It is a great song, and a great tribute. I have, however, seen a different versian of the lyrics. The words are the same, but notice the capitalization choices.

Noticing that, and some of the word choices that 3 Doors Down has chosen (your city lights, as opposed to our city lights); I think this song was written from God's point of view. I think it should be obvious enough if you just read it through with that idea

It's a good song, but I can't help but feel like I'm watching a bunch of recruitment propaganda. The national guard logo in the corner is a bit much.

I just seen them live yesterday. They were in Panama City doing a free concert put on by the national guard. This is one of songs the peformed, and their great live.

I hope this song is pro troops rather than pro war. we should definitely support the troops cause they didn't ask for this war and they're just doing their job... but no one should ever support this current war. It's just Vietnam all over again. But other than this one song that I may or may not have a problem with the album is great. :)

i LOVE this song because being a soldier you come across alot of negative views on what it is we do. There is much more to our job than killing and destruction, the good we do rarely gets shown. I love the angle they come from in this song. I'm active duty army, not national guard, but we are all over doing the same thing. We not only defend our country, but we also help those in need worldwide, which makes the sacrafices we make well worth it

They've said in their concert once, "Of course we're not pro-war. Nobody likes war-- everyone knows what war brings. But, we do support the men and women in our military..." Then the crowd goes wild, screaming "USA! USA!"

I think they've finally taken that and put it into a song.

I dunno - when a song is funded by the national guard it seems a bit like a scheme to get teens to recruit with the army.

Also, my history teacher played this song to the class to teach us about propaganda. My history teacher is awesome.

Personmanthingguy, your history teacher is an idiot. Sorry to have to break that to you, but somebody needs to tell you. The U.S. military as a whole is one of the greatest institutions and proudest traditions this country has ever produced, and it's not propaganda to try and get that message out in an environment where all branches of the military are routinely reviled and criticized - especially in the public school system, which is truly the most insidious propaganda machine we've ever encountered.

The soldiers of the past, present and future are and will always be the greatest among us, and it's only right that tribute be paid to them whenever possible. That's what makes this song so great (it also helps that it just flat-out rocks). And just for the record, you can't support the troops if you don't support their mission! You people need to grow up and realize that every day you whine about this war being "wrong" or "illegal" or "unjust" is just one more day the enemy has the will and morale to fight and kill our men and women in uniform! You want the war to end? Then it's time to suck it up, realize that a vast majority of Congress authorized the action, put on a unified front, and actually give our troops the support they need to finish this thing and come home!

Omally, I have no problem with presenting a united front to hostile groups. My problem is with having to be 'united' beyond that front (i.e. suppression of dissent). I definitely appreciate what the troops are doing for us but it doesn't make sense to sell our democracy's soul (the freedoms of speech, press, etc. that make dissent possible) just to preserve its structures. To me, that just drips with the plot of Star Wars. Thoughts?

War in itself is war. It is created by immoral people and greedy dictators. We enter the war with our troops not to simply kill, but to protect, because by killing the evil we save the innocent. And its not all about killing either, troops do much more. Its not propaganda, it's just giving the armed forces the respect and honor they deserve.

d5xtgr, just happened to check back in and saw your post, and in fact I do have some thoughts! I can respect your argument - obviously one of the things that make this country the greatest nation in history (and yes, I absolutely believe that) is the guarantee of certain freedoms enumerated in our Constitution, such as the freedom of speech addressed in the 1st amendment. But you have to note that the while that amendment provides that Congress shall make no law prohibiting free speech or assembly, it says nothing about exercising that freedom irresponsibly. I would never want to suppress dissent or difference of opinion, but in this case the proper time to express that dissent was during the buildup to war. There was a healthy debate back then, and all those opposed to the war had ample time to make that known and try to sway the opinion of their representative. But the minute Congress authorized the war, we had a responsibility to our country and to our troops to set aside our differences and rally behind them - it's just that simple. A war can't be won if the enemy sees a divided nation and realizes all he has to do is hang on long enough for his adversary to give up and go home in defeat (hello, Vietnam). This isn't like trying to change a law or policy you don't agree with. We're talking about the lives of thousands of American men and women. Once the decision to go to war is made by our government, we OWE it them to show our enemy one single face - that of victory over them, and nothing less. That's your best chance at winning the war and saving American lives.

And JustinG08, I don't know where you're posted right now or whether you'll see this, but I want to thank you for serving this great nation. You're one of the real heroes - keep your head down and your powder dry, brother, and stay safe.

Wow...Well said! I agree with this 100%.
My dad is in Iraq right now, he's been there for a 365, (Just one more week and he'll be back home!), and it just really miffs me off when all of these people are out there, complaining all the time about how the war is stupid, and we should just give up and get it over with, when the troops overseas, away from their families and safe beds and homes are dying every day, Fighting so that these people can have the /right/ to go to the White House lawn and tie themselves to the gates, holding signs, and then going home to a hot shower and laying down in their warm beds and sleeping for a full 12 hours because they /can/ thanks to our Military.

My dad's just a com-guy, not on the front lines or anything, but we're all proud of him, and know that every part played overseas is important if we're going to win this thing, and keep all of us safe at home!

I'm in the millitary, and while this is a good song, it's about the national gaurd, who are only called up occasionally. A good song wouldn't just apply to one branch. and it's an ad at the theatre here which shoots all credibility in the foot. but that is just my opinion.

i know it's supposed to be about the army but i feel that it doesn't sound that way to me. doesn't seem to fit with all the criteria. i think God is a good perspective, but i've also got this idea about a band of defenders, not technically the army, hiding away...i don't think it's really much about the Us army.
