Lyrics for Violet Hill as interpreted by crumbs

Violet Hill Lyrics
Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And a fog became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft

Bury me in honor
When I’m dead and hit the ground
My nerves are poles that unfroze

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow far below

If you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?

Oh and there are a few mistakes in these lyrics.

I think it's about someone who is telling a loved one (maybe his girl or even his child) how the world works, injustice, politics, religion, etc. and as this person loves this girl/child/whoever he is warning him/her (that's what i get from the ''if you love me won't you let me know'' part, is kind of a rhetoric question).
This is my interpr, and surely its wrong or too general, probably it has a more specific meaning.

i agree with awakening, and i'm really happy with this song. i feared they were too changed, even down to their album art, but i feel the coldplayesque vein throughout. it's just grittier.

I want to be a soldier
The captain of some sinking ship with snow
Far below

I'm pretty sure it's: I don't want to be a soldier.

Fucking amazing song, been waiting for new coldplay for a while.

I believe its about the concept of information and how it affects the people, for example, the more they know, the more they become aware of the problems and such, but eventually it becomes a problem, information can be very tricky and this song is about that, how a son asks his father about the world and the father explains to him how the world works, the chorus:

"if you love, won't you let me know".

That's the son talking, "why won't you let me know?", "the world is a horrible place son, you are better off not knowing some stuff", so yeah, the father is telling his story and the son just wants to know more and more, but the father knows what information can do to people, because it happened to him.

A couple of corrections:
"Bury me in honor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds"

and
"I want to be a soldier
The captain of some sinking ship with snow
Far below

If you love me
why'd you let me go?"

And, I think he says
"when the banks became cathedrals" instead of "when the banks became diseased."

I think the rest of the album drops in June. I simply cannot wait.

I have a feeling the song is essentially about politics, war, and religious hypocrisy, from a soldier's point of view. It could be referring to the war in Iraq, or any other war--past, present, or future.

He's talking about politics and how we are controlled by our governments. "When the future's architectured/ by a carnival of idiots on show."

He's talking about an increasingly "religious" society, "when the banks became cathedrals/ and the fog became God" and its apparent hypocrisy (supporting the killing of others to aid their own cause) "priests clutched onto bibles/ and went out to fit their rifles."

And he's talking about soldiers that feel as though they're being used for a cause they may not believe in "I don't want to be a soldier/ with the captain of some sinking ship."

"If you love me/ won't you let me know" is referring to sending the soldiers out to get killed.

I hear the line as "I don't want to be a soldier/who the captain of some sinking ship would stow/far below". It just makes more sense to me - A captain stowing a soldier far below in the depths of a ship that is sinking would be condemning him to drown. This seems to fits with the idea in the "carnival of idiots" line, of being under incompetent or selfish leadership that can't be trusted - that "when the future's architectured/by a carnival of idiots on show/you better lie low." The song seems to tell the story of a time when the people have reason to fear those who are supposed to be leading them, but are misguided, corrupt or untrustworthy. I think the album cover art also influences me to see this song as having a political message. However, I'm not sure how I think the "if you love me, won't you let me know" line fits into that idea of the song.

it's "my love..." not "the love.."
the last two lines are in the first person so it would make sense for him to sing 'my'

Lyrics, via coldplaying.com , a very reputable coldplay source:

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below

When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God

Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft
Bury me in honor
When I’m dead and hit the ground
My Love is opposed when unfold

If you love me
Won't you let me know?

I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below

If you love me
Why'd you let me go?

I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still

So if you love me
Won't you let me know?

If you love me,
Won't you let me know?

Anyway, I was afraid that Coldplay would stray far too the left with their new album. However, I still feel that Coldplay from before in there.

I love it. I even love the addition of a guitar solo in there.

The song I think is about possible someone who is getting older and possibly dying. They want to give their last requests. He wants her to tell him that she loves him.

Either that who he is telling her of an apocalypse coming and wants his last requests fulfilled.

I love the new sound and I'm very much looking forward to the new album.

