The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I've got an angel
She doesn't wear any wings
She wears a heart that could melt my own
She wears a smile that could make me want to sing
She gives me presents
With her presence alone
She gives me everything I could wish for
She gives me kisses on the lips just for coming home
She can make angels
I've seen it with my own eyes
You got to be careful when you you've got good love
'Cause them angels will just keep on multiplying
You're so busy changing the world
Just one smile can change all of mine
We share the same soul
Oh-oh-oh-oh
We share the same soul
Oh-oh-oh-oh
We share the same soul
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Mm-mm-mm-mm
She doesn't wear any wings
She wears a heart that could melt my own
She wears a smile that could make me want to sing
She gives me presents
With her presence alone
She gives me everything I could wish for
She gives me kisses on the lips just for coming home
She can make angels
I've seen it with my own eyes
You got to be careful when you you've got good love
'Cause them angels will just keep on multiplying
You're so busy changing the world
Just one smile can change all of mine
We share the same soul
Oh-oh-oh-oh
We share the same soul
Oh-oh-oh-oh
We share the same soul
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Mm-mm-mm-mm

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

good job though .. this is my favorite song off the new cd :)
just a very very simple, straightforward love song. Kim Johnson, you lucky lucky woman!
I went to his concert earlier this year and he told us that this song came about when one of his sons asked the birds and the bees questions. He explained it using a theory of multiplying and this is how the song came about. It was the funniest story wish I could remember it exactly.
thank you imeryl :D
Not just a simple love song about his wife, but about his children also.
"She could make angels I’ve seen it with my own eyes You gotta be careful when you got good love Cause the angels will just keep on multiplying"
Excellent song writing.
Probably my favorite song off the new album.
This is the most beautiful love song ever! "She gives me presents with her precence alone." or "She wears a heart that can melt my own." A song so simple and stripped down. I bought the album at midnight on the release date and driving home with this song playing... I thought my heart was going to stop beating. It is awesome!
After listening to the song a few times, I think the song is definitely about mothers.
"We Share the Same Soul"...such a beautiful line!
best love song I've heard in 2008
