Dont worry
Everybody in the room notices you
Sit back and relax
The night is early
We are about to overdo it
So come and tell me something that youve already told me
Cause everybodys already heard our lovely stories
Im hoping some of them are true

Ive been losing lots of keys lately,
I dont know what that means
But maybe Ive been better off with things that cant be locked at all
Ive been feeling kind of sea sick lately,
See you reaching to me gonna save me
You were me, I would much rather take the fall

The world has its ways
To quite us down
The world has its ways
To quiet us down comes the rain
Down comes our spirits again
But Down comes the strength
To lift us up and then

Been going up when now
For to long
Forget how
To let go
Seems to hard
To late now
To turn around
The world has its ways
To quite us down
The world has its ways
To quiet us down comes rain
Down comes our spirits again
Down comes the strength
To lift us up and then

General Comment:I have a cut to sound assignment and I wanna do it on a jack johnson song so ive been listening through his albums with visuals in my head.

To me the beginning of the song sounds like someone at a party sitting at a table just drinking with people but hes really selfconscious so he drinks excessively to get rid of the tension and to try and be `more open`. And his `friends` are telling him stories hes already heard. jack is basically speaking to the person.

thats my interpretation of just the beginning

General Comment:To me, this song is simply about pausing our busy, stressful lives and literally stepping outside. Getting out in nature can be so calming, whether it's an autumn hike on a leaf-covered path or a walk on a desolate beach at sunrise. We get so absorbed in technology or completing errands or inadvertently maintaining the monotony of our daily agenda. Just go raw, it's good for the soul... "the world has its ways to quiet us down, down comes the rain, down go our spirits again, but down comes the strength to lift us up and then..."

Lyric Correction:The lyrics are a bit wrong, these are the correct ones from his website:

    Don’t worry
Everybody in the room notices you
Sit back and relax the night is early
    You’re about to overdo it
So come and tell me something that you’ve already told me
Because everybody’s heard all of your stories
I hope that some of them are true

I’ve been losing lots of keys lately
I don’t know what that means but maybe
I’d be better off with things that can’t be locked at all

I’ve been feeling kind of seasick lately
See you reaching to me going to save me
If it’s you or me I would much rather take the fall

    The world has its ways
    To quiet us down
    The world has its ways
    To quiet us down
    Down comes the rain
    Down come our spirits again
    But down comes the strength
To lift us up and then

    Been going
    Upwind now
    For too long
    Forget how
    To let go
    Seems too hard
    Too late now
    To turn around

    The world has its ways
    To quiet us down
    The world has its ways
    To quiet us down
    Down comes the rain
    Down go our spirits again
    But down comes the strength
To lift us up and then

General Comment:i find this song to be about life getting you down, not about large issues such as death though, more so about stupid reasons that, because of what this world has become, get to our spoiled selves, like when we lose our keys its the end of the world right? when really that's nothing compared to what some people go through like Jack losing his cousin, tragedies like that are much more real than losing a phone or wallet, but yet we don't open our eyes to what's become.

General Comment:dude I am so late getting to this.

there is a mis-quote in the lyrics. it is not "when" it is "wind" as in a sailboat tacking to windward. Not an easy task. I think it is easy to understand now

    "Been going up wind now,
    For to long
    Forget how
    To let go"

When you are constantly moving and moving you end up doing so for the sake of doing it and forget how to just let it all go...

General Comment:I see MadeforThis's point on the first verse

Him "losing keys" is apparently a metaphor on an issue he has...when you lose keys, you either cant get into your doors nor can you lock them. When I think of doors, I usually pertain to things I keep locked up inside me, thoughts, feelings, emotions. When I "lose my keys" which I have, I see it as somehow losing my mind and becoming detached...letting my door of unlocked emotions get the best of me on how hopeless the situations of life seem to be. Hence:

    The world has its ways
    To quiet us down

Having too much hope can do this. Having an unexpected death when life is at an all time high can do this. Hes depressed pretty much, but I guess his wife is trying to help him:

See you reaching to me gonna save me
You were me, I would much rather take the fall

But when you're that low, you have that feeling that you would much rather die...theres no use in getting back up and going forward, for its much too hard.

    Been going
    Up when now
    For too long
    Forget how
    To let go
    Seems too hard
    Too late now
    To turn around

    Amazing bridge...gives me chills.

Let go...and you're free right? But when so many people count on you and you've "been going up...for too long," true freedom is a hard thing to attain because you "forget how to let go"...and if that keeps going it'll be "too late...to turn around." You've committed yourself to a cause.

Face it, Jack can't just up and quit his music career...we need him too much, especially in today's world for he can give us hope. He knows this and sings his heart, but I guess his not seeing the change he wants and we as a whole need gets him down...hope that wasnt too cheesy.

    Bittersweet symphony this song.

General Comment:The song puts you in the mind of Jack Johnson walking to a room, probably the funeral of his cousin, maybe the reception. He's expected to speak maybe, because he's Jack Johnson, or maybe he just has to try and connect with them and he's nervous about that. We are about to overdo it is him talking to himself.

The song progresses and he talks about how he has been misplacing keys, keys are really important, and he feels like he has lost all importance of the things that used to be most important to him. Like the sea, Jack Johnson loves the sea, he made surf videos and he's sea-sick, sick of the sea.
I think the last line of the chorus could be him, as who he has become, reaching back to "save" himself, thus the you were me, and he doesn't like who he has become and rejects the help.

the chorus is basically how the rains represent things that get us down and sorrows and troubles and then they come and get us down but the sun sends Down it's light to warm us up and bring us strength to overcome the rains and trials in life. it's just like the water cycle and the way rain works. it's beautiful.

The end is about the cycle and how life takes him places he doesn't like to go an then he has anxieties and wants to get back to where he started. And then it rains. And he starts all over again.

I think they are pretty great and Jack Johnson is the Bob Dylan of our generation.

General Comment:I really like made for this's explanation. every line fits with that so I'll just go along with that.

does anyone understand what he means with the "been going up when now for too long"? it just doesn't make sense to me as a sentence.

and no, I don't think keys means his cousin... that would be a pretty far-fetch'd metaphor.

General Comment:The song is a bit scattered and I do not think it has a single direction. The part I like the most is the first part, where it feels as if the real person is talking to his persona in a very sarcastic tone. I think the part about the keys, is a longing for a life with no lies. He feels sick and troubled, his fake personality offers help but he would rather fall now.
