Lyrics for The Boys Are Too Refined as interpreted by thoseguiltyeyes

The Boys Are Too Refined Lyrics
The boys who kiss and bite
They are the brilliant ones
Who speak and write with silver luck
They sing in clever tongues
Oh, how my knees go weak to be the one
She kicks and bucks

Always quick to follow
The boys are too refined
Won't matter tomorrow
Oh, to be in his mind

And if the timing is right
To sneak off into the night
I'll let myself be taken
Just for the thrill
And if I'm given the chance
To be a doll in his hands
I will be sure we shake
The mountains while we dance

To daddy, singing sweet
A lullaby to all his credit speak
His golden light
To the edge with a car
He sent it off a cliff just for the spark
To hell with why

Always quick to follow
The boys are too refined
Won't matter tomorrow
Oh, to be in his mind

And if the timing is right
To sneak off into the night
I'll let myself be taken
Just for the thrill
And if I'm given the chance
To be a doll in his hands
I will be sure we shake
The mountains while we dance

And if the timing is right
To sneak off into the night
I'll let myself be taken
Just for the thrill
And if I'm given the chance
To be a doll in his hands
I will be sure we shake
The mountains while we

And if the timing is right
To sneak off into the night
I'll let myself be taken
Just for the thrill
And if I'm given the chance
To be a doll in his hands
I will be sure we shake
The mountains while we dance

Only 4 songs into the album and I already know that this will be one of my favorite songs.

*And if I'm given the chance
to be a doll in his hands

I've only heard the live version, though. I should've pre-ordered the album.

I'm not positive, but the first time I heard it, I thought it was about her wanting to be in a romance where the guy is a writer or an artist, and uses her as his inspiration.
"The boys are too refined" so my guess is she's wanting someone more spontaneous.
But it doesn't sound like she wants a long relationship, it sounds like she'd rather just have the thrill of sneaking out with a guy.

I don't know. That's just what I got.

She doesn't want an official relationship with anyone; she just wants the thrill of...being single?? I agree with miss compassion.

I love Greta for this song. I had barely heard any of the other songs on their album and I knew this was my new favorite. My sister was all about Pretty. Odd. and listening to that and I would come inside singing this song and she thought I was sooo weird for not listening to That Green Gentlemen with her lol

Anyway, my point is I love this song with a great passion, and I love The Hush Sound, woo =]

Best song on the new album! All of their sounds keep their typical quirky style, but this song to me comes closest to their past work with a great difference too. Piano is lovely in this songs.

As for the meaning, pretty straight forward... besides the "to daddy singing sweet - a lullaby to his credit speak" stanza.. that throws me off a bit, but I have my theories...just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the song.

well.. maybe she's talking about her dad not being present in her life besides as a baby ("a lullaby to his credit speak") because it sounds like he left her or isn't around anymore ("to the edge with a car - he sent it off a cliff for a spark") and she can't depend/rationalize it ("to hell with why") which is maybe her way of explaining in this song why she's afraid/not looking for a long-term relationship and just a "thrill" type of thing........ um.. yeah?

The boys i mean are not refined
They go with girls who buck and bite
They do not give a fuck for luck
They hump them thirteen times a night
One hangs a hat upon her tit
One carves a cross on her behind
They do not give a shit for wit
The boys i mean are not refined

They come with girls who bite and buck
Who cannot read and cannot write
Who laugh like they would fall apart
And masturbate with dynamite

The boys i mean are not refined
They cannot chat of that and this
They do not give a fart for art
They kill like you would take a piss

They speak whatever's on their mind
They do whatever's in their pants
The boys i mean are not refined
They shake the mountains when they dance

Like most interpretations of songs, mine is about 90% projection and 10% textual clues, so bear with me.

The narrator, who I'm not going to assume is Ms. Salpeter even if it probably is, really, really wants this guy who is brassy, ballsy and probably a terrible idea. She wants to be the new girl he's fucking, but she's not one of those biting, bucking girls (I warned you about the projection), even if she would really like to try it.

The boys who kiss and bite
They are the brilliant ones
Who speak and write with silver luck
They sing in clever tongues
Oh, how my knees go weak to be the one
She kicks and bucks

She longs for something more dangerous and thrilling, I get the distinct sense of wanting to make a mistake, not just for the excitement that comes along with it, but even to have made the mistake itself.

Also, thanks alexmce for showing where the inspiration for the song came from and for introducing me to a fantastic poem.

As someone who's had the experience described in this song, I'll tell what I'm 99% sure it means.

She just wants a hook up. She doesn't want to worry about consequences, she'll "send it off the cliff just for the spark, to hell with why."

Just as she gets what she wants though, a bit of fun, the dance to be the doll in his hands, the guy backs down because "the boys are too refined."

Seems to me like this song comes from the point of view of one of the 'girls who buck and bite' from e.e. cummings' "the boys i mean are not refined"--or, rather, from the point of view of someone who'd like to be one of those girls.

i think it's talking about how [no offence] guys do stupid things for no reason and just fool around yet, she still likes him. for instance "To the edge with a car
He sent it off a cliff just for the spark
To hell with why"
maybe that means he can mess around with a girl for no reason, just to fool around with a girl and it obviously hurts her.

Maybe it's an ode to that poem, the narrator lusting after EE Cummings.

in my opinion, i think it's about a girl who's in love with a boy who is interested in sluts; "she kicks and bucks". and yet, she still longs to be his girl, even though she'll know she'll be taken advantage of... only wanted for her body: "I'll let myself be taken, Just for the thrill." she doesn't care, because of how much she cares for him.

I think this is a beautiful and creative interpretation of the poem "the boys i mean are not refined", by e.e. cummings. As a literature buff and publishing employee nothing makes me happier than literary allusions!

Here is my little interpretation, in case anyone is curious:

I think that the girl (Greta or not) is strongly attracted to the kind of sulky, artsy-writer type of boys, who are usually too refined for just a one night stand. (The "won't matter tommorrow")She's obviously looking for a no-strings-attached fling, with the type of guy she's attracted to.
"Oh to be in his mind" is her wishing that she could be the one the boy thinks of in all aspects- smart enough to have a one-night stand with (because saying you nailed an easy whore is not very impressive, but a fling with a usually unapproacable, classy girl who doesn't put out much is), and very sexy.
When they finally do it (as it sort of implies he would be her first) ,she will make sure it is mind-blowing, winkwink.

Beautiful song, and simply lovely the references to ee cummings.

Strangely, I got nothing like what everyone else got from this song! More for me it rang that she wants to be with this vlever, dangerous boy. She just wants to sneak off at night with him and have the time of her life! I'm probably wrong, but that's how it made me feel :\ It doesn't help that at the time I first heard this I was in a predicament when I was dating a nice boy and a 'dangerous' boy from my past wanted me to sneak out at night and party with him...
