Lyrics for Deep Blue Sea as interpreted by ThatHansonCover

Deep Blue Sea Lyrics
deep blue sea darlin
on a deep blue sea
deep blue sea darlin
on a deep blue sea

and it was mamma that got
drowned in out in that deep blue sea

dig his grave darlin with a
silver spade
dig his grave darlin with a
silver spade

and it was brother that got
drowned in out in that deep blue sea

drop him down darlin
with a golden chain
drop him down darlin
with a golden chain

and it was daddy that got
drowned in out in that deep blue sea

This song is so beautiful but every time I hear "Dig his grave.." I always think he says "Dick is great..." Anyone else hear that?

Is there any meaning behind this other than someones relatives drowning?

I think this is about the lose of any loved one and the way they, and the memory of them, are treated with honor. The honor part is in these two lines that reference precious metals "dig his grave darlin' with a silver spade" and "drop him down darlin' with a golden chain". It seems also like a lullaby to calm oneself after such a hard thing. The rhythm and softness of the tune and the idea of "deep blue sea" evokes a calming effect. Absolutely gorgeous tune.

this is a traditional American folk song, possibly from Britain. Pete Seeger and various other singers have done versions.

I think it more specifically brings up an image of a heroin overdose perhaps. Silver spade being a spoon used in cooking it and the golden chain being the tie for the arm when injecting it. Could be way off but makes you think.