As for the songs' meaning, I think, at least in part given the climate of the times, it's a political commentary:

"When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low"

That being said, whether or not they're pro or anti this statement is yet to be seen seeing as Coldplay, like U2 etc are reasonably politically active.

for sure the song is predominated by a sense of desolation as it was "a long and dark december". probably he's disenchanted with the politics and religious and tries to find comfort from his love?

while the future of our generation is ruled by the idiots and the world is so chaotic like a carnival, religious, which is to promote peace and universal love, doesnt help a bit in reality. priests simply clutch to the theories in bibles, but doing nothing practical. the cross is way too aloft to match with the modern world.

i guess he is kinda fear of the future as fog can be interpreted as uncertainties in life. the line about he doesnt want to be a soldier reveals that he is scared by all these harsh scenes going on in every part of the world. about he's relationship with his love, its kinda reserve as well. the woman doesnt express much of her love to him explicitly, but rather just stay silent. and thats why he wish to feel some warmth from her, in face of the cold and cruel exterior, which is symbolized by the dark and snowy december.

by the way, what's the meaning of Violet Hill?

to be perfectly honest i believe that this song is very directly tied to what the band sees as the injustices that exist throughout the world and the song itself is being sung from almost the perspective of the earth looking down on what we as humans have created...
examples:
"When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show" - a reference perhaps to our reliance on the media to provide truth when in reality it dictates our actions to act out of fear...
"When the banks became cathedrals"- pretty obviously we have come to worship money
"And the fog
Became God"- fog is something we are trying to always look past.. not something we look at... perhaps an inference that we are not looking at god anymore but rather trying to see past
"Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft
Bury me in honor
When I’m dead and hit the ground
My Love is opposed when unfold"-i believe another reference to how we should be looking deeper into everything around us... the bible/rifiles line is a direct shot at how ALL people are using religious views for moral justification for war while the "love" which religions truly propose is a love of all people regardless of their religion... i believe he is say bury me with the ideals of love despite that fact that in death people may alter what we may have stood for while we lived
"If you love me
Why'd you let me go?"- the world speaking to us as humans... asking us what are we doing by our actions if we allowing for issues such as absolute poverty, climate change, religious persecution to exist... man made problems the "earth" speaking in this circumstance and is questioning us on how we could allow for this to go on...
"I don't want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below"- soldiers are often associated with being the first and last line of defense... in this circumstance it is a reference to the fact that he doesn't want to be one of the last people watching the destruction of the world and the snow... i believe is not actual snow but nuclear snow as a result of a perhaps nuclear holocaust....
"So if you love me
Won't you let me know?
If you love me,
Won't you let me know?"- again chris asks as the "earth" if you love me... act and show me that you love me

pretty strait forward when you consider who is doing the speaking and how this is almost a dialogue between "earth" and concerned person sitting at "violet hill" discussing how this all came to happen... "Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow
Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below"- frozen in place (

con't... a reference to our own death... yet at the same time it shows how this is a person looking at the creation of absolute destruction and remember he beginning of the end.... pretty well written... its gorgeous... its a pretty emotional song... typical coldplay...i love it... god bless be safe... and i hope to hear what everyone thinks of my interpretation...

I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still- wow the most obvious line and i left it out... "she was silent still" --- mother earth is no longer speaking... the earth is dead perhaps... i don't know perhaps... let me know what you guys think

I think he says:
"Bury me in honor
when I'm dead and hit the ground
my nerves are porous, and unfold."

instead of:
"My Love is opposed when unfold"

And I think it is:
"I don't wanna be a soldier
with the captain of some sinking ship
which stow far below."

instead of:
"With snow, far below"

This is what I think the whole song is about:

Timeline of Afghanistan (December 2001)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monday, December 3, 2001
News reports state that Australian, British, French, German and Russian special forces are on the ground in Afghanistan in addition to U.S. special forces and marines.

Regarding the snow, this is what happened in Afghanistan, on december 4th 2001:

First snow warns of humanitarian disaster

Aid hampered by weather, bandits and infighting

Tuesday December 4 2001

The first heavy snowfalls of what looks like becoming a very cruel winter blanketed northern Afghanistan yesterday, imperilling the lives of hundreds of thousands of people at risk from cold, hunger and inadequate shelter and raising fears of an impending humanitarian emergency.

Here are the links:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_War_in_Afghanistan_%28December_2001%29

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/dec/04/afghanistan.iantraynor

The rest of the song is mainly a social critics. As we all know, the US are becoming more and more religious and the line between religion/state are becoming thinner. The purpose of churches now is to make profit, and banks are becoming places of worship, that means that MONEY is becoming what we all believe in: The Oil War (Iraq War), and etc.

Yes, I think it's something like a soldier that is realizing what's happening and has a "wake up call", asking his family (father, girlfriend, etc) to help him out.

Dont remember the painting on the cover of this single (or album?). It's Eugene Delacroix’s 1830 painting Liberty Leading the People.

This is a political song.

According to wikipedia, Violet Hill is an area of Hong Kong where hostilities took place during WWII. So I'll go ahead and say that everyone's right, it's most likely a politically charged song, and most likely is referring to this place.
