He says that no matter what happens, he's on her side so whatever it is that he said wrong, he didn't mean it the way that she took it.
It almost seems as if she really does still love him, but she keeps claiming that she doesn't. This seems to have happened more than once before and he's getting tired of it. He keeps asking himself why he wastes his time with her. But he knows deep down that he would do anything for her and all he really wants is to work things out between them.
Halfway through the song, you can tell that she ends up leaving him. Although they arent together, he wants to know if she still loves him. He wants to know if she's happier now, or if she is worse without him.
He knows that he often does things wrong. Either by saying too much or not saying enough. But he just wants to know why she ended it. He needs closure.
