  General Comment:it totally sounds like he's thinking about how she feels and he's afraid of how she'll react. and the part "i never thought that i had any more to give, you're pushing me so far here i am without you" he's saying that even though he doesn't have give anything of value he still needs her and wants to protect her.

  My Opinion:"truth is I am done pretending"...now I finally know what this song is really about. News is out, he did in fact admit he had a 5 year sexual relationship with a man named Marilyn. Never saw that coming.

  Song Meaning:Love Remains the Same - Gavin Rossdale
  
  I would like to qualify that a great song is always a song that can mean a number of things and emotions to different listeners. This a great song for that very reason! My 2 cents is below, but I must say I do not think there is a right answer when it comes to meaning.....just this (perspective + wonderful lyrics = great song!)
  
  
  With that said.....To me, the over-view of this song is (A Dear John or Johnnie Letter "Song") about ending a relationship with a partner who has an Alcohol problem and although the singer still loves that person and always will, is simply done pretending everything can be fixed. It is no longer alright, as the failures (and maybe recoveries as well) are too often and that pact leads to the truth that that person will not change, so the relationship must change....Goodbye relationship, because it is too painful to go on, the pain of realizing that the importance of the relationship was not shared if the relationship was always in second place to the addiction, so good bye, but The Love Remains the Same!

  General Comment:To me this relates to my life. My boyfriend of one year and half broke up with me because of my mother. She hated that we were together. We didn't want ro break up but the stress of sneaking around and not being able to see each other was really hard on us. So the part where he says "Half the time the world is ending, truth is I'm done pretending.to much time to long defending. Truth is you and I are dome pretending." it's like we were fighting with my mom so much to accept things and we were tricking our selves that things were going to get better..   General Comment:I thought I heard him in an interview saying this song was about the day after a break up where usually if you were still in the relationship you'll be doing something with your significant other, but instead you're doing everything alone (eating breakfast, taking a walk, etc.) I'm really not sure where I heard that from, but that always sticks with me when I hear this song. And after a recent break up with my boyfriend of 5 years, I can really relate to this song.
