Lyrics for Sweet and Low as interpreted by gamesteeler712

Sweet and Low Lyrics
Anywhere you go, anyone you meet
Remember that your eyes can be your enemies
I said hell is so close, and heavens out of reach,
But I ain't giving up quite yet,
I've got too much to lose,

Hold me down, sweet and low little girl
Hold me down, sweet and low and I will carry you home,
Hold me down, sweet and low little girl
Hold me down, and i'll carry you home,

The rain is gonna fall, the sun is gonna shine
The wind is gonna blow, the waters gonna rise
She said, when that day comes look into my eyes
But no ones giving up quite yet, we've got too much to lose,

Hold me down, sweet and low little girl
Hold me down, sweet and low and I will carry you home,
Hold me down, sweet and low little girl,
Hold me down,

And i'll carry you all the way
When you say you're fine
But you're still young and out of line,
When all I need's to turn around
To make it last, to make it count,
I ain't gonna make the same mistakes
That put my mama in her grave
I don't wanna be alone

well, i suppose the meaning is like, he likes this girl a lot, they spend much time together, lots of nice moments. but he makes mistakes, he's afraid to let her down again, but truly, she's the one for him.
he's ready to do anything for her and make it up, because i think, she means a lot to him.

even if i'm wrong, i really like this song, it's so simple, but soo magical. love augustana

This song is so cute, and so different from some of their more anguished songs in the past. Love it!

And here I thought "Boston" was the best they could do.

Silly me.

he wants to be held down, he's just given up on things and is okay with staying at the bottom, like his girlfriend is, cuz at least he'll be with her, adn not much else matters. that's wat i got

I'm pretty sure this song is about his daughter.
- all the references to "little girl" and "you're still young"
it was the first thought i had upon hearing the song.

I agree with quevenchy. He loves the girl, he knows he's made mistakes and that he needs to change. Otherwise he will end up alone, which is exactly what he doesn't want. Love the song!! Love Augustana!!

I really think its about his daughter. it said that he would "carry her home" to me refering to a child falling asleep on a car ride or something. and "little girl" and "your still to young" so i think its about that.

This song is so awesome! Love the guy's voice. :)

Anyway, this song is basically about not giving up on love.

In the first verse, the guy is saying that what you see can be deceiving (your eyes can be your enemy); obviously, he's been hurt before by love. He says that love seems to be impossible to find nowadays (heaven's out of reach), but then again he isn't going to give up easily because love is worth the pain.

In the chorus, he's telling the girl that although he's lost faith in love, if she shows that she is true, then he will change for her (i will carry you home). He's asking her to be patient by "holding him down sweet and low" so that he can believe that there is such a thing as "love."

In the second verse, the girl is asking him to tell her when his love for her will not change (rain is gonna fall, sun is gonna shine). She apparently has been disappointed by love also, but he says that love is worth the sacrifice.

In the bridge, he says that he is willing to give her everything if she is true. But he's still scared to fall in love because he doesn't want to end up like his mom, who died of a broken heart (same mistakes that put my mama in her grave). But in the end, anything is better than being alone.

Obviously, it's better to put your heart through the pain and hopefully find love than to not love and end up all alone!

:D

hmmm well when I first heard this song I thought it was beautiful and sweet...and I hope it is not to a daughter considering my boyfriend sang this song to me. I think it's more about a boy who loves a girl and doesn't want to mess it up, so he's saying you have the control "hold me down sweet and low little girl" but I think he's older than her and has already made the mistakes so he is telling her to be careful...and he'll take care of her

I believe this song is about an older guy who is in love with a younger girl. She is the love of his life, but he is scared to give is heart completely to her because she is too young and naive.(But you're still young and out of line). So basically she could do some SEVERE damage to him if she wanted to just up and run. His mother put her heart out there and the heart break ended up taking her life.( Broken heart disease or possibly her being so depressed that she took her own life.) So basically he is very much in love, but he knows the downward spiral he could take if he makes himself vulnerable to this young woman. Such a powerful and meaningful song!!

I think this song is dedicated to his daughter. Evaluating the lyrics, it shows a father giving words of wisdom to his daughter... the girl is vulnerable at a young age, but she has nothing to fear cause her dad is there for her.

I think this song is about a couple that has spent so much time with one another, but they are bracing themselves for a departure. The female in this relationship could be moving away or she is just in another step of her life.
They both want to work it out in the end.

The lyrics such as:
"Anywhere you go, anyone you meet
Remember that your eyes can be your enemies"
And
"The rain is gonna fall, the sun is gonna shine
The wind is gonna blow, the waters gonna rise"
Signify that days will pass when they won't see one another, but they will still be there for each other and still be deeply in love.
The line. "But no ones giving up quite yet, we've got too much to lose" says just that.

I haven't completely sat down and analyzed the whole song (yet!) but this is just a loose interpretation of what I think the song is about! :) :)

Thoughs?

You know, originally I really thought this song was really just a love song-- but I'm reading these comments about how it's about his daughter-- and I can totally see it! You know, there's that poem "A Prayer For My Daughter" by WB Yeats.. which is basically him talking about what he does and doesn't want his daughter to become (often comparing negative aspects to Maud Gonne).... This song sounds a lot like this poem. Augustana is basically saying "Ya know, it's going to be tough, and you're really going to want to give up-- but there's so much to live for that it's not worth giving up."
I am really impressed with Augustana-- I thought for sure they would be a one hit wonder.

I am going to take a completely different approach from most of you all, and I really think this song is about a guy that's in love with a girl, but he is struggling and is thinking about ending his life. The song says that he's not ready to give up yet because there's too much to lose, and also makes reference to hell and heaven. Also it says that he doesn't want to make the same mistakes as his mom which brought her to her grave. I think this song is about a guy that has thought about death but is in love with a younger girl who he knows can save him so he's asking for her to help him so he doesn't end up dead. Also if any of you guys have seen the music video is shows his hand bleeding and stuff. I might be completely off track with this, but those are just my thoughts.
