate the landlord baby, its alright, its alright", for some reason I have always felt he was referring to god as the landlord, seing as though he would be in a context of this is the planet he supposedly created, and Jesus being his baby, thus, we (as in he) hate the landlord baby. Just a thought, let me know what you think

There's a lot of meaning behind this from lots of different arcs, but one thing I glean is a woman being involved with a very dangerous love, wanting escape, trying to force herself into a marriage she's unhappy with, eventually breaking down and trying to start an affair or liberate herself, and being spurned by the man she went to.

this song is clearly about Moby Dick and transitively about cocaine. "a captain who is never denied" sounds like ahab. "fire in the hole!" is when they're killing the whale. Krug also says a metaphor: "kissing the beehive" means "railing coke"
