Lyrics for That's Not My Name as interpreted by bing_redboy

That's Not My Name Lyrics
Four letter word just to get me along
It’s a difficulty and I’m biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don’t wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

They call me quiet girl
But I’m a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

I miss the catch if they through me the ball
I’m the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, I’m not
Although I’m dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

They call me quiet girl
But i’m a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?

I think this is about a girl that might be forgettable because she's quiet for the most part... then finally tries to make a stand for herself by correcting those that forget her name. I'm not so crazy about this song...

I was hooked up from the first moment :D I love the beat so high school ish.

Also I thought she said Joleeza and I thought it was a cool name !

I think it's kind of people not taking you seriously or also the sleeping around theory fits, that was my first impression.

Farlda - I do not agree. It is easy to be forgotten though you are cheep. Like, you can sleep around with a lot of people, and never ever meet them again. I think she forgets their names too.

this song is completely devoid of meaning. She writes songs about being called another girl's name at school? Clearly she still has the mental age of a twelve year old. I fucking hate the Ting bloody Tings.

Ok seriously...

She's talking about men, especially in "dressed up, out and all" situations, and being unmemorable, vanilla, name always forgotten...but that doesn't mean she's claiming she's "sleeping around" and being a slut. einsteins. smh...

would the line "So alone all the time at night" make any sense in that context? lol...it's not that hard this song is pretty obvious. she's frustrated with men not falling all over her. that's hot chicks for ya.

but I lover her and I love the Ting Tings! refreshing, fun stuff

Brit's have a weird sense of humor...

Actually, I agree with everyone who said that this song is basically devoid of any deep meaning. In fact, Jules (the guy in the duo) sings his part:

"This song was in my head and now it's in my mind, call it reach it get some words and get some timing.
And though I realize, I cannot emphasize, I'll stick around but just don't promise, nothing binding.
Whatever can't you see, that you're so desperately, a standing joker like a vocal one-liner.
Instead I sing along, this song is monotone, I've gotta get some soul I gotta get some feeling."

This song is monotone... Hahaha... ^_^ I do love the beat though and the bass drums in the beginning is just so cool..

sianii is right. It isn't about men at all - they've done a few interviews in NME and said it's about being first of all mistaken for other people, and second of all anger at the record company. The 'darling'/'bird' bit doesn't just apply to getting chatted up, British blokes use it all the time for women whose names they don't know.

i love this song! it's so catchy and fun to dance to.
i think it's just about a girl who goes clubbing with her friends, although she's not too outgoing which results in her not getting picked up a lot. she's a cool kid but clubs just aren't her environment.

dag! i also did not think it was mary, jo, lisa... i thought it was some spanishy sort of name... like marijolisa. maybe it just has to do with how she sings it there. i prefer my fictional name anyhow.

I agree with rukmini, I think its about a girl who's not the clubbing type, but she "Don’t wanna be a loner" so she tries it, after a lot of "should I, shouldn't I". But because she's shy she's not too good at the small talk and chatting up ("It’s a difficulty and I’m biting on my tongue and I/I keep stalling, keeping me together")
So even though she introduces herself a lot, she's not memorable, like in TV shows where unpopular girls talk to people and they have to keep pausing and asking what their name is again, or using the wrong name for them.
"I miss the catch if they through me the ball/I’m the last kid standing up against the wall" could be about the fact that even when people do try to talk to her, she messes up and they lose interest, so nobody comes to talk to her.
"Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring/Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now" - because she's not used to clubbing, she might not wear heels a lot (I know I don't) so she wobbles and trip a lot, which makes her unappealing and boring to other people. She's gotten all dressed up and now she's regretting coming out because it's no fun.

I can't stop moving to this song every time I hear it! I used to think the lyrics were simple and that the song didn't really have a meaning, but after hearing the lead singer talking about it on the radio, I've changed my mind. She said it was a song about not being noticed, like being the last girl to get chosen to be on the team, or being the loner in the corner. Interesting.....

I havent read every post here, so forgive me if somebody has already come up with this idea. I think its about a girl who is doesnt stand out and is barely rememberable. She doesnt want to be a loner but is. She is is easily forgotten. It could be applied to school life, adult life, love life. Maybe it is a retrospective mixture of all three. I love this song. I can sort of relate to it :-( haha.

