She was staring out the window of that SUV
Complaining, saying "I can't wait to turn eighteen"
She said "I'll make my own money, and I'll make my own rules"
Momma put the car in park out there in front of the school
She kissed her head and said "I was just like you"

[Chorus]
You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Before she knows it she's a brand new bride
In her one-bedroom apartment, and her daddy stops by
He tells her "It's a nice place"
She says "It'll do for now"
Starts talking about babies and buying a house
Daddy shakes his head and says "Baby, just slow down"

You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

Five years later there's a plumber workin' on the water heater
Dog's barkin', phone's ringin'
One kid's cryin', one kid's screamin'
She keeps apologizin'
He says "They don't bother me
I've got two babies of my own
One's thirty six, one's twenty three
Huh, it's hard to believe, but

You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

You're gonna' miss this
Yeah
You're gonna' miss this

General Comment:This is looking at the fleeting nature of time from the younger person's view, albeit with counseling from the parent. It can be put together with 'Then They Do', which is from the parents' view, to create bookends for the whole topic. If you are a parent, you cannot listen to either one without getting emotional about your own life, parents and kids. That reminds me, its time for some hugs...

My Opinion:when you're young, you're in a rush to do everything then when you finally get there, you want it all back and say to youself "i miss that" which is what Trace is saying, to not take anything for granted and to take everything slow and just enjoy your life.

General Comment:This song is so true! It's like he's saying "You may be in a rush to grow up, but, one day, you will want this all back, so you need to enjoy it while you can."

My Opinion:Wow, this song makes me almost cry! It's soo true, and really made me realize something.
I'm in Jr.High, Grade 8, and for the past year or so, I've been saying "I wanna grow up so I can get out of school, become a veterinarian, live in my own house..the dream life. But this song made me think.. and told me not to take life for granted. Not to sweat the small stuff. And someday, I'm gonna want to be young again, so enjoy life. :)

General Comment:This song is so true. I just finish my first year of college and boy I remember what high school was like and how much I hated it, but it was a lot easier than some of the things I have to do now. It's been more than a year since I been a student at my old high school and sometimes I wish I could go back and do it all again. I miss it..but I don't at the same time.

General Comment:Why these country song always makes me cry?!?lol

Somestimes I can't help but be envious about you guys having such great singers singing songs just like this one. In Philippines we do have some good stuff to, but nothing to compare specially to this Trace Adkins' "You're Gonna Miss This"

General Comment:yes! I just almost cried listening to that part when the plumber talks about his kids. This song literally converted me to country music. I absolutely love it.

I just left my small northern california town, and am now going to an urban 4-year university, and this song gets me so sad!. Im only about an hour and a half's drive from home but i still miss all my family and friends and it makes me so sad that my days of being young and stupid are over. This song always touches me...

General Comment:i like this song, because a lot of teenagers are in a rush to grow up. and I was, and now I'm about to graduate high school, and I'm saying "where did the time go??" so, now I'm trying to not take life for granted and not try and grow up too fast. because before ya know it, I'll be out in the real world, making decisions for myself. and its scary to think about. so, i really relate to this song a lot.
