Lyrics for Heart Songs as interpreted by jhexxagon

Heart Songs Lyrics
Gordon Lightfoot sang a song about a boat that sank in the lake at the break of the morning
A Cat named Stevens found a faith he could believe in
And Joan Baez, I never listened to too much jazz
But hippie songs could be heard in our pad
Eddie Rabbitt sang about how much he loved a rainy night
Abba, Devo, Benatar were there day John Lennon died
Mr. Springsteen said he had a hungry heart
Grover Washington was happy on the day he topped the charts, these are the songs

These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singin'

Quiet Riot got me started with the bangin' on my head
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Slayer taught me how to shred
I gotta admit though, sometimes I would listen to the radio
Debbie Gibson, tell me that you think we're all alone
Michael Jackson's in the mirror, I've gotta have faith if I wanna see clear
Never gonna give you up, wish me love or wishing well
It takes two to make a thing go right, If the Fresh Prince starts a fight
Don't you worry for too long 'cause you know these are the songs

These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing

Back in 1991, I wasn't havin' any fun
'Till my roommate said "come on and put a brand new record on"
Had a baby on it, he was naked on it
Then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had upon me
Got together with my bros, in some rehearsal studios
Then we played our first rock show and watched the fan base start to grow.
We signed with David, gave us dough to make a record all our own
The song come on the radio, now people go: this is the song

These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing

These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing
These are the songs I keep singing

i think rivers is talking about how personal music is for his life (which reflects back on the listener). he talks about all these artists and guilty pleasures of his and then realizes that his band releases "heart songs" for other listeners to treasure in their lives. and the cycle repeats on and on...

This song really is extremely original, especially for Weezer. I am really digging the verse melodies, and the lyrics to the bridge are especially fantastic. I love how it turns around to suggest that Weezer songs are now the "heart songs" to us. So true.

I really like these lyrics:

"Back in 1991, I wasn't havin' any fun
'Till my roommate said "come on and put a brand new record on"
Had a baby on it, he was naked on it
Then I heard the chords that broke the chains I had upon me"

I like the allusion to Nirvana ("Had a baby on it, he was naked on it"). It really shows the effect of music upon Rivers himself.

gosh, i almost o.d.ed on pop culture references. i know almost all of what he is singing about, very good. this new weezer album is better than make believe. i disagree with some of rivers musical selection, but he's rivers and he can do what he wants. even if he wants to rick roll all his fans.

I find it interesting that he made the mistake in the Debbie Gibson reference, since the song "I Think We're Alone Now" was done by Tiffany. There's no way he would get this "wrong," so it's definitely a reference to the fact that people always mix those two up. .

This is amazing. You'd have to be pretty ingnorant not to pick up on the Nirvana reference though. He's just singing about his influences really, a similar theme to Jimmy Eat World's 'A Praise Chorus'.

I assume he's referring to Nirvana's Nevermind album. that album changed my life!

"Debbie Gibson, tell me that you think we're all alone" --> Wasn't Tiffany not Debbie Gibson who sang I Think We're Alone Now?

Had to make an account again for this song. Holy fuck this song resonates deeply with me. This is exactly how music should go. I'm in love with music. It's becoming my life as of late. The Nirvana reference is golden. Talking about a cd that finally pushed his liking of music into a love. Very powerful. A passing of the torch for musicians everywhere. I have to wonder if this is the end of Weezer though for that reason.

"These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake for goodness sake
These are the songs I keep singing"

I do this all the time. Go to bed with a song in my head and wake to listen to it more. Thank you for this gift Weezer.

I think people underestimate this song and miss the real meaning of it. I know I did the first time I listened to it. I think because the first chorus is kind of innocent and bit cheezy. Its easy to just skip over it.

My fiance made me listen to it yesterday and I realized what the song is really about...the evolution of River and Weezer. The first chorus is just River and his youth, then the second chorus and beyond you'll notice the whole sound of the song changes and intensifies (at the Nirvana allusion). Apparently Nirvana changed him. Finally this song starts to sound like a Weezer song!

Awesome song. I really feel like I understand them so much more. This song is a testament to their incredible storytelling capability!

sorry to break it to you guys, but this part of the song is actually a reference to PIXIES ep "gigantic", not nirvana's "nevermind". i know, i wanted to believe that too at first, but in a biography about Rivers he states how big of an influence the pixies were on his career.

did Rivers actually say it was a reference to the Pixies? because in the song he says 1991, so it would make more sense if he's referring to Nirvana, simply because Nevermind came out in 1991.

After reading the posts I had to create an account. I am a HUGE Weezer fan and have heard all their songs 1000 times each, and it shames me that everyone forgot one important element.

ITS MAKING FUN OF ALL THOSE PEOPLE!!!!!!! (except Nirvana)

Lets face it. The pop music in the 80's was very bland. It totally sucked. This song is describing how Rivers grew up with these songs and even though they were bad, they have a sense of familiarity with him and remind him of his past, and are thus his "Heart Songs".

When he says Nirvana "broke the chains I had upon me", it is saying how Nirvana was different from everything else he had heard, and inspired him to make music of his own.

To go along with the "making fun of" statement I made before, many of the songs off Red album do this. For example, "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)" is making fun of the long, stupid power ballads from the 80's. Even the title makes fun of those power ballads.

All that being said, and I apologize for the long post, I really love this song

Awcutting: I believe you 100% incorrect in saying that Weezer is making fun of these artists first off how were John Lennon, Joan Baez, Cat Stevens, Michael Jackson, Pat Benatar, Bruce Springting at all considered "cheesy pop" thes are bands that Rivers grew up with he loved them

I usually respect most people's opinions on songs, but awcutting, your reasoning behind the meaning of the song is a really, really big stretch.

Just as heart songs can mean they are familiar to him, they could also mean they are valuable to him, which makes more sense; he uses the word "heart".

and "broke the chains I had upon me" doesn't seem to be condescending.

if kilewithani is right, too, then it kinda contradicts your meaning

I saw the song as acknowledging the influences in one's life, and how the culmination of all those influences affect how someone is now. This song is about weezer's musical evolution, but it can be applied to more than just music - one's influence that makes them the person they are now, for example.
