I regarded the world as such a sad sight
Until I viewed it in black and white
Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape
Don?t refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don?t remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we?ll unravel the mystery
Farewell all my friends in textbooks, ?cuz I?m going home
?Cuz my blood cells cannot depend on the weather in photographs
There?s a light show out my window, somewhere way up there
Dear Vienna, are you singing?
Dear Vienna, are you swinging?
Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away
I regarded the world as such a sad sight
Until I viewed it in black and white
Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape
Don?t refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don?t remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we?ll unravel the mystery
I was so far out of place
Watching those stars in outer space
'cause I am so far from where you are
There?s a light show out my window, somewhere way up there
Dear Vienna, are you singing?
Dear Vienna, are you swinging?
Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away
Until I viewed it in black and white
Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape
Don?t refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don?t remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we?ll unravel the mystery
Farewell all my friends in textbooks, ?cuz I?m going home
?Cuz my blood cells cannot depend on the weather in photographs
There?s a light show out my window, somewhere way up there
Dear Vienna, are you singing?
Dear Vienna, are you swinging?
Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away
I regarded the world as such a sad sight
Until I viewed it in black and white
Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape
Don?t refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don?t remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we?ll unravel the mystery
I was so far out of place
Watching those stars in outer space
'cause I am so far from where you are
There?s a light show out my window, somewhere way up there
Dear Vienna, are you singing?
Dear Vienna, are you swinging?
Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away

"I regarded the world as such a sad sight
Until I viewed it in black and white
Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape"
At first Adam is depressed, he wants to die. But then he examines life as a whole, and realized that suicide is not an answer to your problems ("And sealed the exits with caution tape").
"Don't refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don't remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we'll unravel the mystery"
Now he's talking to someone else (Vienna). He doesn't want her to focus on all the negatives. The things she can't see are the "positives."
"Farewell, all my friends in textbooks
I'm going home
'Cause my blood cells cannot depend
On the weather in photographs"
Adam is saying he isn't going to join "his friends in textbooks" by dying. His bloods cells = emotions (or body in general). His emotions shouldn't be affected by something physical (the weather).
"There's a light show out my window
Somewhere way up there"
Behind all the evil in world there is still an underlying joy.
"Dear Vienna, are you singing?
Dear Vienna, are you swinging?"
He's asking Vienna something... either if she's still happy, or still alive.
"Dear Vienna, we were happy
Like the shades of May
When we got carried away
I was so far out of place
Watching those stars in outer space
'Cause I am so far from where you are"
These lines hint how they got their depression. Perhaps they broke up or Vienna died.
Overall, it's about something happening to this "couple." Both of them then spiral into depression because they are not with each other, but then one overcomes it and then sends a message to the other telling her how to overcome it also.
"i regarded the world in such a sad sight till i reviewed it in black and white
then i reviewed every frame in basic shape and sealed the exits with caution tape"
---he went to the museum and never wants it to happen again
"dont refocus your eyes in the darkness and dont remember this place unless
i describe all the things that you cannot see and we'll unravel the mystery"
---talking to the survivors, dont think about it and think about how happy you are that its over
"farewell all my friends in textbooks im going home"
---goodbye to loved ones whose names will be written in textbooks
"cuz my blood cells cannot depend on the weather in photographs"
---you cant determine what will happen to me from what you read
"theres a light show out my window somewhere way up there"
---he is seeing hoorrible things happen
"dear vienna we were happy like the shades of may when we got carried away"
-vienna is actually a town in like germany or someplace i saw on a map of the holocaust. and they were happy when they were carried away
if i were to right a song about the holocaust i would word it just like this cuz me and adam have like the same writing style
"Farewell, all my friends in textbooks, I'm going home
'Cause my blood cells cannot depend on the weather in photographs"
To me, this part of the song talks about how someone is living in a dream\story\fantasy (or even just the past) and decides to move on because they realize that they are wasting their life in a dream\story when there are things waiting for them in real life, "There's a light show out my window, somewhere way up there".
