Lyrics for A Beautiful Mess as interpreted by Apollo231

A Beautiful Mess Lyrics
You’ve got the best of both worlds
You’re the kind of girl who can take down a man,
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you’re needy,
Humble but you’re greedy
Based on your body language,
your shouted cursive I’ve been reading
You’re style is quite selective,
though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests
that this is just what happiness is

Hey, what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you can call it fiction
‘Cause I like being submerged in your contradictions dear
‘Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they’re quick
And probably have to do with your insecurities
There’s no shame in being crazy,
Depending on how you take these
Words that paraphrasing this relationship we’re staging

And it’s a beautiful mess, yes it is
It’s like, we are picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
And the kind and courteous is a life I’ve heard
But it’s nice to say that we played in the dirt
Cause here, here we are, Here we are
Here we are x7

We're still here

And what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

And through timeless words in priceless pictures
We’ll fly like birds not of this earth
And tides they turn and hearts disfigure
But that’s no concern when we’re wounded together
And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts
But it’s nice today, oh the wait was so worth it

This is a great song from his new EP, the lyrics I found online didn't do justice to the lyrics so I decided to write it down myself, I really can't wait for the full CD to come out

I love those lines. And I like his slower style, his words still flow like no one else I know.

I really don't understand what he means by "It’s like picking up trash in dresses."

Can someone explain it to me?
I am really bad at analyzing/understanding stuff like that. :/ lol

xyfa, I think it's just another way of saying it's a beautiful mess.

Like... the trash equals the mess and the dresses equal the beautiful part.

At least, that's what I got from it.

this song is amazing. hands down.

as for picking up trash in dresses....
i see it as what they have is so beautiful and elegant like the dresses.. but theres something haunting theyre relationship and standing in the way of it being perfect like trash.

also i feel like hes saying he tries so hard and treats her amazingly (dresses) but she doesnt want it or accept it (trash).

this could make sense with the....

"Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you can call it fiction"

part.... like she plays him saying she wants all this and then when he pours his heart out into it she uses it against him or just shuts him down completely.

Definately a favorite. When I hear it it sounds to me as though he is not illustrating a female who is intentially hurting him. There are a variety of mental illnesses that create in one person a beauty that you wont find elsewhere, but with that also comes some ugly (mess). That's just what I hear. I am bipolar and I swing between wondering how my husband got so lucky to have me and then how can he stand me :-) This is how I hear the song...

Great stuff!

i love this song. it's definitely "shoddy cursive" and not shouted..which in fact makes zero sense. :)

I think this song is about a girl that is insecure, a bit crazy and a guy singing to her about her. He is patient, positive, stronger etc. After all the insecurities, arguments, and mess they have to go through they finally get to a point in the relationship when it is as beautiful as it should be and it was all worth the wait to get to that point.

whoa....deep.

I just love his voice. It is so smooth and silky, live, recorded, whatever. Particularly on this song.

heard somewhere where jason mraz said this song is about loving someone, for everything they are - the good and bad - and just embracing them. amazing song anyways!

"trash in dresses" could refer to girls who look pretty, but are really just trashy and whores. Probably not, but I kinda like thinking of it that way. Also would fit with the whole idea of a beautiful mess

well my friend sent this to me, because interpreted "picking up trash in dresses" completely different.. she though more along the lines of what happens to me.. I'll be dressed up and all beautiful, but the only guys I can pick up is trash.. bad, immature, trashy guys... so taking that view point, I want this song to be about me. "the wait was so worth it" OH how that kills me! I love it!

"It's like we're picking up trash in dresses..."

This is one of those songs that makes me feel like I'm turing inside out when I listen to it because it is so freaking beautiful that I can't even stand it. Literally, I love this song so much that I can't even listen to it. Jason's music is so personal....he gets the music right, he gets the lyrics right, and he captures the most complex things about life and wraps them up into simple truths. "A beautiful mess" -- that is exactly what our lives are. This song, "Love for a Child", and "Life Is Beautiful" are songs I listen to when I need help grasping the big picture and all of these feelings and emotions I can't quite describe....his music actually brings quality of life to me.

One of the most profound things in life and writing is oxymorons/paradoxes. Mraz knows this, that is why his lyrics just haunt you long after the song is over (and as I have read in the previous comments)the feeling derived from them is inexpressible. It is about finding the beauty in light and dark, yin and yang, right and wrong. Mraz indeed has life and love figured out...and expresses it in one of the most beautiful outlets. He is indeed a true artist.

'Based on your body language,
your shotty cursive I've been reading'

It makes perfect sense. It's a play on words, like he is trying to read what she ISNT saying. Shotty means 'of poor quality' so he is literally trying to 'figure her out'. It's sewn together beautifully...with the visual of literally reading cursive writing, but something more intangible like body language.

hes saying that he is in love with her and he is just describing her, how she is, her nature, shes strong but needy, humble but greedy, he is just describing a lover, how frustrating they are, how they contradict themselves, but he wouldnt have it any other way.

Well...first off, this song is beautiful regardless of meaning. And I think it can be interpreted in many ways.

However, to me...well, lets just say that basically I'm completely in love with a guy who can't seem to choose between me and this other girl. And I sort of feel like my situation relates to this song. Like for example, 'it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write kind of turn themselves into knives'. To me, that is true because he says its me he wants, and then his words become meaningless when he goes off with her. And 'I like being submerged in your contradictions'. Well basically, because I love him so much, I'll put up with him always contradicting himself and changing his mind. And of course he does 'have the best of both worlds'. And overall...my situation is a beautiful mess, because it really is a mess, but I love him so much. At the end, it says 'the wait was so worth it'...maybe implying that all of the mucking around will be worth it in the end? Who knows.

I'm sure it probably isn't about this atall, but its how I choose to see it, because I like to relate to songs. Just an idea.

Tinysplatty -
completely agree with you.
I think this song references a triangle, 2 girls, 1 guy. But of course can be interpreted the other way around too. There is a couple, in a committed relationship, and the girl has the "best of both worlds" -- the security of the commitment, but the emotional connection/love with the "other". Always ends up a painful situation for all involved.
