Lyrics for 1,000,000 as interpreted by vapur

1,000,000 Lyrics
kind of hard
hard to see
when you crawl
on your hands and your knees
with your face
in the trough
wait your turn
while they finish you off
don’t know when it started
don’t know how
should have found out
should have happened by now
got these lines
on my face
after all this time
and i still haven’t found my place

i jump from every rooftop
so high so far to fall
i feel a million miles away
i don’t feel any thing at all

i wake up
on the floor
start it up again
like it matters anymore
i don’t know
if it does
is this really all
that there ever was?
put the gun
in my mouth
close your eyes
blow my fucking brains out
pretty patterns
on the floor
that’s enough for you
but i still need more

i jump from every rooftop
so high so far to fall
i feel a million miles away
i don’t feel any thing at all

This song fucking owns Stinkfist. Not to say the comparison isn't valid.

From just analyzing the song itself and not really the deeper meaning, it really sounds like an all-star combination of all his major recurring themes. When I saw this and realized what all the blocks were in the singles, I just was blown away by this song. The music is exactly what it sounds like:Badass.

Trent absolutely outdid himself with this song.

For the real meaning, if this is the sequel to Year Zero(not saying it is or isn't) then I imagine Earth is very fucked after the presence caused havoc, and everyone is living in a Mad Max-esque environment.

I've really noticed this album is about submitting to whatever is controlling you, and not fighting it anymore. Trent touched on this a lot in With Teeth but it's so prevalent in The Slip...

About time... 14 years to release another good song.
(Apart from the two tracks on the end of Still if you fancied going for the whole kill yourself vibe like Hurt.).

All he's got to do now is sort out that god awful guitar tone he's got - it's too grumbly. Oh, and if he could manage to get Vrenna back involved... that might help with the drums. Not quite sure why Freese isn't producing beats like APC on here.

Fair dues tho: The Slip is the best album he's done since Downward Spiral.

No doubt I'll now be attacked by 16yo kids who are now the BIGGEST fans.

Hm...you really couldn't find ONE good song on either The Fragile, With Teeth, or Year Zero? I, for one, think that The Downward Spiral is overrated (yet still brilliant). The Fragile is probably their best album as a whole, and Year Zero is great when digesting it song by song.

But, yeah, The Slip is a very strong ten track album, although I could have done without the instrumentals. After all, Ghosts was nothing but instrumentals. This song is great, though. It's definitely the catchiest and most rock-oriented song on the album. What is it about? I don't know, the lyrics seem like typical Trent, but he's all about the delivery. Seems to be just about exactly what scarecrow826 stated. The protagonist will not cooperate. I don't know if the album is post-Year Zero in its lyrics as they don't seem to be centered around a specific central idea like Year Zero was, but it's a cool idea nonetheless.

That chorus is perhaps the catchiest thing the band has ever done.

I agree with xdvr on pretty much everything. Even about what he said about Leaving Hope.

The lyrics of this song are great, but that music is horrible. If these lyrics could be combined with something eerie and softer like whats in The Four of Us Are Dying, then you would have a great fuckin song.

Heres hoping to a remix of this song that parallels The Downward Spiral (The Bottom).

Speaking about The Downward Spiral, remember his promise from "Hurt":

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

It makes me wonder if this is him keeping good on staying 1,000,000 miles away.

i feel a million miles away
i don’t feel any thing at all

Thats a pretty big change since Hurt, and The Downward Spiral. I wonder what else had changed in Trent's message.

Yup, another example of why Nine Inch Nails should have stopped after The Fragile. Everything after has stunk soooo bloody badly, it's hard to be a fan anymore. What's Reznor doing? No wonder this was free, it's brutal. He should start trying again.

And this crap over Stinkfist? Calm down. But let's not get started on that debate.

NIN are dead.

Hey don't talk about my band like that.
He is still amazing. The Fragile was my favorite CD of his, but i think this one is equally good.

Dude, Tool is the one who hasn't released an album in almost 3 years, has no issue with ripping off their fans on ticket sales, and Maynard is one of the biggest assholes in all of rock, and a pretty irrelevant one at that.

Trent Reznor on the other hand? He's pioneering for the future of the record industry, and is still making good music at that.

this song is alright, but it's still nothing compare to they're other stuff

I agree with scarecrow826. The more I listen to this album, the more I can see the themes of the songs intertwining with certain themes from year zero.

And by the way, I believe The Fragile is his best album. And ghosts was, to me, a brilliant piece of work. If you actually take the time to stop what you are doing and actually listen to the music, you just get a better understanding of what its all about.

