Lyrics for That's Not My Name as interpreted by bing_redboy

That's Not My Name Lyrics
Four letter word just to get me along
It’s a difficulty and I’m biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don’t wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

They call me quiet girl
But I’m a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

I miss the catch if they through me the ball
I’m the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, I’m not
Although I’m dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

They call me quiet girl
But i’m a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?

This song is about a prostitute who gets called all the different names by her clients. No one knows her real name and her true personality.

How the hell do they get their songs to sound so annoying and crappy?

The song appears to be about a feeling, not simply being ingnored; it is being ignored by those who claim to care about you. It is a kind of betrayal.

They both appear to be describing the same feeling triggered by different situations. In her case it is various social situations in youth and adulthood. She thought they cared but they even forgot her name.

His context is about the classic music industry phenomenon of "never say no". The execs gush with enthusiasm and promises, but if there is no paperwork ("nothing binding") it means they have no intention of signing you, they just want to string you along in case they change their mind.

I'm thinking the producer thought the guy's part wasn't really necessary and lowered it as much as he could find an excuse for. :-) I didn't even realize it was there at first.

About the transcript itself; I don't thing it is official, so somebody is guessing at all the doubtful bits. We should keep that in mind.

Here are my thoughts on it:

---
"Four little words" - probably.
"Four letter words" - I doubt it.
The four words are "That's not my name". In a british accent the word little can be pronounced "li-uh" which is exactly how it sounds to me.

---
"Last kid standing up against the wall" - I'm not so sure
"Last trick standing up against the wall" - Sounds closer

Granted, trick makes no sense here and kid makes perfect sense in the team-choosing image. Still, that's what it sounds like to me. In the US a trick is a prostitute's customer, but is there a UK usage in which it refers to an available single in a club or at a party? That would fit the rest of the verse perfectly.

---
Why do the call her Hell? Is that some British slang term? Is it short for hello? Could it be "How" or something else?

---
"They call me Quiet Girl, but I'm a riot" - Doesn't sound quite right, but it probably is.
"They call me Kwak-ah, but I'm a Nye-Yah" - closest sounds I can get. Could it be something different?

---
"These heels they keep me boring" - No
"These heels that keep me boring" - Pretty sure.
Trivial? Yes, but we searchers for the truth must be meticulous. :)

---
"Listen to me I'm not" - Doesn't sound right and makes no sense.
"Listen to me; oh, no." - Better. They have it right in the first verse but not the second.

---
"Mary, Jo, Lisa" - Closest, and fits well.
"Maybe Jolisa" - Kinda fits, but kinda weird unless Jolisa is a common name in the UK
"Maryjolisa" - I got 7000 Google hits on it but I bet they're all based on this song!

---
Well that's all I have brain for...

This song reminds me a little too much of a High school football team's cheerleading squad.

actually she says;
"They call me Jay" not Jane(:

its pretty obvious because when she says
Are you calling me bird? It would refer back to Jay.

You know Jaybird (:

and anyways its pretty obvious in the video. :]

I think there may be a bit of feminism in the lyrics. The fact that women are sometimes viewed as objects...and it's not important to treat them equally, but just call them "darling", or whatever.

I'm quite sure it's about her being a prostitute, but being very uncomfortable about it.

Get ready for an essay...

"Four-letter word just to get me along, it's a difficulty and I'm biting on my tongue, and uh... I keep stalling, keeping me together, people around gotta find something to say now."
The first line, "four letter word" could be any number of euphemisms for sex. She uses sex "just to get [her] along." - Money, and possibly companionship. Also, ordering a prostitute is probably an uncomfortable and awkward process. Small talk would hardly flow easily... She's probably stalling because she's nervous or anxious about what she has to do.

"Holding back, everyday the same, don't wanna be a loner, listen to me, oh no. I never say anything at all, but with nothing to consider they forget my name."
She is craving acceptance, even from the people she's 'servicing'. She catches herself trying to say something, as if to make conversation, but she knows she has to keep her interactions impersonal. Because she can't make any sort of personal impression, and gives "nothing to consider", she is forgettable and they forget her name.

"They call me hell, they call me Stacey, they call me her, they call me Jane. That's not my name, that's not my name, that's not my name, that's not my name."
'Hell' - easily something someone would say in a moment of passion. The rest are common female names, which could be the false name she gives to people. Her protests of "that's not my name" stem from her frustration at having to hide herself.

"They call me quiet girl, but I'm a riot, Mary, Jo, Lisa, always the same. That's not my name, that's not my name, that's not my name, that's not my name."
Similarly, she is frustrated at being called "quiet girl" because she knows that she's the opposite - a "riot." She's spent so much time and energy pleasing her 'clients' and they don't pay her enough attention to know anything about who she is. Instead, they address her by a common female name, and they know nothing about her.

