Man, you got a lot of jokes to tell
So you throw your baby's pennies down the well
Give a little more than you like
Pick apart the past, you're not going back
Don't you waste your time
No, oh, oh, oh
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a-a
Sure, you've got a handle on the past
It's why you keep your little lovers in your lap
Give a little more than you like
Pick apart the past, you're not going back
So don't you waste your time
No, oh, oh, oh
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a-a
Hoping for the last ship to arrive
I am blessed with a kingdom, half mine.
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a
So you throw your baby's pennies down the well
Give a little more than you like
Pick apart the past, you're not going back
Don't you waste your time
No, oh, oh, oh
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a-a
Sure, you've got a handle on the past
It's why you keep your little lovers in your lap
Give a little more than you like
Pick apart the past, you're not going back
So don't you waste your time
No, oh, oh, oh
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a-a
Hoping for the last ship to arrive
I am blessed with a kingdom, half mine.
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a-a-a
Gila-a-a

a girl who has a complicated relationship
"Give a little more than you like
Pick apart the past, you're not going back
Don't you waste your time"
(she puts more in her relationship than insignificant other/thinks back about how things are her fault or how things the way they are/ dont waste your time)
"Man, you got a lot of jokes to tell
So you throw your baby's pennies down the well"
(maybe he acts a certain way with her and acts another way when theres people around making her not feel important/ the insignificant other doesnt listen to her and care for the things she likes or aspires to ["baby" refering to herself, pennies down the well do what? relieve wishes hence "so you throw your babys wishes away"])
"Sure, you've got a handle on the past
It's why you keep your little lovers in your lap"
(sure, you thought everything through and analyzed all/ little lovers could refer to say photos or maybe belonglings of her lover)
"Hoping for the last ship to arrive
I've been blessed with a kingdom, half-mine"
(she's waiting/hoping for him to come around and realise what hes doing to her/ she still loves him)
take that bembridge scholars! (via mummy)
I don't think she necessarily want to have a family with him but at least live their love together as much as possible. Since it's already an old love between them, according to the lyrics, she clearly hopes that he comes to her again and this time doesn't leave ever.
"I am blessed with a kingdom, half-mine" I think that means him and all the thoughts/things they share/shared each other in their lives, so her decision is taken but not his apparently. He must be afraid of the future and what he wouldn't like to happen. Both of them have a point and have a real love for each other I guess (the hardest one).
It sounds a little dumb in a way, but it's true that many things could separate if there's a lack of trust or devotion in one or the other. That's how love can be hard, when it doesn't go well it could end as a poison, but we are masters of our acts or at least responsible. Anyways you can't really live without love or dreams for sure.. unless you go dead in your heart, but you don't become smarter or better this way, then you could end up missing important things.
About "Gila" it can mean too many things to be sure x).
As I saw most of the lyrics of the band touches the subject of vital things of life, mostly love that brings basically good and strong moments, also between sadness and hapiness sometimes... That's what makes me like it, they deserve an ok reward for their work.
devotion?
"Hoping for the lashing to arrive, I've been blessed with a kingdom half mine."
I sort of think of divorce and the awarding of alimony as both "lashing" and "kingdom half mine" ;)
