Lyrics for Cape Canaveral as interpreted by Scifi Saint

Cape Canaveral Lyrics
Oh, oh, oh brother totem pole
I saw your legends lined up
And I never felt more natural
Apart, I just came apart

Please, please, please sister Socrates
You always answer with a question
Show some kindness to a petty thief
Forgive, you did forgive

Saw the migrants smoke in the old orange grove
And the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a father to me
In 1960’s speak
In the comatose joy that we’re on TV
While the mountain’s side was shining
Wild colors of my destiny

I watched your face age backwards
Changing shape in my memory
You told me victory’s sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

Hey, hey, hey mother interstate
Can you deliver me from evil
Make me honest make me wedding cake
Atone, I will atone

Wait, wait, wait mighty outer-space
All that flying saucer terror
Made me lazy drinking lemonade
A waste, it just went to waste

Like the Freon cold out the hotel door
Or the white rocket fade over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a daughter to me
Your buried shoe-box grief
I felt your poltergeist love like savannah heat
While the waterfall was pouring
Crazy symbols of my destiny

I watched your face die backwards
Little baby in my memory
A lonely victory sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

And you don’t judge me
That’s not your style
But I won’t see you for a little while
And there’s no worries
Whose got time
All these changes are going to fill your mind

Like the citrus glow off the old orange grove
Or the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
It’s been a nightmare to me
Some 1980’s grief
Gives me parachute dreams
Like old war movies
While the universe was drawn
Perfect circles form infinity

Saw the stars get smaller
Tiny diamonds in my memory
I know that victory is sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

There's a couple words/lines I'm not sure about.

i.e.
In 1960's speak(?)
&
Some 1980's grief or maybe greed(?)

=\

wow, i love this song. i got a recording of the mystic valley band(i guess thats what they're going by? They were unnamed when they played the show.)'s second show. at first i kind of shrugged it off, but then i accidentally listened to the whole concert, and i haven't been able to stop. I'm REALLY impressed by 99% of all this new stuff. Really, I am. It's just phenomenal how he writes all this! He should short stories, I bet they'd own.

I don't understand why there is a tilde in Canaveral, since it is clearly not pronounced that way.

The reason I put that in there was of a setlist I saw where it was spelt like that.

Alright... One line that's definitely wrong in the lyrics above is:

"In the comatose joy that we're on TV"

The correct lyric is:

"Give me comatose joy like rerun TV"

That makes much, much more sense... Like, there's no need to pay attention 'cause you've seen it all before... And you take comfort in that.

Also, it's "1980's greed" and "while the universe was drawing perfect circles for infinity."

Dig it.

Saw the migrants smoke in the old orange grove
And the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a father to me
In 1960’s speak
In the comatose joy that we’re on TV

Is actually:

And watch the migrants smoke in the old orange grove
And the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a father to me
In 1960’s speak
Give me comatose joy that we’re on TV

You told me victory’s sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

is actually:

You taught me victory’s sweet
Even deep in the cheap seats

Later in the song:

A lonely victory sweet
is actually:
You told me victory’s sweet

All these changes are going to fill your mind
is actually:
All these changes gunna fill your mind

It’s been a nightmare to me
is actually:
It’s been a nightmare for me

Saw the stars get smaller
is actually:
I watched the stars get smaller

Great song!!

This is my favorite song off of his new album, forsure.

And on the recording, it IS 1980's greed, but live he said 1960's speak.

This song means so much to me, simply because he mentions the Cape. Both sides of my family work for NASA, and my parents met in Merritt Island/Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral because of the space program. I recently worked at Kennedy Space Center under the lead physicist at the applied physics lab on site and help to fix a problem with the windows of the orbiter (the plane of the Shuttle). Anything NASA-related is fantastic.
And, of course, Conor is brilliant.

Currently my fav. track off the album, along with another one or two.
I'm not too clear on the meaning... I need to read up a bit on some of the references.

this song makes me nostalgic and miss my family. i especially love the line "i felt your poltergeist love like savannah heat." that part of the song gives me chills!

this latest album really seems like conor is getting comfortable with his spirituality. it's full of phrases like "mother interstate" and "while the universe was drawing perfect circles for infinity." good for him.

i hate to be one of those fans who tries to pinpoint exactly who the song is about based on other songs, but does anyone else think that this song from the line "like the freon cold out the hotel door" to "all these changes are going to fill your mind" is about sabrina duim? it would make sense since the song as a whole is dealing with spirituality, and talking about the death of an friend would go hand-in-hand with that. the line "you don't judge me" sounds like sabrina's personality from what we know of her in "breezy", and "i won't see you for a little while" is a very conor oberst-way of talking about a friend who has passed. it seems like that entire section of the song is riddled with what could be references to sabrina.

Does anyone know if this song is about Cape Caneveral, Florida?

Saw the migrants smoke in the old orange grove
And the red rocket blaze over Cape Canaveral
You’ve been a father to me
In 1960’s speak

It definitely sounds like it..

My favourite song of a great album, but I have no idea what it means, if it even does have a definitive meaning? With Cape Canaveral being the focal point, it is like he is pondering the whole universe out there, and then the world around him and his own life. I love lines like, "While the mountainside was shining wild colors of my destiny." It is very poetic, and even if it doesn't have a sophisticated meaning deep down, it still beautiful and compelling.

Do you guys think he means "Savannah heat" like the city of Savannah, GA? It gets pretty hot here. Or does he mean "savanna" like a grassland? Anyone have any insight here?
