Lyrics for Geraldine as interpreted by ..Becci..

Geraldine Lyrics
when your sparkle evades your soul
i`ll be at your side to console
when your standing on the window ledge
i`ll talk you back from the edge
i will turn your tide
be your shepard and your guide
when your lost in the deep and darkest place around
may my words walk you home safe and sound
when you say that im no good and you feel like walking
i need to make sure you know thats just the prescription talking
when your feet decide to walk you on the wayward side
up upon the stairs and down the downward slide
i will turn your tide
do all that i can to heal you inside
i`ll be the angel on your shoulder
my name is geraldine, im your social worker

i see you need me
i know you do

This person is clearly somebody who will, or already has, saved their life.

What an incredible song.

To me this song is about obviously a social worker who goes so far out of their way for a person they don't even know.

Amazing song

This song is obviously sarcastic, right? Am I the only one that gets that?

Hmmm... sarcastic? I don't think it is sarcastic. Knowing Glasvegas, they are generally achingly heartfelt. But I do think it is supposed to be... I guess the word is ironic. When we get to the last line and realize that the only person this kid has as a lifeline to survival is their social worker, it is sad.

I know what you mean but I don't think sarcastic is the correct word. I think their are a few ways to interprit this song. The "sarcastic" way in which the social worker isover-emphasizing what she can do but realy won't do anything. Or the way that this boys only family/friend is his social worker, realy it should be his mum or dad saying these words to him but at the end it is revelead to be his social worker. Or mayby it's completly different, what do I know?

I was at their gig in the roundhouse, camden and the actual geraldine was selling official t-shirts.

she said the song is simply about her and being a social worker as shes friends with the band

LOVE THEM

The social worker and their client has been used as a simile.
In an Interveiw James said that that the song geraldine is about how how romance isnt dead in the world and that there are still good people in the world, so there is always somebody thier for you when you need them.
The realationship could be between anybody; boyfriend & girlfreind; two freinds; father & son etc...

I think this song is a little sad but also contains some tongue-in-cheek humor. Just for buoilding up to that social worker line because its so unexpected. Anyway huge highlight of the album one of their best songs

This song brings a lump to my throat EVERY time i listen to it. When you hear "I see you need me, i know you do" it's possibly the best sounding chorus/crescendo ever made. Absolutly brilliant. Makes you proud to be Scottish also.

Yeah, that's what I got, too. Geraldine had a really good gov't job doing social work. She gave it up to follow the band. She now sells merch for them. Follow your bliss, ya know?

Whether or not the real Geraldine was a social worker is definitely interesting, but keep in mind that it's written in as a metaphor. It's basically a song about someone being someone else's guardian angel (figuratively speaking), except he decided to use "social worker" instead (because Geraldine apparently was one), which adds an element of sadness to this [freakin amazing] song.

even before i knew what geraldine was about, this song just makes me want to cry, it's so beautiful.

heh, his accent's so thick, i just realized he said, "my name is GERALDINE,".
the meaning's amazing, by the way.
it's clearly about one person saving the other; about them trying to make their life better.

The songwriter wrote a heartfelt song from the point of view of Geraldine. The listeners can then apply the song's words to their own lives by substituting their loved ones for Geraldine. In this way, listening to the song is almost like getting a touching message of love and support from your loved one. That's what I get from it anyway. Your mileage may vary.

I think it is about special relationships ( married couples, best friends, father and sons etc.) in general. the line of being "your social-worker" does not have a literal meaning but actually is the about being the person that keeps the check and balances with the other person in the relationship. the person that keeps the other person "socially straight".

what do you all think?

I think it's meant to subvert the standard 'lovers promise' style of song. don't think it's sarcastic, I just think it's meant to mislead you into believing this is some beautiful set of promises and intents on commitment then at the end it pulls the romance from under your feet and the whole thing becomes much sadder as the suicide references and things were literal, not metaphorical and the singer isn't really doing this out of love, it's just her job.
