Weight of days lost holding you down
You'll look for me, but I wont be found
The blue birds flutter in my chest
Oh, they want to sing
You'll have to break me open to hear anything
Before the world dies at my door
[Chorus]
I'll break the sky, for you and I are going no where
Kiss good-bye a dozen times before we give them
Why do I need anyone else?
When I can break the sky myself
Won't be haunted by dreams I've deferred
Won't set my heart frozen in amber
The love you always seem to find is syrupy sweet
One taste and you've made up your mind
Too ripe to eat
Before the world dies at my door
[Chorus]
Fear will hold you back
If you believe in that
Fear will hold back
If you believe in that
Fear will hold you back
If you believe in that
Fear will hold you back
If you believe in that
I'll break the sky for
You and I are going no where
Kiss good-bye a dozen times
Before we give them
Why do I need anyone else?
Why do I need anyone?
[Chorus]
You'll look for me, but I wont be found
The blue birds flutter in my chest
Oh, they want to sing
You'll have to break me open to hear anything
Before the world dies at my door
[Chorus]
I'll break the sky, for you and I are going no where
Kiss good-bye a dozen times before we give them
Why do I need anyone else?
When I can break the sky myself
Won't be haunted by dreams I've deferred
Won't set my heart frozen in amber
The love you always seem to find is syrupy sweet
One taste and you've made up your mind
Too ripe to eat
Before the world dies at my door
[Chorus]
Fear will hold you back
If you believe in that
Fear will hold back
If you believe in that
Fear will hold you back
If you believe in that
Fear will hold you back
If you believe in that
I'll break the sky for
You and I are going no where
Kiss good-bye a dozen times
Before we give them
Why do I need anyone else?
Why do I need anyone?
[Chorus]

The lines “Weight of days lost holding you down” and “Won’t be haunted by dreams I’ve deferred” show that she has been missing out, and wants to live the dreams that she has been putting on hold.
She realises she doesn’t need anyone else to do all the things she can do by herself, and because the person who she is with is not the right person for her, she wants to break away and live independent of them.
“Kiss goodbye a dozen times before we get there” shows that she is in love with this person, so breaking away is slightly more difficult. Along with this is the line “Fear will hold you back, if you believe in that”, meaning the fear of detaching yourself and going it alone will prevent others from breaking away, but she herself *will* break away because she doesn’t believe in fear holding her back. You’ll have to look for her, but she won’t be found – she’s gone to break the sky herself!
There is a girl (wow. obvious much?) who likes this one guy. She wont let the bluebirds out to sing (they are a symbol of love). She is trying to deny her love because she thinks she will be fine on her own. "break the sky" Is an expression basically saying she can do anything.
you look for me
But I won't be found"
-I think she is with a guy she isn't really in love with anymore. She knows the relationship won't last and feels bad for "holding you down." She hasn't broken up with him, maybe because she is afraid of being alone or of hurting him. ("fear will hold you back")
"The bluebirds flutter in my chest
Oh, they want to sing
You'll have to break me open
To hear anything"
-She wants to move on and do her own thing, but she doesn't let it show.
"Before the world dies at my door"
-I think the relationship is kind of bringing her down. She's not as happy as she could be
"I'll break the sky
For you and I are going nowhere
Kiss goodbye a dozen times
Before we get there
Why do I need anyone else
When I can break the sky myself?"
-She wants to break up with him because she knows she doesn't want to be with him forever, but maybe it is hard to break up with him, so she might be dragging it out a bit ("kiss goodbye a dozen times before we get there"). But she knows she can do well on her own and be independent, so she doesn't need him.
"Won't be haunted by dreams I've deferred
Won't set my heart frozen in amber"
-Being in this relationship has caused her to put some of her dreams on hold, but she doesn't want to get older and regret not pursuing them. And she doesn't want to commit to this guy.
I'm not sure about this part:
"The love you always seem to find is syrupy sweet
One taste and you've made up your mind
Too ripe to eat"
that last bit, makes is very clear that she was in fear, but will not let it hold her back.
she is leaving and setting her own course.
"Fear will hold you back if you believe in that" means how fear is pulling her back from breaking up with the guy, but since a side of her doesnt really want to "fear is pulling her back" since another side of her is believing that she shouldnt break up with the guy, i think.
or it could mean doing something by her own self, with independance, but being too afraid to do it :) (ie bunjee-jumping off a building?)
There are dreams I've let drift away, but I won't give up; I won't let myself be haunted by this.
--
"Won't set my heart frozen in amber"
I won't set my heart on this; I won't always love you; I won't let the feelings I've had for you keep me trapped.
-i think it kinda refers to the langston hughes poem 'raisin in the sun' where he asked the question "what happens to a dream deferred?"
-shes just saying that she won't let what she wanted the relationship to be constantly be a reminder of how the relationship really went and will not allow the memory of it to constantly nag at her
I believe she was in a relationship that was initially great and everything she had hoped for, but it eventually went sour. It's that memory of that perfect moment that kept her with that person, hoping that it will come back. At some point she realizes the relationship will never be what it once was, so she decides to end it.