Well i do like the interpetation of the whole whore thing but i think that it is more about how kids can be cruel when the're younger. here is why i think so:

Holding back, everyday the same
Don’t wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

i think this has to do with childhood because when i was in elementary school i wanted to be with the cool kids so i just kept my mouth shut so they wouldn't think i was wierd. Even though she keeps herself togethr and doesn't say anything dumb, they still don't like her enough to remember her.
next...

I miss the catch if they through me the ball
I’m the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

I think this refers to when in elementary school you pick teams for ball, you line up and the kids all pick the teams. She says she is clumsy when playing these games, therefore the captians are the last to pick her. Next part of this paragraph is that all the "popular" girls wear heels to be cool so she trys to be like them and glam up with heels and accesories and ends up falling all over the place so the girls think shes boring. She ends up sitting on the fence by herself.

next...

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, I’m not
Although I’m dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

This may refer to how the other girls all have cool sleepover parties and they leave her out and she has to be alone at night.

i think this is a fair interpertation of the mid section please compare yours to mine.

*oh and great song by the way*

This song is about a girl in who's sped over the cliff of sanity with gusto. At the moment we encounter her in the song, she's went zonko after several years of lonely neglect, and is stalking the corridors of her school, going from class to class with an Armalite AR-10, bitterly pumping rounds into all those who would dare to call her 'darling', or 'bird'.

Call me Stay-cee? BAM!
Call me Quiet Girl? BAM!
I'm a RIOT! BAM!
Call me HELL! BAM!

The horror...

this song actually is about being invisible. unlike some people who comment songs, i only use this website to find out song MEANINGS; not if you like the song or not.

anyway, they performed this on Sunrise and they asked the band what the song was about and she said it was about being invisible and people, obviously, forgetting your name.

For anyone who is wondering what the guy says at the end, its:
his song was in my head, now it's in my mind, call it reach it get some words and get some timing.
And though I realize, I cannot emphasize, I'll stick around but just don't promise, nothing binding.
And baby can't you see, that you're so desperately, a standing joker like a vocal one-liner.
Instead of sing-a-long, this song is monotone, I've gotta get some soul I gotta get some feeling.

This song is about when she (Katie) and Jules visited the record company I think, and Katie got ignored for the most part cause she was younger than Jules and was a female.

Or at least, thats what I heard from my friend, and hes a pretty reliable source.

Freaking love this song though. (=

her name is Katie
but when she worked in nettos her name badge said Kate

Uh-Oh

This led to her killing a customer due to frustration

However, because her name badge was wrong the police could never trace her and so she left nettos and formed a band with that guy who wears sunglasses indoors: cunt.

I was at the G Rock Sessions on Halloween (so, two days ago) and they performed 4 songs acoustic.
I don't care what anyone says about her at this point, because I was certainly skeptical about how their music would translate acoustically...

They rocked it. She does have quite a wonderful voice. I'd beg to say she almost sounds better live... most of my favorite bands do. But don't hate on her voice because it's actually quite lovely.

Even though the song is pretty easy to understand, this is how I interpret it:

Four letter word just to get me along
It’s a difficulty and I’m biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

I take it as some guy is trying to hit on her in a club or a bar, and she's biting on her tounge and stalling because she doesn't know what to say. And she needs one of her friends or someone around her to start a conversation or start talking so she doesn't seem stupid since she doesn't know what to say.

Holding back, everyday the same
Don’t wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

This one is pretty self-explanatory. This happens to her alot (guys hitting on her or trying to talk to her and her not knowing what to say back) and she doesn't want to be a loner since she never says anything at all. And since she doesn't really give them anything conversation wise they have nothing to rememeber her by.

They call me hell
They call me Stacey
They call me her
They call me Jane
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

It's obvious they call her different names becasue they can't remember her since she's so quiet.

They call me quiet girl
But I’m a riot
Mary, Jo, Lisa
Always the same
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

They call her quiet girl becasue she is shy around them, but she is actually crazy and a riot around her friends and other people she knows.

I miss the catch if they throw me the ball
I’m the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

If they're trying to flirt with her or suggest that they like her a.k.a throw her the ball, she doesn't catch on. Because of all of this she is the last one standing up against the wall at the club while her friends are dancing with guys. Dressing up isn't really her thing so "these heels keep her boring" because she can't really dance let alone walk in them. She got all dressed up for nothing and is just standing by herself.

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, I’m not
Although I’m dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
ame .. ame .. ame

She's usually alone at night in her house, so she wanted to do something new for a change and go out. She got all dressed up and looks good, but they still forget her name.
