Kim and Jessie
They have a secret world
In the twilight
Kids of the woods
They are crazy about romance and illusions

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Dream dressed in blue
It's all they need for now and forever
Dazed by the moon
They shatter their heartbeats
With singing

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

They need to drown out out all the voices
They pass a bottle like it is water
And soon they'll be flying
They are gods, they are lightning!

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Somebody lurks in the shadows
Somebody whispers
Somebody lurks in the shadows
Yeah, yeah, yeah

My Interpretation:It's about a couple of teenage girls going into the woods to get drunk. The only relatively deep part is the chorus, which personifies ("somebody") the problems that wait for them when they come back out into reality. Like, they can go into this secret world, but the real world always lurks in the shadows.
The video really has nothing to do with the meaning of the song, so you can't really look at it that way.

General Comment:I liked this song virtually from the moment I heard it. It has such a great textured sound, it captures the essence of an 80s soundtrack without any cheesiness. When I read the lyrics I thought it had something to do with drugs, a song about 2 girls who go to the woods and escape into a fantasy world of their making. The 'somebody lurks in the shadows' part adds tension, it could be a voyeur who watches them or it could be the reality that they seek escape from. I thought there could have been a romance between the titular characters, which is fine by me I got nothing against lesbians. But also that would give the somebody in the shadows part more weight.

General Comment:i think this song is about two teenagers and their "secret world" which is their illusioned love..like many teenagers have. infatuation. this is the illusioned love that many teenagers have which they think will last forever..which is why the song says "its all they need for now and forever"...this is the sad reality of many young loves. their love grows when they are drunk or on drugs "they pass a bottle like it is water"....and finally this "somebody that lurks in the shadows" is the truth about their love. its infatuation. which is lust. soon that person that lurks in the shadows will come out and end their love. which means they will break up.

    thats my opinion.

m83 is by far my favorite band.

i have a band of my own based on them.

My Interpretation:I don't know about love, but I thought that it was about two kids building their own fantasy world trying to escape the real world. The 'somebody' that is lurking in the shadows is the darkness of reality that they're running away from with the help of drinks.

General Comment:I get that he directly said it was about a drug experience, but I still insist on seeing it as a twisted love song.
I definitely agree with the idea of "somebody lurks in shadows" as a symbol for reality, that will eventually get in the way of the illusional love.

I still like to think it worked out though, I'm like that.

General Comment:Better lyrics without the insight about the drugs...the "somebody lurks in the shadows" is more mysterious without knowing it's about people doing something that's actually forbidden.

I do still think it's a love song though. I see the reference about passing a bottle, of course, but the line "crazy about romance and illusion" seems to direct the meaning more toward most people's interpretation, which is that it's a love song.