"I miss the catch if they throw me the ball, I'm the last kid standing up against the wall. Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring, getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now."
She is reminiscing about her lonely childhood, and not being accepted (not being chosen for a team). Now, she's working hard to fit in to a group and to be accepted, although she feels uncomfortable and out of place. She knows that she's not being herself - falling off shoes that she's not used to.

"So alone all the time at night, lock myself away, listen to me, I'm not... Although I'm dressed up, out and all, with everything considered they forget my name."
She's talking about how despite all the interaction she has with other people, she's still lonely because she has to hide parts of herself from them. She tries to explain that she's not who they think she is, and that she doesn't belong where she is ("Listen to me, I'm not..."). However, despite her dressing the part, and looking memorable, she distances herself from people so well that she makes no impression and people forget her name.

"Are you calling me darling? Are you calling me bird? Are you calling me darling? Are you calling me bird?" These are two common British terms used for unnamed women. She is expressing that if someone wanted to get her attention (especially for her services), because doesn't know her name, they may use one of these impersonal terms to call her.

i don't agree with the interpretation of her sleeping around, but i'm not saying it's wrong, because well, interpretation is, of course, your personal take.

my interpretation is, well, what katie said. haha(: the record industry ordeal.

i love this band; love this song, though i'm getting kind of sick hearing it on the radio 5 times daily. but still, love it.

So, I can see the whole "Sleeping around" thing but couldn't it also be that perhaps she's fallen victim to guys who sleep around and avoid getting caught by calling her darling or bird? She could be saying that guys write her off even as she tries to stand out and her only response from them is that they forget her name.
She could even be alone at night all the time because the guy is cheating...

Just a thought.

I think she's stuck in some boring job somewhere and doesn't feel like she fits in. Maybe it's the first time that she's had to spend time with people who are different to her, and she doesn't realy know how to relate to them. The "darling" and "bird" references could be about some sexist kn*bhead in her office who thinks he's God's gift to women, and is picking on her because she appears to be shy. BTW I think the words are "They call me qui - et" rather than "quiet girl" and "throw me the ball" not through (which is another metaphor for feeling like the odd one out)

The artist said that this song was based on her experiences in the record industry, but I think all good songs have another interpretation, so here's mine (mind you, I'm a former geek)

"I'm the last chick standing up against the wall/ Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring/ Getting clamped up and sitting on the fence now/.../Although I'm dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name"

I think that this song is about a girl who is kind of a wallflower. She goes out with her friends but can't really relate to people that she doesn't know. She gets all dressed up to go out but can't close the deal with guys because she's nervous.

"Holding back, everyday the same/ Don't wanna be a loner/ Listen to me, oh no/I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name"

She wants to be different but everytime she meets up with someone new, she just can't get anything out even though she's thought about it when she's alone. Since she doesn't talk, no one really remembers her because she hasn't really done anything memorable.

"I miss the catch if they throw me the ball/ I'm the last chick standing up against the wall/.../"They call me 'Quiet Girl'/But I'm a riot"

I think this part is showing that it's always been that way since she was young (like being the last girl picked for the teams on the playground) but she's gotten to a stage where she's hot and all dressed up but she still can't say anything. And the worst part is (I'm a riot) that she's cool and funny but no one knows that because no one really know her.

I like to think that she's right at that place where she finally gets who she is and is about to be able to do all the things that she hasn't done because she's gotten to the point where she dresses up and goes out and she's taken steps to be more outgoing, but she just needs a little time. I think her frustration in the song is what is going to lead her to be more aggressive and find her voice.

Deep interpretation to such a kitschy song, huh?

For some reason I'm under the impression that this song is about a hooker? I'm not sure if that's an accurate interpretation but some of the lyrics make it seem that way.

Four letter word just to get me along (Four letter word =Love?)
It's a difficulty and I'm biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now (Maybe she doesn't like what she has to do?)

Holding back, everyday the same
Don't wanna be a loner (doesn't want to be alone)
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name (because they don't care about her, they just want to sleep with her)

They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name (all the names they call her and none of them are correct)

They call me quiet girl (again, they just refer to her as whatever they want, never her real name)
But I'm a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

I miss the catch if they through me the ball
I'm the last kid standing up against the wall (wall...street corner...? I don't know.)
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

Although I'm dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name...

Its probably not an accurate interpretation but it just seems like it could make sense.

another thing id like to add is that i think the four letter word is 'love'. Love to some people is a word to get them along. Like for example, a person says i love you but the only reason they say it is so they that person would like them. She says it to people so she won't be alone. Makes any sense?
