Lyrics for Your Protector as interpreted by redtree

Your Protector Lyrics
She left a week to roam
Your protector's coming home
Keep your secrets with you, girl
Safe from the outside world

You walk along the stream
Your head caught in a waking dream
Your protector's coming home (coming home)

As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning the shootin' came
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me

You run with the devil

Tell your brother to be good
Tell your sister not to go
Tell your mother not to wait
Tell your father I was good

As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning the shootin' came
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me

Actually the lyrics are "As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning the Jews came"

The artist is sympathetic to the plights of the Palestinians, who are trying to stop the expansion of the modern state of Israel. I'm right and you're wrong.

It's incredible how they, by Fleet Foxes standards, rock out on this song, but still maintain a soothing, tranquil sound. As for the meaning or the song, it seems to me to be about a girl leaving her home and family to go out and experience the world for the first time, meeting a more experienced boy along the way, only to be disillusioned and hurt by the harsh realities revealed to her and eventually killed by them.

Why would he say "tonight...on the morning?" That's contradictory. It definitely sounds like he's saying "to die."

LyricWiki says:

"She left a week to roam,
Your protector's coming home.
Keep your secrets with you girl,
safe from the outside world.

You walk along the stream,
Your head caught in a waking dream,
Your protector's coming home, coming home.

As you lay to die beside me, baby,
On the morning that you came.
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me.

As you lay to die beside me, baby,
On the morning that you came.
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me.

You run with the devil.
You run with the devil.

Tell your brother to be good,
Tell your sister not to go,
Tell your mother not to wait,
Tell your father I was good.

As you lay to die beside me, baby,
On the morning that you came.
Would you wait for me?
The other one would wait for me."

...and I agree.

I'm such a nong.

I always thought he was saying 'when you came' not 'when the shooting came'.

Not to worry, I just wasn't listening that hard. This is such a beautiful song. One of my favourites by Fleet Foxes.

Look, I really do agree with you guys saying "on the morning that you came", however, I think the "lay to die" has more relevance when its left how it is.... Maybe the "other one" is the feeling of doubt as in like the one before him/her would have waited instead of leaving without her..?

its a really well constructed song though... and although some of their lyric is dark its compensated by the angelic harmonies and up beat melody. Its quite an amazing combinations.

It's a song about a resistance fighter, told from the viewpoint of his lover who has a premonition of his death.

The girl and her family are living under an occupation but are sympathetic to the resistance- hence the need to "keep your secrets with you...safe from the outside world" and "you run with the devil." In the dream, she is there with him when he is killed. The resistance fighter tells her what she needs to tell her various family members: "tell your sister not to go (looking for me)," "tell your mother not to wait (for me)," "tell your father I was good."

She's gone to look for him "she left a week to roam." The resistance fighter is coming home to her as a dream since he can't come back physically and telling her to go home.

Okay I'm positive the chorus really goes:

As you lay to die beside me, baby
On the morning the shootin' came
Would you wait for me
The other one wait for me

It just makes sense, the "morning shootin' came" hence why they are dying.

I would bet anything that's how it goes. What a beautiful song.

I think this song and tiger mountain peasant song make a least some reference to drug addiction. Devils, deamons, roaming in a waking dream, premonitions of my death etc all sound to me like descriptions of a person caught in the grip of drugs and feeling close to death.

Such a beautiful song by such a lovely band. I don't know about favourite songs but this one really captured my attention.

Also not relating to this song, but to the band in general, I love the end of the description on the album:
Music is a weird and cosmic thing, its own strange religion for nonbelievers, and what a joy it is to make, in any form.

I'm going to agree with Neonnoodle --

Keep your secrets with you, girl
Safe from the outside world

girl/world are quiet and deep, but they're definitely there.

Gorgeous song, haunting, and I can't stop listening to it!

I'm pretty sure it's not:

As you lay tonight....
On the morning....

As that makes no sense. Whoever submitted these lyrics needs a q-tip.

I think it's supposed to be

As you lay tonight beside me
On the morning that you came
Would you wait for me
The other one
Would wait for me

It's such a beautiful song, my favourite Fleet Foxes song.
