When I was young, lying in the grass
I felt so safe in a warming bath
Of sunlight
Of sunlight.

Vast open sky
Could do no harm
Like an embrace
From mother's arms
In sunlight
In sunlight.

In sunlight
In sunlight.

With every year that came to pass
More clouds appear until the sky went black
And there was
No sunlight,
No sunlight.
And there was
No sunlight,
No sunlight anymore.

You disappeared at the same speed
The idealistic things I believed
The optimist died inside of me
No sunlight,
No sunlight.

No sunlight,
No sunlight.

You disappeared with the same speed
The idealistic thing I believed
The optimist died inside of me
No sunlight,
No sunlight.

No sunlight,
No sunlight.

No sunlight,
No sunlight,
No sunlight,
No sunlight anymore.

Song Meaning:Here's my next entry on Narrow Stairs as a concept album.

This song is strange. It's probably the happiest sounding on the album, but is one of the most depressing points in the story. This is where our character becomes completely crushed by his "love" that was mentioned in I Will Possess Your Heart. This girl totally pulverized his heart, and now he feels as if there's no sunlight in his world. The idea of there being no sunlight is a metaphor for depression. He sinks into a depression from being totally rejected. As time goes on, things get worse for him, and he feels like he'll never get out of it.

See the next song for more on the story.

General Comment:Innocence in childhood so there was still positivity and being conveniently naive with the world, and there was still "sunlight"..
but as time goes by, he begins to mature and to see the reality of the world, of what people do to each other and how cruel society could be..so "no sunlight" pertains to no chance or defeated by the truth..

General Comment:This song sounds so much like a standard pop song, but once you read the lyrics, it changes your views of it immensely. Pretty depressing.

General Comment:How optimistic is this song!! It's got a fast rhythm which I love....but like other listeners, I think it's about growing from a boy into a man and the challenges faced.

General Comment:"I was a young boy that had big plans..."

The shedding of innocence. A common tale. But this album flows so well, it's better than that. The way it leads right into Cath... is quite brilliant (a young girl that had big plans).

Usually, I rearrange the tracks on every album I buy, but this one is perfect as is. Tracks 5 & 11 could be stronger as valley & outro respectively, but overall this is the best I've heard all year.

General Comment:Ahhh oh my God!! I love this song...
I bought this album about 2 weeks ago, its so awesome. (Not as good as Transatlanticism, but still very good... A step up from Plans)

I agree with what everyone else has pretty much said. As you grow older, you lose your optimism. You're so naive as a child so for most part, you're happy, despite everything. Then as you get older, you get sadder... Because you know more. About everything.

    A sad fact of life.

This song is sung and played so beautifully, even though it's so sad. I hope Ben Gibbard and the rest of Death Cab know how truly special they are...

General Comment:Maybe a part of us always wants to be optimistic - like the hopeful, melodic, upbeat tempo of this song. But another part of us can't help but feel discouraged. I love the contrast between the music and lyrics - like the contrast we feel between wanting to be optimistic but being a pessimist. This verse describes it perfectly:

It disappeared at the same speed
as the idealistic things I believed.
The optimist died inside of me.
