Look at us break our bonds in this kitchen
Look at us rallying all our defenses
Look at us waging war in our bedroom
Look at us jumping ship in our dialogues

[Chorus]
There is no difference in what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as bigger symptoms out there
So why spend all our time in dressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause right here, our underneath

Look at us form our cliques in our sandbox
Look at us micro kids with both our hearts blocked
Look at us turn away from all the rough spots
Look at dictatorship on my own block

[Chorus]

How I've spun my wheels with carts before my horse
When shine on the outside springs from the root
Spotlight on these seeds of simpler reasons
This core, born into form, starts in our living room

[Chorus]

General Comment:first off i love this woman!!!!! she has changed my life!!!! so i think this song is about how all these things we do.... inside our homes... inside ourselves, everything.. manifests itself as bigger problems in the world. so we all want to change the world but we really need to change ourselves and our homes. "There is no difference in what we're doing in here" inside our home/ourselves "That doesn't show up as big as it does out there" self explanitory. "So why spend all our time undressing our bandages" why try to heal when we keep doing the same thing. and also in larger terms, try to fix the world. "when we've the ultimate key to the cause right here right underneath" when the way to fix it all is right here. in ourselves/our homes. fix the root fix the rest. thats what i think anyways.

General Comment:Fix ourselves...and with that, we'll fix bigger things. It's as simple as that...and what you've all posted I agree with more or less. She's so fantastic. Alanis never lets me down

General Comment:after watching her music video for this song, my idea about what the lyric "we've the ultimate key to the cause right here right underneath" changed. Throughout the video it constantly shows how everytime she tries to get someone to take one of her "save the earth" flyers, everyone kind of blows her off like saving the earth is a big bother... and then at the end she takes down all of her save the earth stuff and kind of changes her approach to "Save the Heart", which i think is brilliant... So, what guess i'm trying to say is that i feel as if the lyric kind of sends a message that we must save our hearts before we can save the earth.... our hearts being the ultimate cause of why we now have to worry about saving the earth... if we would just kind of heal our hearts in a way where we would care about everything a little more, then saving the world would become a lot less of a bother...

General Comment:FYI, I love this song, best off the new album, a couple corrections that make more sense to the general consensus of the meaning of this song:

    The Chorus it goes:
That doesn't show up as bigger symptoms out there

and the last verse last line is:
This core, born into form, starts in our living room