And again with this part:
"I was so far out of place watching those stars in outer space,
'Cause I am so far from where you are
There's a light show out my window, somewhere way up there"
They realize how 'out of place' they were by focusing on the stars in the story\dream\fantasy\etc. when they have a 'light show' of stars waiting for them outside their window.
That was just my personal interpretation. I also wonder if he is talking about Vienna the city. That would definetly make sense to me too. Like I said these lyrics can be interperted is so many different ways and none of them are wrong. :)
"I regarded the world as such a sad sight
Until I viewed it in black and white"
The world is a miserable and terrible place. But when you view the world in black and white, you realize that it's a place filled with BOTH good and bad things, and you have to take the bad with the good.
"Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape"
Thinking about all of the good and simple things, and breaking down everything and taking it away from it's evil nature, they "seals the exits"-- walks away from the idea of suicide, which is the final exit.
"Don't refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don't remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we'll unravel the mystery"
Here, he is telling someone to never look back into that dark time in their life. Then he will be able to explain to them all of the wonderful things this world has to offer.
"Farewell, all my friends in textbooks, I'm going home
Cuz my blood cells cannot depend on the weather in photographs"
His mood will no longer depend on the things he sees, no matter how bad they are, because it's his life.
"There's a light show out my window somewhere way up there
Dear Vienna, are you singing?
Dear Vienna, are you swinging?
Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away"
The light show is the stars, which Adam often seems to relate to hope. So he's saying that there is hope. Then, I think he's talking to another person about all of the wonderful times they've had together after they got through the dark times.
"I was so far out of place
Watching those stars in outer space
Cuz I am so far from where you are
There's a light show out my window somewhere way up there
Dear Vienna, are you breathing?
Dear Vienna, are you dreaming?
Dear Vienna, we were happy like the shades of May when we got carried away"
When you fight a difficult battle with someone, you form a deep bond within your souls. So whenever you're without them, it can be sad, but you know that they're alive and safe, which is so much better than them being gone from this world.
except i thought it was depression, more specifically from the loss of a loved one, vienna.
when he is talking to her, he is wondering what she is doing in heaven (singing, swinging)
I feel alot of things in this song. So, HERE WE GO!
"I regarded this world as such a sad site, until i viewed it in black and white"
Believe it or not, that makes me think of reading. It makes me think of how boring things can get, but how exiting reading or writing a story can be. I really like stories. This whole song makes me think of that. owo
Somebody is writing to his ex-girlfriend, who left him because he became too much of a burden. He's telling her a story of how he changed his life and trying to convince her to come back.
"I regarded the world as such a sad sight"
He doesn't appreciate life at all. He stays in his room all day, harms himself and considers suicide seriously because of temporary problems.
"Until I viewed it in black and white"
This is where the 'somebody' changes. He sees from another, worse off person's point of view and realizes that his life could be much worse than it is.
"Then I reviewed every frame and basic shape
And sealed the exits with caution tape"
So the somebody changes dramatically. He does things he always wanted to do, tries new things and lives his life to the fullest. He also makes sure he will never become the way he was.
"Don't refocus your eyes in the darkness
And don't remember this place unless
I describe all the things that you cannot see
And we'll unravel the mystery"
I feel like this is 'Vienna' writing back. She's telling him to do fun things, but also learn to relax, and to not abandon his former self(before the depression and stuff), and when the other guy denies it, she shows him pictures of wodnerful things they used to do before she broke up with him(unraveling the mystery). So he promses to change and gets back with 'Vienna'.
The next few lines might describe how 'Vienna' feels like it still isn't the same as before so she decides to break up with him again and says that she needs to move on to better things that she always wanted to do, and tries to break it off. But the guy is still calling her over and over again. Then he realizes how out of place he was by thinking she still would love him, so he moves on and does his own thing. and now knows that he doesn't need her to be happy, but they still stay in touch, writing letters once in a while.
