Lyrics for I Don't Want to Die (In the Hospital) as interpreted by xloveology

I Don't Want to Die (In the Hospital) Lyrics
I don’t want to die in the hospital
No I don’t want to die in the hospital
No I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

I don’t want to hear all those factory sounds
Looking like the girl in the sleeping gown
I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

Can you make a sound to distract the nurse
Before I take a ride in that long black hearse
I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots back on

Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots back on

I got to go, go, go
Because I don’t have long

Yeah, I don’t give a damn what those doctors say
I don’t want to spend another lonesome day
I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

They don’t let you smoke and you can’t get drunk
All there is to watch are these soap operas
I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

Can you get this tube out of my arm
Morphine in my blood like a slow sad song
I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots back on

Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots back on

I got to go, go, go
Because I don’t have long

Is there still a world at my windowsill?
All there ever was I remember still
I don’t want to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

Don’t know when it’s day or when it's night
All I ever see are flourescent lights
I’m not going to die in this hospital
You got to take me back outside

They give me all these flowers and big balloons
But I’m not going to stay in this little room
I’m not going to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

Are the stars still in the sky?
Is that fat moon on the rise?
Feel the earth against my feet
As the cold wind calls for me

I ain’t going to die in the hospital
No I ain’t going to die in the hospital
No I ain’t going to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

I ain’t going to die in the hospital
No I ain’t going to die in the hospital
No I ain’t going to die in the hospital
You got to take me back outside

I was just gonna say the same thing about the Morphine line. This whole song is so much fun. And some parts of it remind me of older Bright Eyes songs, he just has so much energy. Similar to the energy in "The Calender Hung Itself" the songs aren't really similar but for some reason the energy I get from this song REALLY reminds me of The Calender Hung Itself.

Great song. One thing I like is how the lyrics start off I don't "wanna" die in this hospital, then at the end it's I ain't "gonna" die in this hospital. It shows his frustration growing and his resolve getting stronger. And agreed HomerunHenry, the Morphine line is the best part of the song.

Whose the backup singer in this song? During the "Help me get my boots on" part?

This is my favorite on his new CD. I agree with the morphine in the blood line being the best part. Conor has such a sexy voice. This is a lot of fun. :]

Some minor corrections:

I don’t wanna die in the hospital
No I don’t wanna die in the hospital
No I don’t wanna die in the hospital
You gotta take me back outside

I don’t wanna hear all those factory sounds

Help me get my boots on
Help me get my boots back on

Help me get my boots on

Help me get my boots back on

I gotta go, go, go

Janet Weiss sings backup.

It's amazing how the song can be both so fun and so morbid.

This song, I think, just may be my favorite on the album. It kind of reminds me of "At The Bottom of Everything" in a sense thats its just so twisted, but yet it sounds so happy. I love it. And the meanings are similar too. It also reminds me of Easy/Lucky/Free as well.

God, I can't get enough of this song. "They give me all these flowers and big balloons!" Is sung so amazing. And of course the morphine line was amazing, as everyone else said

And someone brought it up already, but at the end he makes the transition from "I don't want to die in the Hospital" to "I ain't going to die in the Hospital" and also the transition from "You gotta take me outside" to "You're gonna to take me outside" I thought that was very clever, and I smiled when I heard him sing that. Conor has always been good at knowing when to transition.

Its pretty obvious that the song is about enjoying life while you have it, and it seems like a cliched idea, but Conor makes it seem so fresh, and he sings the song like a story. Its amazing how he makes this song with such a unique meaning, but at first it seems so cliched. I can't explain in words how much I love this song, I really cant. And its hard to exactly explain what it means to me, but god, I love it.

Cool song.
Anyone else think it sounds a heap like a Modest Mouse song?
I can't recall the exact name of it, but it's on the 'Good News for People Who Love Bad News' album.
I hate to call it unoriginal, but it feels that way.
A very fun track though.

This song is SOOOOO fun, while at the same time so real and even harsh. His images are so clear, you can feel yourself in the room, even feel the tube in your arm and morphine in your body, and feel yourself pulling your boots on to escape.
You can see the stupid balloons and flowers coming in, so meaningless to someone so confined and about to die.

I love when he asks about the outside -"is there still a world at my windowsill?"... showing how isolated and out of touch you can get sitting in a hospital. It's so sterile and removed that you actually start to wonder if the world you remember still exists.

Love Conors vocal touches like the whispering of "like a slow sad song", and how he raises his voice at the end of "cold wind calls to me - EEEEEEE...!" He sounds like he's cutting loose and having a ball.

I saw an interview in which he said this song came out of a conversation with a friend of his who's 70, about this situation. (I forget if the friend is actually IN the hospital or sick, or if they were just talking about it.)

Anyway, he's an amazing writer.
This song kicks ass.

To whomever said this reminded them of The Calender Hung Itself, I know you mean, because the whispered "slow, sad song" morphine part always reminds me of the whispered "here is where you rest" part of Calender.
