You've got the best of both worlds
You're the kind of girl who can take down a man,
And lift him back up again
You are strong but you're needy,
Humble but you're greedy
Based on your body language,
your shouted cursive I've been reading
You're style is quite selective,
though your mind is rather reckless
Well I guess it just suggests
that this is just what happiness is

[Chorus]
Hey, what a beautiful mess this is
It's like picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write
Kind of turn themselves into knives
And don't mind my nerve you can call it fiction
Cause I like being submerged in your contradictions dear
Cause here we are, here we are

Although you were biased I love your advice
Your comebacks they're quick
And probably have to do with your insecurities
There's no shame in being crazy,
Depending on how you take these
Words that paraphrasing this relationship we're staging

[Chorus]
And it's a beautiful mess, yes it is
It's like, we are picking up trash in dresses

Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you say
Kind of turn themselves into blades
And the kind and courteous is a life I've heard
But it's nice to say that we played in the dirt
Cause here, here we are, Here we are

[x7]
Here we are

We're still here

[Chorus]
And what a beautiful mess this is
It's like taking a guess when the only answer is yes

And through timeless words in priceless pictures
We'll fly like birds not of this earth
And tides they turn and hearts disfigure
But that's no concern when we're wounded together
And we tore our dresses and stained our shirts
But it's nice today, oh the wait was so worth it

General Comment:To me this song about being close (or in a relationship) with someone who has a mental disorder or even committed suicide.... the ups and downs of it. The good days and the bad. It mention the harm it does to the person does to themself and others. And how if you support them and help them push through it, you will make it.. On the other hand, if the person has committed suicide it talks about how you could see it coming, and eventually you will end up back together because you still love the person no matter what. 'We will fly like birds, not of this earth." "Here we are, we're still here." "Oh the wait, was so worth it."

Memory:This song has become pretty personal to me. I like to use my memories connected to the song to interpret its meaning. It wasn't until I started dating my boyfriend that I realised how important this song really was, and I must have heard it a hundred times before then.

I'm not very good at explaining my thoughts or feelings, especially out loud, so I can imagine that my boyfriend has to rely on the "shoddy cursive" of my body language and other cues to figure out what's going on.

We have a very messy past. We've been in love with each other for years, but it was a constant case of "wrong place at the wrong time". He would fall for other girls not knowing how I felt, and I ended up dating another person for a while because I didn't think I had a chance with this guy. We said some horrible things to each other. Those things would be the words like knives.

Now (long story short), after 3 or 4 years, we're finally together, and it is most certainly a beautiful mess. Now we're finally in the final verse of the song. It's not perfect by any means, but it was definitely worth it. If we had our own song, this would be it.

General Comment:In an album filled with brilliant songs, this is my favourite. Mainly because Jason voices out the secret soundtrack of my soul.

To me, this song is a simple ode to the quirky, quick-witted, sharp-tongued love of his life. She's turned his orderly mundane life upside down into a beautiful mess, and he is loving every minute of it.
Just being with her brings a wild and unexpected injection of beauty to his everyday humdrum life - who else would dress up just to pick up trash?

She has a sharp tongue but a loving heart. She's strong but still leans on him, humble about her strengths but greedy for life experiences. She has a quick mind and quicker comebacks - her "shoddy cursive" suggests she's in a "reckless" headlong rush - to experience life, and to do things in her own unimititable style.

However, their relationship is just as strong through the good times ( through timeless words, priceless pictures/ we'll fly like birds not of this earth) and the bad ( blade-like words, played in the dirt, turning tides, hearts scarred, torn dresses and stained shirts) as long as they remain together through the years and the battles.

Despite the ups and downs, their relationship is intact and so much stronger for it. He's savouring the triumph of having made it so far with her - " cos here we are"..."oh the wait was so worth it"

I wish someone would sing this to me.

General Comment:its a little bit crazy but my favourite moment in the songs is the last two words, when it gets really quiet and he almost whispers this two words: worth ... it... and the "It" you can almost hear the voice vibrate and THEN (you have to listen carefully to hear it) there is this little moment of silence and then you can hear the guitar site scratch a little over the wood of the guitar, when the chord changes
yes how I said a little crazy but I love this seconds of the song.
Oh yes, and the rest is great too :D

Song Meaning:I think overall the song is about loving a girl who has a chaotic personality and dealing with all the things that and just love in general throws at you. And it’s also about them making it through it and being better off for it.

“Well I guess it just suggests
that this is just what happiness is”
This part to me is like him saying he loves her personality no matter how strange it is and realizing she makes him happy.

“Hey, what a beautiful mess this is
It’s like picking up trash in dresses”
I think that line means love is messy and working through it creates beauty and takes a kind of grace that only works between two people who love each other.

“And the kind and courteous is a life I’ve heard
But it’s nice to say that we played in the dirt
Cause here, here we are, Here we are”
I think this part is saying he is happen they went through all the shitty parts of the relationship because they did make it through and now they know their love isn’t just some game, act, or illusion.

It is a great song though no matter what it means. Jason Mraz sings with such feeling that it makes you need to listen to him over again.

Song Meaning:I've listened to this song over and over for a couple of hours now. But i'm going to give the meaning a shot.
Well, I think he's saying how much he loves her even though she has her imperfections "Humble but you're greedy", which is contradicting himself like the title beautiful mess which is clearly an oximoron.
But I think he's also trying to say that even though sometimes she can do things, which is can't. He loves her anyway - I like being submerged in your contradictions dear.
By the end though, it shows that no matter they've made it through and he loves her.
Just a thought :) Either way, this song is beautiful.
Please reply if you think you have a better meaning for I like being submerged in your contradictions dear because i really love this line! :)

My Interpretation:This song is about a conflicted relationship... obviously, he adores her, and accepts the flaws that he has outlined throughout the lyrics-- mostly her contradictory personality and inability to be honest, especially, I think, with herself. I think that she is constantly changing herself, and possibly the way that she acts/ thinks, but he is crazy about her regardless. I also get the impression that maybe she puts herself first, "You've got the best of both worlds/ You're the kind of girl who can take down a man/ And lift him back up again..." being said that she sometimes tears him down, but then contradicts herself by lifting him back up again.

I think that he wants her to be herself. Especially considering the verse: "Although you were biased, I love your advice/ Your comebacks, they're quick/ And probably have to do with your insecurities/ There's no shame in being crazy/ Depending on how you take these/ Words that paraphrasing this relationship we're staging..." The way she acts is based on her insecurities, and he wishes that she would just embrace herself. Maybe he has been in the same place she has been previously?

I may be wrong, hell, who knows for sure... one thing is for sure: this song is pure genius. Mraz has the voice of an angel. (:

Song Meaning:I think the part that says "There's no shame in being crazy, depending on how you take these words, I'm paraphrasing this relationship we're staging" is meant to be taken as one line. He's not actually saying that they ARE staging their relationship. He's saying that someone might THINK that they are staging their relationship because he calls her "crazy".

General Comment:This song reminds me of the girl I used to have. "Your style is quite selective but your mind is rather reckless." She was my beautiful mess...
