"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
It?s hard to wake up
When you're not sleeping
It?s hard to make it mean something
When it means nothing at all
Hear a call he made
I slept for a year until
I pulled your hair
I fell down the stairs
So glad I found you there
Time to forget
Your mistakes and regrets
Sometimes I swore
You're in my house
Was a trap too
And I had black nights
When my hope had died
You, you're a friendly knife
So I let the werewolf out
I let the [Incomprehensible] have their way
I've looked down on you
From my mountain, I slept by your feet
And when you come out
With your strong winter moon to drown in sound
And I?ll sleep nor lie
When your happy tide twist ashore on the frozen ground
It?s your hollow now so many would dream about
Some nights I swear
There was magic in the air
When you're not sleeping
It?s hard to make it mean something
When it means nothing at all
Hear a call he made
I slept for a year until
I pulled your hair
I fell down the stairs
So glad I found you there
Time to forget
Your mistakes and regrets
Sometimes I swore
You're in my house
Was a trap too
And I had black nights
When my hope had died
You, you're a friendly knife
So I let the werewolf out
I let the [Incomprehensible] have their way
I've looked down on you
From my mountain, I slept by your feet
And when you come out
With your strong winter moon to drown in sound
And I?ll sleep nor lie
When your happy tide twist ashore on the frozen ground
It?s your hollow now so many would dream about
Some nights I swear
There was magic in the air

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
thanks so much for the lyrics, but I have a few corrections. I'm still not sure about two spots, but everything else I can hear very clearly. this is what I hear:
It's hard to wake up when you're not sleeping It's hard to make it mean something when it means nothing at all
Hear her call, in vain
I slept for a year Until I pulled your hair I fell down the stairs So glad, I found you there
Time to forget your mistakes and regrets Sometimes I swore your mouth was a trap door
And on long black nights When my hope had died You were a friendly knife
So I let the werewolf out I let the ?lonely nights? Have their way
I looked down on you From my mountain I slept by your feet
And when you come out You're somewhere downtown Drowned in sound
And no sleep, no light No appetite, ?twister sore? On the frozen ground
It's all over now So many thoughts To dream about
Some nights I swear there was magic in the air
absolutely in love with seabear
much appreciated. I took in consideration your suggestions and made some improvements to the transcript above. hope you don’t mind. :)
Lovely, I love waltzes.
'Some nights I swear there was magic in the air' - he uses that exact same line in Cat Piano. Am I the only one who's noticed?
A few corrections, sorry...
So I let the werewolf out I let the hungry mouths (have their way)
.... .... ....
And when you come home your song will turn into a drowning sound
No sleep, no light No appetite, twist the ___ On the frozen ground
That's it. this song is about trying to get closer to a loved one, who makes it more and more difficult to get close to them. I personally believe the singer is singing to a girlfriend, but that is kind of a biased view...
It could really be anyone
^hey thanks for the corrections.
in fact, i noticed that sentence on 'cat piano' too. and the use of the 'owl' is present on other lyrics too. i guess that the lyrics' writer wanted to refer to someone or some event that is very close to him, and i find it so beautiful.
does anyone know why this band always talks about owl girl and wolves? does anyone know who owl girl is??
