How I wish you could see the potential,
the potential of you and me
It's like a book elegantly bound,
but in a language that you can't read just yet

[Chorus]
You gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love, I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love, I will possess your heart

There are days when outside your window,
I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective,
when we'll be lovers, lovers at last

[Chorus]

I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart

You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won't let you, let me down so easily, so easily

[Chorus]

You gotta spend some time love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love, I will possess your heart

[Repeat: x3]
I will possess your heart

General Comment:A few things come to mind. Distance, space, rejection. All the while This person is trying to persuade someone to see another perspective "How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me". The song's lyrics to me suggest that it's still an open book (the potential and how he could possess her heart, or lover). But somehow the potential is really there! got to spend some time. Overall... Who knows. Great beat.

Song Meaning:this song is not even remotely about a stalker, or stalking.

he is singing about a girl that broke up with him, and left him wondering why. perhaps she ended it prematurely (at least to him) and he feels like if she comes back and gives it a real shot, it will end out working the way they hoped it would in the beginning.

My Interpretation:My personal take on this song:

This song is about travelling, perhaps reluctantly, most certainly with lingering reservations regarding the change of scenery. The song is presented from the perspective of the city/land/culture in which the traveller has become immersed.

In support of this, is the video itself, which follows a female who appears to be travelling the world, discovering new places (each of which has the potential of "possessing" her heart). While many of the scenes are presented with an eerie feel, there are also many scenes in which the young woman is content, and they seem to appear with increasing frequency as the video progresses.

"There are days when outside your windows, I see my reflection as I slowly pass..." is a referernce to the world outside passing her by, waiting for her to accept it--to come out and be part of it. I think there is a deeper intention of the foreign land representing reality itself (and acceptance of the foreign land as an acceptance of, or submission to, reality). It's about giving things a chance and having faith.

General Comment:This song allows Death Cab's musical talent shine. The long intro is used to symbolize the distance, the patience, and the long wait this "admirer" has to endure before he/she confronts his/her love. The muic video capures it very well.
The long intro almost forces you as the listener to pay much closer attenion to the lyics themselves. And understand the story. This admirer has the 'lyrics' well thought out and his heart is gradually quickens as he/she gets closer to confronting this love of his/hers.

    absolutely amazing song.

Song Meaning:Here's my next interpretation for Narrow Stairs as a concept album.

This is our character really showing us how much he wants this dream girl of his. He really believes that if she spent time with him, he would have her. I believe that it is supposed to come across as creepy, and you'll see why when you read my interpretation for the next song. She rejects all of his advances because he's becoming obsessive. Yet still, he endlessly will not give up on her. His infatuation for this girl is so deep that it has completely blinded him from the truth.

See the next song for further progression on the story.
