Death is her boyfriend
She spits on summers and smiles to the night
She collects crowns made of black roses
But her heart is made of bubble gum

Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl

Dark rags and red stars
She's the dirty witch of her high school
She worships Satan like a father
But dreams of a sister like Molly Ringwald

Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl

"I'm gonna jump the walls and run
I wonder if they'll miss me?
I won't miss them
The cemetery is my home
I want to be a part of it
Invisible even to the night
Then I'll read poetry to the stones
Maybe one day I could be one of them...
Wise and silent
Waiting for someone to love me
Waiting for someone to kiss me
I'm fifteen years old
And I feel it's already too late to live
Don't you?"

Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl
Graveyard girl

My Interpretation:I used to think the lyrics for the song were pretentious too, as well as melodramatic. I still loved it, just never really got hooked by the lyrics. After reading the comments though, I also think it's supposed to come off as pretentious and melodramatic... just the way a girl such as the one described in the lyrics is supposed to be. Well played, M83!

General Comment:They nailed the lyrics perfectly for how a lot of high school girls feel.

General Comment:i love how the 80s-esque instrumentation of this song adds to the theme of the archetypal goth girl of the 80s, and the entire genre of pop culture of the 80s in general.

General Comment:Love the album. Beautiful atmospherics. Although the lyrics border on pretentious at times, M83 strike the right balance on this record... except for the stupid monologue on this song. I can only reassure myself with the thought that it's almost certainly tongue-in-cheek. This doesn't make it sound any less idiotic. The lyrics are about the worst perversion of the goth subculture, but the music evokes everything that made 80s goth phenomenal. What a horrible conflict of interest.

(p.s. before anyone attacks my comment: yes, i understand the intentional irony of this song's juxtaposition. i'm merely expressing my view that the lyrics come close to ruining the mood of the song. it's hard to take such beautiful and gothic atmospheres seriously when the lyrics clearly don't)

General Comment:This song is amazing until the monologue, which is ridiculous.

General Comment:I guess to truly understand it you'd either have to be the dude in love with the angsty rebel chick, or you'd have to be the angsty rebel chick.
