Bob goes to church every Sunday
Every Sunday that the fish ain't bitin'
Bob never have to have dinner with the Preacher
Cos' Bob never bothered gettin' married
He likes to drink a beer or two every now and again
He always had more dogs than he ever had friends
Bob ain't light in the loafers
He might kneel but he never bends over
Bob takes care of his Momma
She's the only one he lets call him Robert
She don't drive anymore so he takes her to the store
And keeps her yard lookin' just like she wants it
Every week at the beauty shop Bob's Momma hears
That another woman's paid 'nother man disappears
Robert ain't exactly scared o' women
He's just got his own way o' livin'
Bob's still gotta antenna on a pole
2 channels come in 2 more comin' through
He used to watch the news but he don't anymore
Ain't none of it new it's the same as before
He figures all any of it's any good for's
Keepin' everybody bored till there ain't nobody
Like Bob anymore
Bob takes care of his Momma
She's a mess but he feels like he oughtta
A big a mess today as bob will say
"she's a big un and she's gonna be a lotta"
He likes to drink a beer or two every now and again
He always had more dogs than he ever had friends
Bob ain't light in the loafers
He might kneel but he never bends over
Every Sunday that the fish ain't bitin'

First of all, Bob is NOT gay. "Light in the loafers" is Southern for gay. Cooley states clearly that Bob "ain't light in the loafers." Ain't = not. Bob is NOT light in the loafers, therefore Bob is NOT gay.
Second, the kneeling/bending over reference seems to cause some confusion. Actually this is a fairly common metaphor. The kneeling person lives the good values, moral principles, and spiritual beliefs acquired through life experiences while the bent over person will do anything to anyone in order to get they want; no values, no moral compass, etc. In other words, Bob is a good guy, he does no harm to anyone.
I hope my interpretation of "Bob" is helpful.
but now that you mention it being gay does make sense too, sortof a looks can be decieving kinds story.
Frankly, from what I know of DBTs, I'm inclined to think Bob is gay. DBTs tend to subvert cliches about the south with their characters, and a gay good old boy is a much more interesting subject for a song than a plain ol' good old boy.
Not that you know of. Which is precisely what the song is saying.
Look at all the cliches:
-Doesn't get married
-Doesn't go to church
-Doesn't care for the preacher
-Doesn't have any friends
-Overprotective neurotic mama
-Still has a "pole" where channels (Johns) come and go
-He kneels but doesn't bend over (not a bottom)
-Not light in the loafers (euphemism for an effeminate gay man) hence Bob is in the closet and hiding it well
DBT_dad has it right about progressing as the line says "till there ain't nobody like Bob anymore."
