If I could look across the country From California to New Jersey Then I would count the parks and lake resorts And number all the jets and airports All those rather dreary rain clouds still bother me 'cause I look through the camera eyepiece and cannot see If I could open up my window And see from Tampa Bay to Juneau Then I would survey all those open miles And line them up in single file Everywhere I look I see green scenic sublime And all those oceanic vistas are so divine If I was standing on the balcony And you were walking down below I'd feel rather depressed and out of place And lonely just to watch you go If you were swinging from the highway overpass Within the western hemisphere I'd feel rather afraid and insincere If you began to disappear If I was walking through a sad art gallery And you were driving through the night I'd feel rather alone and ill at ease Beneath the brilliant showroom light If I was flying on a plane above your town And you were gazing at the sky Somehow I'd feel intact and reassured If you began to wave goodbye

General Comment:I believe the first part was about his way of thinking because he has Aspergers and, like me he likes to organize and count, etc. And then the latter part was about his imagination running wild. I can closely relate to this song.

General Comment:I think this song is about a girl he had a relationship with.
but he needs to let go of her, although he loves her, because she inflicted him to much pain.

i think you can see it best at the last verse:

If I was walking through a sad art gallery
And you were driving through the night
I'd feel rather alone and ill at ease
    Beneath the brilliant showroom light

he doesn't know her feelings, and he has let her go and feels rather 'alone and ill at ease' instead of being with her and taking the risk, that she could let him down

If I was flying on a plane above your town
And you were gazing at the sky
Somehow I'd feel intact and reassured
If you began to wave goodbye

i think it could have been, that he met her after they split up and she ignored him or was with going with another guy or something like that. he feels 'intact and reassured' because he knows he has done the right thing of letting her go.

does that make sense to anyone? :)

Song Meaning:To me this song is about him barely knowing a person, but feel really connected to this person and don't want to lose the person, because he has already felled in love. The first to verses kind of tells that he doesn't know this person fully and want to get to know this person better, kind of putting her/him "in single file", though this person don't open up for him (all this rather dreary rainclouds still bothers me, cause I look through the camera eyepiece and cannot see). The other verses are telling that he don't want to lose this person, and that he feels lost without her/him.

    Just my interpretation of course.

General Comment:It's simply that he wants his former lover or ex or what have you
not to just disappear from his life without some kind of goodbye
    or acknowledgement of him.

If I was standing on the balcony
And you were walking down below
I'd feel rather depressed and out of place
And lonely just to watch you go
^The guy sees the girl walk away, but the girl doesn't even see him.

Which is why he feels assured when he was flying on a plane
and she was looking at the sky, cause some how, they connected
    one last time.

If I was flying on a plane above your town
And you were gazing at the sky
Somehow I'd feel intact and reassured
If you began to wave goodbye

My Interpretation:This is by far my favorite Owl City song. This and Saltwater Room were the very first songs I ever downloaded by them.

I really connected with it in my own way, but I do strongly agree with Brighterrr.
I've always thought of it as a person very much in love with a person that they can't have, and, not in a stalker-ish sense, but more in a loving protective manner, wanting to always know what they are doing, where they are, wanting to know what they're thinking and if they're thinking of you in the slightest.

"Somehow I'd feel intact and reassured if you began to wave goodbye."
Oh my god it gets me every time.

General Comment:Eh. A lot of Owl City songs sound the same to me, but I like this one. Reminds me of the end of Up in the Air somewhat. About moving on, I suppose.

General Comment:this reminds me of my recent break up. I'm a bit of an amateur photographer, and the eyepeice reminds me of how i used my hobby to deal with things. i would just go out and shoot pics. it also reminds me of how i wanted everything to simple, and organized, "lined up in single file" the song also talks about situations where the narrator is separated from the subject of the song (the hotel balcony, disappearing on the overpass, sad art gallery.) the balcony part spoke to me the most. We had been such important parts of eachoter's lives. the next time i saw her...it felt really weird not to run up and kiss her. like i felt lonely and out of place to see her near me, but feel so far away.

General Comment:To me this songs talks about moving on, although a part of you doesnt want to let go of the things you have, you know that you need to. Also wanting to move on on good terms, caring for someone deeply but it just isnt going to work because your both wanting to take different paths in life. The song is just beautiful it gets me thinking and helps me realize what is right. I <3 Owl City