Hm, I think in this trent is battling with his old self (from the downward spiral) because he references the song hurt (thank you mycroft for noticing that)
and Its seems like he feels like hes slipping but throughout the song he overcomes what he used to be and with the lines

put the gun
in my mouth
close your eyes
blow my fucking brains out

and with this its just him saying he has killed his old self, and he can finaly be away from it all, but wihtout that side of him he still has lost alot of feeling...anyways thats my opinion,

And im going to have to say either Broken or The Fragile we're the best albums he made.

Mycroft good job catching that, I didn't even think of it, so far what I get out of this is the "protagonist" is angry as hell at the world and fed up entirely.

Kind of hard
Hard to see
When you crawl
On your hands and your knees
With your face
In the trough
Wait your turn
While they finish you off

Cover up your eyes long enough and you forget what it 's like to see. I think this is him dealing with life better yet still aware of how shitty everything is, you can shut everything out but after awhile someone or something from your past is bound to return.

don’t know when it started
don’t know how
should have found out
should have happened by now
got these lines
on my face
after all this time
and i still haven’t found my place

He can't remember how it got so bad before, but now it's reoccuring he's pondering on why he hasn't just ended it and is confused on why he's been lieing to himself to stay happy, yet blind. The lines on his face signify his age, as he's getting older and shit's getting bad again, he still doesn't know where he belongs.

i jump from every rooftop
so high so far to fall
i feel a million miles away
i don’t feel any thing at all

Even as high as he can get in life, and how wonderful it can be he knows once you reach the top, there's no where else to go but down. Even after so many years, and it feeling like a million miles away, once again he's back to his old thoughts and swims in them.

i wake up
on the floor
start it up again
like it matters anymore
i don’t know
if it does
is this really all
that there ever was?

Seems more like a metaphor, same as the chorus. He's back on the ground once again, and doesn't know if it's worth it to get back up, or stay down. Because once he's back up, whats to prevent him from slipping and falling again?

put the gun
in my mouth
close your eyes
blow my fucking brains out
pretty patterns
on the floor
that’s enough for you
but i still need more

Projecting his anger at the world "you" he taunts them. Knowing that killing himself is satisfaction for "you" it's still not enough for him.

---------

Hope that makes sense, great song, good album.

One image from the past comes to mind at this part:

"with your face
in the trough
wait your turn
while they finish you off"

Pigs. Piggies lined up waiting to go to slaughter. Sound familiar?

And yes, the Hurt allusion is clear: "if I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way."

So in this new song, to me it seems like he's saying that he's done just that, he kept himself and started things over a million miles away from where he once was, but now what??

The lyrics wasn't there by accident...they already were within the song file info...as nin.com specified: 'All the files come fully tagged'
Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to understand Trent's grumblings!!

if this is in fact YZ sequel, maybe in all the chaos caused by the presence and nukes and stuff (In This twilight, Zero Sum), the human race (trent's point of view) feels a million miles away from what they used to be or maybe a million miles away from god.....then everyone starts killing themselves. Biting bullets, jumping off rooftops. and also...an interesting thing i noticed was that as soon as the chorus starts something is descending or falling. maybe i'm wrong or you guys will think i am stupid...but who cares?

I love how you have ppl that r like, man i wish Trent would do drugs again so he could come up with stuff like the downward spiral. You greedy pricks. Trent pulls his life together and all u can say is i hope he ruins it again so he can write me good music. YOU, are not true fans. I'm not saying the Downward Spiral is a bad album, in fact its probly my favorite album of all time. But NIN is different unlike other bands and doesnt sound the same on every single fucking album. So naturally some ppl arent going to like it. I, respect the talent he has to make all his albums sound different, yet can see the genius he is as a musician. What it comes down to, if ur a true NIN fan, or just a NIN fan, you would respect mr. reznor for how he pulled his life together as in stopped using drugs and alcohol, not just anybody can do that. I say, good for him.

ok my thought here could be wrong but its just an idea. Well if Trent has decided to link albums together then this is where my idea comes from. If you listen to Year Zero then the Slip and then TDS, well there stories all seem to go together. Like in Year Zero the world is ending and everything is wrong and in The Slip, the main charecter starts TDS, and then we all know what TDS is about. But like jsut the album names go together also. Its just an idea, but i could be on the right track.

Thanks saruz.
ash, the 1,000,000 is right at the end of the song.

Acs111 is right, this album is definitely about a journey. Trent "traveled" the million miles away, whether it be actual distance or of "mental distance". He is disappointed in where ended up
"is this really all that it ever was"
and he is numb
"i don’t feel any thing at all "

But waking up on a floor and wanting to blow your brains out is called depression. But he wants to making pretty patterns on the wall from his blood splatter isn't enough for him, he wants more more more. So even though he's fought and beaten drug addicting, he still has a void inside of him , which later he tried to fill with "Discipline", and notices how his voice "just echos off these walls". Folks, he's returning to a mental state he didn't want to go back to. Or maybe its something he never escaped...
