And there were future reflections
On the face and the hands
On a green colored island
On a primitive man
It was the future reflected
It felt familiar but new
A street was missing a building
The kids had something to do

There was a feeling the spirit was leaving
Red like a marker
So my tribe, with my knife
Cut the heart from a lonely life

I saw patterns on floorboards
Deep in the dust was a leader
Someone was walking on floorboards
Turned them from oak to cedar
He can assess the situation
I wrapped a string around my finger
Into the forest with the young ones
I don't expect to be a winner

But as long as you feel it
I'm a believer
My heart is phosphor
Sea rolls and death tolls
Break the surface don't break my bones

Off of the trail and off of your hands and
Onto a new plan
Is the cost to stay lost
Forever in an empty skin
Pale and thin

If it's good, or if it's fortune, I can't tell
But pieces come together for some reason just as well
Their guns couldn't see us
There's a sea outside my door
And one day I'll appreciate
The rush of blood and the washed out beat of the shore

And remember what it felt like
To be alone
Sitting in the sunlight
All alone

Song Comparison:i get shivers when the song builds up to the bridge where the question of "If it's good, or if it's fortune, I can't tell
But pieces come together for some reason just as well" refer back to "pieces of what'which is so sad and depicts a decimated land. "Future Reflections' wants to give us HOPE or at the very least nostalgia. Moving forward, the guns/spotlights that are sensed in "PIECES' being overhead and all around in have lost are impotent here--and yes, i realize this song could be a dream, a wish, a courageous attempt at faith that things will revert, or evolve or devolve....I'm often of a quasi-luddite frame of mind and think often of my many readings of "Dune" where computers have been wiped off the face of the jaded, drug cartelled galaxy....mgmt seem to envision or, if they are only clever dudes who know how to speak to the zeitgeist, then they at least give those of us who care about Gaia the chance to raise our voices in songs that possess melodies and momentum that provide that 'release' that rock and roll was born to facilitate. i don't give a whit for how 'clever' or 'manipulative' or 'contrived' MGMT may be. i care about what they catalyze in ME. and i really get lost in this song.

    Their guns couldn't see us
There's a sea outside my door
    And one day I'll appreciate
The rush of blood and the washed out beat of the shore

General Comment:I think it's a reflexion of the future , we have a lot of cars , houses , contamination that someday all that will be forbidden or everyone's gonna get crazy and break their stuff and we will be back like primitive man ..

General Comment:i'm pretty sure it's more literal than most of you think. there's an interview they did with a radio station where they talk about how crazy it all is that they've become as famous as they are and how they were never really sure if they wanted to be in this situation where they tour constantly and are part of the other side of music, the label side. and they mentioned how they'd rather just be chilling out on a beach somewhere. so it's probably an elaborate description of how they yearn to be at peace again and be able to relax. if not the entirety of the song, maybe that could at least explain the last couple of stanzas.

General Comment:This is one of the most mind bendingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. I'm a musician and to be honest...I haven't been truly impressed with a band in a long time. Actually...forget impressed...MGMT absolutely blows me away. I have absolutely no reservations in saying that they are true musical geniuses. The fact that they wrote this album at such a young age (early 20s) is even more baffling.

The very end of Future Reflections is the high point of the album for me. It's so genuine and real and truly accomplishes what music was meant to accomplish. It makes you feel. MGMT is a testament to how incredibly and immeasurably powerful music can be. It transcends all other forms of communication.

General Comment:I feel like at least part of this song is about becoming famous and being unsure about what it will bring.

"Off of the trail and off of your hands and
    Onto a new plan
Is the cost to stay lost
    Forever in an empty skin
    Pale and thin"

This part seems to me like anxiety about changing their plan and feeling like people only see their famous side and not who they really are, like an "empty skin"

"There's a sea outside my door
    And one day I'll appreciate
The rush of blood and the washed out beat of the shore

And remember what it felt like
    To be alone
    Sitting in the sunlight
    All alone"

And this part seems like looking into the future when they'll be able to just appreciate relaxing on the beach in the sun, away from all the craziness of life as a celebrity. Like the future reflecting back to them so they can see what's going to happen.

General Comment:I think this song is just about the progress of te human species, from primitive tribes living on nature to giant civilizations, but the question is whether all the "progress" was actually beneficial.

Song Meaning:I see this as a song about getting over social anxiety, which Andrew has stated he has.

Nevertheless, beautiful song, definitely my favourite off their amazing album. Also, to add to the topic of psychedelics, this album is mind blowing to listen to on LSD. This very song was playing and I felt the most intense surge of emotions ever, not negative yet not positive, as the mood of the song follows.

General Comment:I believe MGMT was painting a picture of an inevitable apocalyptic world. Then again, I may be over-analytical.

    'Sea rolls and death tolls
Break the surface don't break my bones'
    -A great flood will come.

'There's a sea outside my door
    And one day I'll appreciate
The rush of blood and the washed out beat of the shore'
-They are thankful for Life and the Land, for it may all be washed away one day.

'And remember what it felt like
    To be alone
    Sitting in the sunlight
    All alone'
-Only distant memories of self-reflection and the Sun exist.

General Comment:This song hurts me a lot. But I think it's what more of us should expect of in life.

When they say "There was a feeling the spirit was leaving. Red like a marker. So my tribe, with my knife
Cut the heart from a lonely life." I think of god being invisable to those who take him out of their lives and someday when they rediscover their hearts, they'll rid theirselves of the opaqueness lying in front of the spirit.
